Teams could turn in their unused tires to Goodyear until they conspired to use the system against a new competitor that was “too fast”. In 1978 the Dion Brothers team from New Hampshire, with Dave Dion driving, entered their small team for the Richmond 400. They went very well, qualified 4th. When the Dions went to get tires from Goodyear for the race they were reluctantly told that they had none left. The other teams had taken all of the tires Goodyear had brought which was more than a sufficient amount for the whole field that weekend. This left the Dion’s having to run McCreary tires. After the race the other teams turned in a huge amount of Goodyear tires. This unsportsmanlike action by the teams caused Goodyear to end the policy of turning tires back in effective at the next race.

First of all, Goodyear doesn’t want the tires back after you’ve mounted them on rims and inflated them, and taken them out of their sight and done whatever to them. I bet Goodyear would also say there’s nothing wrong with those tires X amount of days later, if cared for properly they’ll perform just as good. How long after they’re made does Denny think they sit before being used? I bet he’d be surprised. Definitely get a Goodyear engineer in there to answer some questions.

This is 100 percent the responsibility of the teams, not the tire vendor. Teams demand X number of tires every weekend and Goodyear produces, and delivers them to the track each weekend. The top teams decide that they can only use the "freshest' tires every weekend so leftover tires are deemed unusable. Good enough for the "back marker" teams but not good enough for the elite. That is the elites bitter pill to swallow, not anyone else's. There are two very simple solutions to this problem but likely no one would agree to it so again the teams need to own this issue as their own. Otherwise they could settle on one tire to run at every track so there would never be "old" tires, or just run the old tires.

As others have pointed out, why should Goodyear buy them back & be stuck with the bill because you didn't use them. Sorry we wrecked our car on lap 1, therefore Goodyear give us back $20,000 for these 8 sets of tires we haven't used. Goodyear is ultimately a business, they need to make money too. Its the same in every other form of racing, F1 also wastes endless amounts of tires because if you issue set amounts to each team some will use more than others. The only other solution would be to make Truck/Xfinity wheels the same as Cup again & then use the same tire compounds across all the series (with simply 1 type of compound for each of Short Track/Intermediate/Road Course/SS) so then if Cup teams want to sell to recoup so cash they can to lower series teams.
Also with the JGR figure is that just cup or across Cup & Xifnity

I don't think he really knows the true facts. He has owned a Cup team now for 3 or 4 years and his own JGR crew chief told him the facts. I think if I had 100's of thousands of dollars worth of unused tires in storage as a team owner I would know!

But what Nascar and Goodyear do not tell you is that those tires are bought by the teams, but the teams cannot take the unused tires back to their shops.
Nascar does not allow testing at a nascar affiliated track, so that severely limits the testing locations a team can go to. and a way to not let teams do that is by denying them tires.
It's a racket, Goodyear used to go down the pits and garage areas and bore holes in the sidewalls so teams could not do testing or use them a a non nascar affiliated track. Now Goodyear takes the tires with the when they leave the track. I agree, make the other series use the same tie, but that would mean that they would need to switch to 18" tires.

Want to save money? Go to a spec tire. You run the same tire at every track. And yes, I know a tire may work better at one track than another. But every car would be at the same advantage or disadvantage. Make a tire that can go 500 mile/laps, reduce pit crews to a couple of members. The comments will reflect that no one actually wants to cut cost.

So Goodyear should produce these tires, so the teams have as many fresh sets as they want, but they should take them back after producing them, because the teams want fresh tires for the next race? What should Goodyear do with them after issuing refunds? That’s like asking the grocery store to take back the milk you bought because you didn’t drink it before it spoiled. Every once in a while I watch a nascar video and it reminds me why I hate it and stopped paying attention 20 years ago. This isn’t a Goodyear problem. What is Goodyear going to do with these tires? If Goodyear has to take them back, then the cost per set has to go up to cover the cost of Goodyear producing something they then have to trash. Ultimately the customer pays for everything. No free lunch. That’s a universal truth. The problem here is nascar rules driving different compounds at each track. I’m in favor of multiple compounds to choose from (the same choices all season long, every race) and you could likely use the extra tires within a few weeks.

I don't think Goodyear is doing anything malicious here. (And before any judgement, I'm a Michelin guy.) If the teams are able to get rebates for unused tires, that cost is passed to Goodyear to not only rebate, but to reclaim and recycle. So why should it be their problem? If a customer comes in and says "I need x amount of something", the supplier will happily supply the product, but they don't have a duty to buy back what is unused. Imagine going into a tire store, buying tires, and saying "yeah I don't need these. They're the right size, no defects, just don't need them". The supplier made the sale because you came in needing something, and it's not their problem that you bought too many.

It’s worse for IndyCar. Firestone (just like GoodYear) makes the teams purchase a certain allotment of tires but after each race all the tires (even the unused tires that you didn’t run) have to be turned back into Firestone. If you’re ever at an Indy car race, look at the tires and how old they are on the cars they’re coming out of the transporters……some are actually old GoodYear and GoodYear hasn’t been involved either IndyCar in more than 25 yrs. All of those cars coming out of their haulers are on old, ratty tires, some even Continental or Avon. 😮

I also find it extremely interesting that this is just now being brought to light....how long has denny been in NASCAR? And how long has he been a partial owner in a team? Seems he didn't give a damn when it wasn't "his" money being spent so to speak....now that he has some real skin in the game it's a concern....guess all those years solely being a very well paid driver from JGR the expenses didnt matter....

Don’t kid yourself. If the teams saved this much money, it certainly wouldn’t be used for employer bonuses. The owners would just get richer.

Except I bet the Goodyear NASCAR tire business is not a mega profit center for them. Develop and mfg short run short lead time tires and provide all the track support for 2400 a set. Seems pretty damn reasonable if that’s truly the all in cost for a set and doubt the air making 50% margin. Also imagine year one of Nextgen was an outlier otherwise they would have quoted last year.

This is a silly approach to a silly problem. Car tires can only be recycled into playground mulch or ground up and mixed into asphalt.. you can't make new tires out of old tires. the easy answer would be to limit the set of tires allowed per weekend. Denny says himself "Nobody want's to be the guys that run out of tires before the end of the race" you either put everyone in that predicament -OR- you order extra tires, and no Goodyear can't make new tires out of your old tires.... and you won't buy 4 month old tires from Goodyear because you want NEW ones.
You could apply the same logic to food from the grocery store. buy 4 Lbs of ground beef, use 3 freeze 1, 4 weeks later when you want burgers why thaw that pound in the freezer, buy 4 more use 3 and freeze 1..... some people have 5 lbs of ground beef in the freezer, save it for a cook out.

  • @PortFan
    @PortFan Місяць тому +9

Why is this Goodyears fault, you purchase the tires and didn’t use them. You don’t want to keep them because the rubber goes bad, but you want Goodyear, who made the tires take them back and not be able to use them either. Kind of like going to McDonald’s, eating half your fries and then asking first a refund. If Goodyear did this, they would raise the cost of tires to cover the expense of eating the cost of the tires you return. I get it that it sucks, but at this level of racing it’s called the cost of doing business.

In my opinion, that's a bad comparison stating eating half the fries and returning them. That's not what denny is saying at all. You should have the right to return something if it has not been used.People do it all the time every day, 365 days a year. You buy something at a store. You end up not using it and you return it.There's nothing wrong with that. Also goodyear can reuse the tires by grinding them up and reusing the compounds. The amount of money that nascar brings to goodyear is staggering. The teams should be able to either get a refund or credit towards a different tire in my opinion.
