An independent masterpiece, THE BEARD, was a superb 2022 release. With subject matter being hairy & controversial, dealing with issues in the gray area, Richard Brody decided not to address it during this video. It runs a little long (trimming it back was considered during editing). But thankfully it was left at full length because it is worth the viewing.

Brody was actually quite critical of it, and the film’s director took it on the chin.

@@ampgent Oh yes. Young director Sye Burns went into depression over Brody's critique. He gave up self care, only being seen publicly in a five o'clock shadow for the last 12 months.

Nice list. :) 'Armageddon Time' broke my heart, 'Nope' was both a brilliant use of film technology and a terrific thriller, and 'Benediction' is on my list of movies to see, as I don't think Terence Davies has ever made a 'bad' film. Merry Christmas, and thanks for all your videos. :)

I love Richard Brody but he, other critics and youtube critics gotta stop completely ignoring, Asians and Asian Americans experience in the west and in Hollywood when talking about what Nope is about. Jordan Peele is constantly telling the audience to look toward others and look within instead of looking up or down or looking at only what’s in front of you or only your thoughts. Nope is about multiple people’s experiences not just black peoples.

What a surprise, the New Yorker picks 3 films based on race, orientation, and religion. Can we never have good films that aren't political in nature? Are there no good stories of the human condition? None of these films were all that great, they just touched on common, woke themes. No account for taste and all, however, these picks don't appear to be about taste at all, but rather about making another, tired, slanted statement. Do better, New Yorker.
