    Can I make a suggestion. Do not bring the boxes from the grocery store into your home. Take it from a licensed pest control operator. Bugs love to hide inside the cardboard.

    I took our tax return this year and decided to start a running freezer and "pantry" but its really more like a store. After struggling last year when coronavirus started and everything in the stores was empty, i vowed to keep a running rotation. I made a list of everything we use the most often. Meats that i could buy in bulk packages at sams and break into smaller sets. I have kept up with it and i literally have everything we use at all times. The only thing i buy weekly is fresh fruit produce and dairy and different breads. I have everything from pantry foods, all person items bathroom necessities, cleaning supplies.. you name it. It's here. It's been great for meal planning too!

      As for breads on You Tube there is a guy who has a no knead bread channel called Artisan bread with Steve. It changed the way we keep bread on hand. His parmesan Italian herb bread is awesome. I rarely have bought bread in three years. Uses 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of yeast and develops over 18-24 hours. Its so flexible. Those loaves are almost $5 at our local grocer now! Little Village homestead on YT has a Easy home made bread recipe that can be bread, rolls and cinnamon rolls. I save so much money making my own baked goods now.

    TOMATO PASTE SUGGESTION: Prep. tomatoes: remove skins and seeds. Place in a food processor and blend until smooth. repeat until you can fill a gallon-sized pitcher. Place in the frig. overnight and allow to separate. Drain off the "tomato water" -- save for making soup. Freeze the raw paste in the bottom of the pitcher in ice cube trays. Pop out and store in the freezer in ziploc bags. Yum!

    Added plus is I can the drained liquid for soups, flavoring, etc. 👍

    I’ve got a really good tip for you about hummus. If your multicooker has a dehydration setting or if you have a food dehydrator, you can dehydrate your hummus. This ends up as a powder which can be stored in a glass jar. You just need to add water when you wish to reconstitute it. So you might make up 4 tablespoons of hummus powder at a time. Brilliant!

If it’s shampoo, buy two bottles, if it’s kitchen staples buy the one you need plus one or two for storage. I’ve built a nice supply of items for cushion in harder times.

    Single senior here - I stock up on Freeze dried foods (not military rations) example: 1 gallon size can of corn (no additives) I get fruit, veggies, proteins, then can make soup with a cup of water, and tablespoon of each veggie I want, some bullion, protein - no waste, in lightweight cans easy for me to handle. Tastes like fresh I can use in casseroles or salads, even pizza. Shelf life up to 25 years, once opened 1 year shelf life. Love it. Note I can't find your pizza sauce recipe ... help

    Never heard of putting mustard in tuna salad, but love the open face on crusty bread idea. My mother , God rest her soul, used to make our ketchup and spaghetti sauce, I LOVED helping her! One year she realized we had planted too much cabbage in the garden so we made and canned so much sauerkraut , we gave some to aunts and uncles and a few favorite neighbors , they loved it. I had such a hard time getting my stocking started, I felt like I was so late getting started that anything I did wouldn't be enough. I tried several things that different videos suggested but IDK why, I just couldn't get started. I finally just took $100 and went to Sam's and got 100# each rice, beans and flour, a couple large 3# shortening cans, 50# sugar, 25# salt, a large jar of baking powder and a large package of baking soda. That would probably be $200 now. And I slept well that night. After that I was able to get the "other" things, no problem. Everyone is different, for me, I needed something more to start with than a week's worth. If you haven't started, I hope this helps you.

      I often make a trail mix for my hubs too as I can control what goes in as if I left it up to him he grabs the one with lots of chocolate in it. I will put a few bit of chocolate in for him but not as much as a commercial blend would have but I also put in his favorite cereal for snacking those strawberry or blueberry shredded wheat bites. He likes those better than granola.

However, in the last 6-9 months, the products I have used to make them just do not seem as good as they used to. My clothes didn't come clean. I had to switch to store bought laundry soap and it was a remarkable improvement. I don't know if it is the last two years that changed things, but it had become a waste to make my own because it just wasn't cutting it. This is great. I will give the aldi tuna a try then. I usually buy tuna in olive oil as I need the calories and the oil helps you absorb the omega benefits better. Plus im kinda gross and will fry a couple eggs in the tuna oil.
      I have no clue where I got the love of oily little tins of fish from.
      But for my emergency stash we like the chicken noodle soup from Aldi. There are times when even waiting for my homemade from frozen isn't fast enough and popping open that .49cent (usd)can and heating it just hits the spot. Usually its because I'm the last one to get sick and I'm home alone lol.

    • @laurenandreas5950
      @laurenandreas5950 2 роки тому +3

      Oil and shortening is the big dilemma in healthy cooking/baking. Avocado oil works for frying but it’s high in omega 6, coconut oil foams when you put enough in the pan to fry. Sometimes you just want to make real French Fries or maybe a real Fried Chicken ! I was very sad when we learned how bad Canola Oil is. It was so much less oily tasting than vegetable oils. I have threatened to buy some and keep it in the freezer since it doesn’t have a rancid smell when it goes bad….ingesting that is highly inflammatory to your body. Needless to say, it’s impossible to find a healthy oil to deep/pan fry with.

I finally realized an easy way for me was to think “12” months of what item. For instance we eat pasta of some sort typically at least once a week. So I needed 12 spaghettis, 12 elbow noodles, shells, rotini, lasagna, etc. Then I make our sauce for some meals but thought I would like “convenience sauce in jars” too. Like you I’ve just purchased enough items to make homemade powdered laundry detergent to last a year. That’s my fall back plan as well.
