A bit of English, a bit of French, a bit of Wolof, a big chunk of talent... all together mixed with nice instrumentation and you get a hit that lasted 16 consecutive weeks (4 months) at rank #1 of French charts (longest time for a single ever).

This song stayed in the top chart for many weeks in France. More than a year I think... And yes, it was what we called a "Slow" (ballad to have some "couple dance time" in discos, that was the song for dating :) ).
I still have chills each time I listen to this song.

Hi, Dereck! I'm a 90's kid and that is definitely a song from my childhood, although I should have been 4 or 5 years old at that time and it's not in my mother language (bulgarian), but I remember watching it on MTV Europe a lot and it sure got that feeling even without knowing a thing what it's about at that time. I don't know why the song by russian singer Zivert - Life reminds of that 90's feeling and sound.

I don't know why, but I really like songs that mix languages. If it's made right like in this one that mixes three languages it's amazing. Usually you mostly hear these kind of songs in Eurovsion. Czechia had 4 languages this year and I loved it.
When a child is born it is said it takes seven seconds to imprint itself with its biological mother as regards tone of skin it puts it out there why there is no racism amongst children they learn or experience it. Timeless song and a lesson to be taken from it.

This is a trilingual song. Yes English, but also the West African language called Wolof and also some in French! So a very rich cultural song. The 7 seconds refer to the first moments of a child's life.

You should dive into Neneh Cherry's back catalogue. Buffalo Stance and Manchild are a great starting point. She also did a cover/rework of I've got you under my skin, the Cole Porter song for the Red Hot AIDS charity. Her daughter is the pop star Mabel I don't know if she is well known in the States.

Ahh, the 90's. And Swedish masterminds behind it, as usual.
At almost the same period, there was this musical collaboration between Malcolm McLaren & 2 of the biggest stars in France - Catherine Deneuve & Francoise Hardy. On this album, there was a duet by him & this French chanteuse of vietnamese background- Atlantique Khanh called "Paris Lutece Paname", you should check it out. It is a cross between 7 seconds & Enigma/Sandra/Mylene

This song is so subtle and nice than it doesn’t need any key changes and I think this was part of its huge success in Europe . I had been a big fun from both , Yossou , , since the song “ Toxiques” from late 80’s but totally relevant right now because of climate change , Bes the biggest African artist singer ever from my beloved Senegal where I have lived many years
, and Neneh since I discovered her back in the 90’s with “ Buffalo Stance “ and “ Manchild”
I always here in the chorus: "It's not a sick game, but 7 seconds are waiting, just as long as I stay, I'll be waiting".
The other one really good from him is Undecided (radio version), with one of native language of Cameroon.
That native language is wolof, it’s from Senegal.

If not sure if Mabel is well known outside of the UK? Its funny to think she made her first appearance in a music video when she was just a baby. When Neneh held her in the Manchild clip.

Have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed by your reaction. While I appreciate the production notes you offered, this is not a "catchy" song. It's a very somber call to humanity about racism, and not something we should groove to. Music reactions should reflect the spirit, and respect the solemnity, that is intended. To not do so is off-putting.

Hi Dereck! Thanks for this great reaction! This song is beautiful, it was my fav' at the time when I was a teen and a big hit everywhere at the time especially in France where it remained No.1 for 16 consecutive weeks becoming the single that stayed the longest at that place! It was sold at 2 millions copies in the world.
Youssou N'Dour is a big star in his country Senegal (Dakar) since 80's and became a businessman and a politician.
I remember I bought the CD 2 titles at the time and in this music video it's the LP version which is longer with a musical bridge. In the CD single it's the "radio edit" 4'10.
The M/V shot in New-York and in black and white directed by a French director Stéphane Sednaoui who he's also a photographer and a producer.
There are plenty of remixes of this song and and it is sung in 3 languages : French, Wolof and English.
They also did another song together "Undecided" in 1995, in a Re-mix Version by the French Deep Forest (World Music, New Age, electronic Music), BETTER than the album version!
He also did another duo with Axelle Red (a Belgian female singer) in 1998 for the Worldcup 1998 (anthem) whose music he composed.
Neneh Cherry is a female singer from 1988 with her big hit Manchild (My fav! With a "rap session") and another hit: Buffalo Stance. Why don't you react on her for the first time?
