Is your Add-in Ribbon Menu disappearing? A recent Microsoft Office security update has caused Add-in Ribbon Menu Bars to disappear when Excel is opened.

Microsoft released an Office Update in July 2016 that is causing this issue with installed add-in Ribbons disappearing. The security update is blocking files that have been downloaded from the internet.
Files downloaded from the internet now have a Security property that is automatically set to Block. When you open regular Excel files (.xlsx or .xlsm), you will get a security prompt asking you if the file is safe.
However, there is no security prompt for add-in files (.xla, .xlam). That means there is nothing to tell you why the add-in ribbon disappeared.
So if you have downloaded an Excel Campus add-in recently, or an add-in from another site, then you might not be seeing it load up when you open Excel. Argh!!!

Thanks so much! Your videos set the standard for clearly presenting information that would otherwise be difficult for non-techies to understand. This is a great example as you explain how to fix the problem immediately (excellent if you are mid-project and just need an answer NOW!) and an even better option to avoid future issues. The fact that Macros just disappear, and Excel doesn't tell you why, is the type of situation that makes one want to give up altogether, or at least throw your PC out the window. That solution, however, gets expensive.

Thanks, worked right away. I was trying bunch of fixes from MS and none of them worked. This one worked right away. You will have close all sheets and open.

Thanks for the great videos and information you share with us, is there a way to move custom ribbon added from one computer to another, ex for that. I've added a custom tab (x) with custom ribbons buttons including macros in that x tab, is there a way to share this excel with other people and they can see that customized tab with the ribbons ? thanks

Hi John, I created an add-in but using Visual Studio, not the xla file like the one on the video. I am having the same trouble (ribbon menu disappearing) with some users, but not all... Do you have any clue what could it be?

Thanks for posting the video.. some how it didn't work in my work place. I am trying "Good + Fast " addin .. the ribbon menu is visible only till "Good + Fast - Excel Add-In.xlsm" is opened in excel 2010.
I did some more search-research and got it working after [1] saving it form xlsm to xlam [2] save it in the secure path
Main thing I liked the humble way for like and subscribe.. that too at the end of your video (not in the beginning or between)

Thanks for this very clear explanation. My problem is that -- with one exception* -- a new tab is not created for ANY of my existing or new Excel AddIns, when I select them. For example, when I recently created a new "MenuRighter" add-in, it seems to load correctly when I open Excel (I can even see the VB code for the add-in), but no matter what I do, no new TAB is created. I have tried everything, including "unblocking" and "trusted locations". *The exception is "ASAP Utilities" which creates a new tab each and every time I select it, just as I would expect. Do have an idea of what might be going on and how to solve? (I am running 32-bit Excel: (16.0.12527.20260) Many thanks!
Hello this is good. Question on whether this is an issue ONLY for Addins. In other words if i have an excel xlsm workbook with a custom ribbon tab, does that also disappear with that security update and does the trusted location fix that. Thanks for any feedback

Hello Jon......I created an Excel Add-in but it won't display under the Add-in tabs. I tried with Excel 2013 and Excel 2016. The add-in is saved in the Microsoft folder for addins (AppData>Roaming, etc.)
Things I've tried....
Excel Options > Add-ins > Excel Add-Ins > Go .... Select it.
Excel Options > Add-ins > Disabled Items > Go ... I made sure it wasn't disabled.
Right click the XLAM file > Properties > General Tab > Select Unblock....(This actually wasn't even an option for me. The UNBLOCK check box did not appear on the window).
Excel Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Trusted Locations > Add the directory where I store my add-ins
Excel Options > Trust Center> Addins ..... I made sure that "Require Application Addins to be signed by Trusted Publisher" was unticked
After each of these steps, I've closed Excel and reopened it. Also, this is my first ADD-IN, so if there is some code I'm supposed to include in my script, please let me know. I thought just saving it as an XLAM file would do the trick. Thank you! Very frustrating.

I believe you still need to make the security update to the file even if you put the file in a Trusted Location. Otherwise it will not work.

There is one other thing you can try, which is to Unblock the file. The following article explains how to do this at the bottom of the page. www.excelcampus.com/vba/add-in-ribbon-disappears/
This has worked for some people when the trusted locations did not work. I hope that helps.
