In this video I build an organizer insert for my messy hobby tool drawer. This build was created quickly using two sheets of $1 foamcore from Dollarama.

If you are curious about all the tools that I choose to keep close by in my most important drawer, I actually filmed a detailed tour video where I show what everything is and why I use them. I decided to to keep that portion out of the main video to avoid it getting too long. I have this secondary video uploaded separately and available to view for my Patron supporters: www.patreon.com/posts/28280102

I am going through the exact same process.Nice to see other people's solutions for ideas. I'd recently bought a number of new tools and a small train car of paints and dry pigments and need to re-organise my workspace and storage.
One additional wrinkle is my country is very dusty (to the extent that a disproportionate part of the population - me included - has asthma to some degree) so I cannot use open shelves. Who wants dusty paint pots? dusty tools?

Hey man, you're always such an inspiration! Quick question about mod podge, the little paper piece in the top of mine always sticks to the rim when I pull the lid off, will it not seal right and dry out if I just toss it?

The BOMBbats just toss it, it’s annoying. My containers end up a mess of hardened crap around the threads but the stuff inside stays fine.

Cheers for the vid, makes me realise I should probably do something like this to make crafting easier. I have a big under-bed pull-out tub full of all my crafting bits and pieces, and it is pretty much guaranteed that the tool I want is always buried at the bottom. Then a few minutes later I will remember something else I need, which is also buried right at the bottom... Foamcore seems like a great material for this kind of thing, not at all heavy if you have cheap/flimsy drawers full of stuff.

well whadda ya know, this video was perfectly timed, i just started reorganizing my crafting space today! i still need a way to organize some of my tools, and hadn't even thought to make a custom organizer out of foamcore, so even if it was a "boring" topic this was a super useful video for me.

That 7 inch space at the back would totally drive me nuts. I would probably try to swap out the slides for ones that allow better access, but you may be happy the way it is now. To each their own. Still love the tips. Happy crafting.

@@BlackMagicCraftOfficialAnd it's not like you would really use that back 7 inches with a blank drawer either, except for having really long things poking back there. I think of the back few inches of a drawer as "Narnia space". You dig back there once every few years and toss out the witch.

That drawer build video gave me instant Adam Savage vibes, and I love it. Your personal work and studio space is so important and you should never be sorry for a video that shows your progress in that space.
I mean I come back to miniature painting after a 15 year hiatus, and these videos about workspace, workflow and mindeset help me so much more in getting back into it then the 100th over the top painting tutorial.
I got family now, what I need is to invest time into a good work environment so I can enjoy the hobby with the limited time I got at hand.
So thanks a lot for the insight.

Is there any room for adjustment in the rails? I’m not familiar with ikea furniture. Or maybe a cheap set of rails that could give you full pull out? I mean, it probably isn’t that big of a deal. I don’t see it causing that much of a issue. I would put the things less used in the back.

Serious question because right now I keep all my miniatures in either cardboard boxes or plastic boxes. How do you keep all your miniatures dust free on open shelves? I find myself dusting my book and record shelves almost weekly. It seems that it would be a bigger job to do with all those miniatures. I have been looking at enclosed shelves but the prices have kept me from going that route.

    • @MonkeyJedi99

You get less dust with: no carpet or frequently (HEPA filter) vacuumed carpet, no open windows, no central air, no ways for dust to enter the room in large amounts while making sure you are getting it out periodically, paint instead of wallpaper, and starting clean while keeping clean.

My preference is to use shallow clip lid containers of various sizes which allows you to move them around in the drawer. It also means you can lift out whichever containers you need and place them on your hobby desk - which prevents stuff from rolling around as they're already in their own box.
Plenty of choice out there for segmented boxes, containers within containers, etc to build up your own system.
And if you need to take some of your hobby tools away with you - they're already packed and ready to go!
ps - make sure you label them! 😉

If you actually plan a drawer, you could draw it on the back of last year's desk calendar page (good big paper). Folks, remember what he discovered: put the scissors and other long things front to back, not sideways. Better use of the space at the back.

this is completely relatable, I'm in a rut right now because I don't have any space or means to organize my crafting. so I have my land lord building 12x16 foot shed in the back dedicated to my crafting. but I would be interested in seeing an update of your crafting room and what organization technics you can't live without.

Cool idea. I used foam core for boardgame dividers (Gloomhaven) and I can see it used for other storage. Cheers!

I've got a mid-size sterlite draw set on my desk and I used cardboard and duct tape to do a very similar thing. It's exceptionally helpful, especially as someone with ADD who struggles with organization. I've also built a number of additions onto my desk using duct tape and either cardboard or wire hangers. I've got spots for headphones, controllers, art supplies, and more.

Velcro is also very useful. I've got my remote hanging from the underside of my desk with some velcro. Pro tip, though: always put the fuzzy side on what you'll hold, otherwise it'll be super scratchy in your hand.

Ah yes, total build time, 4 hours of which almost an hour was trying to find you needed for that project.

l just purchased three sheets of this foam board today..it's normally $11.90 AUD ($10.81 CAN) but today, because they had the wrong price on the rack/shelf that it was on, l only got charged $5.90 AUD ($5.36 CAN) so at that price l grabbed 3 sheets..should have grabbed more but l don't know yet how far into the modelling I'll get..

Hello, nice video as always! I wanna ask, with all of that open shelves, the miniatures and terrains are cover enought or they take dust? And if they take dust, how you deal with it?

CUTLERY TRAYS. Thats what i use, Ikea cutlery trays are pretty good and designed to fill up a drawer nicely.

Thanks for this. I am in this exact phase right now and it's great to see you apply the mind of a carpenter to the problem.

I came across this at the right time, Thanks. I am an automotive modeler, I'm also branching out to other types of modeling. I have a 3 tier case that I use to carry my models to various contests that I enter into. I've used some foam padding that was meant for like chair seats, backs and so on, it's about 1-1/2 inch thick. I've been thinking about using foam board to replace that foam that has always has been breaking down and making a mess. Today being New Years day it's time for a new way of carrying my projects and keeping them protected the bottom tier will be for my emergency tool kit. Our genres of modeling might be different but a good idea is still a good idea. Thank you
