Improving Fish Welfare around Slaughter with Electric Stunning, Fish Farm Animal Welfare

Today I was working on animal welfare at a local fish farm. They are developing methods to increase fish welfare associated with fish slaughter in aquaculture fish farming. This type of electric stunning would be used prior to percussive stunning followed by exsanguination (bleeding). This method is an approved method in US aquaculture and electric stuns the fish within 1 second; which is the gold standard and is required in EU aquaculture. We are also planning to look at EEGs to evaluate the stages of anesthesia. This is part of a larger study at UC Davis and Oregon State funded by the USDA Western Regional Aquaculture Center. We will be looking at food science metrics to assess fillet quality and shelf-life.
