Awesome truck. Rode in one once, crazy climbing ability.
That 5 gallon Jerry can...for those times when you need to get an extra 60 yards down the road.
Underrated!😂
Hello everybody. I have a Deuce that belonged to the Brazilian Army. Here it is just called REO M-35. It was manufactured in 1963, used by the US Army and sold to Brazil as a surplus. It served my country's land force for many years until it was decommissioned and auctioned. Today he is at the service of our college here. It is the school's mascot and adored by our students. I am very happy to see so many enthusiasts around the world of this magnificent truck.
I recently bought a running 1966 Deuce & 1/2 for $1525 from a GSA auction. It is also equipped with a 900-gallon water tank and pump and makes a great off-road fire truck. Couldn't be happier!
Brings back memories when I was in the Massachusetts Air National Guard and I got to drive a deuce and a half. Great video should have started the truck up. Thank you Roger from Miami Beach
Nunca más el usa army tendrá transportes como la generación de vehículos que empezó en la guerra de corea M38 Jeep, M 37 Dodge, M 35 Reo, M51 Diamond truck Por suerte KIA los está haciendo con motores modernos y frenos de aire
I served at Ft Devens...
The pinions, front and rear are not to add axles, but to make the axles interchangeable. All 3 axles are the same, with a front and rear pinion. You can take any of the 3 axles and put it in any position, front or rear. You bust an axle, you just take any good axle off another busted truck. COOL RIDE!
You don't put a steer axle in any position. You can, however, take the center section and put it in any position.
@@doug6885 You're right. Forgot the steering part, but as you say, the center section is the same. In war, they tried to make everything interchangeable. No time to order special parts! :)
Where is the pto for the winch ?
@@patrickhorvath2684 There's no pto because there's no winch. You CAN add one, but it's not cheap. It's cheaper to get a 24v winch and make a bracket to mount it.
See, when you make the best out of every situation you sometimes get to see or experience things that you might have never seen or heard of otherwise
Those home edition videos are a great idea to bring the community together, thanks to everyone who participated :-)
One word: BEAST! There's a reason that truck was made for the military.
He gets 10 out of 10!!!..Awesome military truck...love the big 6 cyl motor...nice.
I have a 1968 M35A2. I love my truck. I use it and abuse it moving things around my property and running errands. It was my daily driver for the first year I owned it.
HELL YES A M35A2 IS AWESOME. I OWN A 1966 BOBTAILED MULTI FUEL, RUNS GREAT, PAINTED IN WWII REMEMBRANCE COLORS
Bob tails are insults to Deuce and a half's.
I drove an M35A2 in the army. Even in sub-zero weather, we never used ether to start. Ours had a glow plug set up that pre-heated the fuel. When nothing else would start, the Deuce would.
Agreed Charles. I don’t have starting fluid in mine and even running on straight used motor oil, it’ll start in the cold. The coldest I’ve started it was about -10F and it popped right off. 22-1 compression seems to make a heck of a lot of heat when starting. I just hold the fuel cut while cranking it to warm the piston crowns for about 5 seconds and then let her go and she pops right off. 👍
Love driving mine. It has become sort of a local celebrity. Getting flood victims out of their homes and clearing downed trees. They respond well to fuel pump adjustments. Mine doesn't care what you put in the bed. It just rides smoother with 6 ton of gravel in it.
You can purachase a kit for these trucks that will tie your air into the steering system to give you air assisted Steering, which is almost as good as regular power steering.
If you aren't strong enough to steer this truck, you shouldn't have one.
@@garymathena2125 I personally have never had a problem steering one, I only made the comment because when I used to live in Berks County, Pennsylvania, most of the Fire Companies had them as Brush Trucks, and most of them had the trucks retrofitted with the air assist power steering. The Deuce is not all that hard to turn, even without power steering. I have driven old dodges from the early 60's that did not have it, and they were a bit of a bitch to try and turn around in tight spaces, especially if you were stopped
The deuce-and-a-half is a living legend still in use in 40 countries 😊
Air wipers made my day lol.
I've got many miles of driving a Deuce when I served. !0 wheel drive at the flip of a switch (it will knock smaller trees down!) and snuck me off to some good fishing places no other truck could (Shhhh they frown on that), the Jeeps were fun too.
"Is it possible he had learned to avoid the unique sound of my Deuce and a Half's Mil-spec engine? I do not have the answer at this time."
-Burt Gummer, Tremors 2: Aftershocks.
I remember Driving and Working on them when I was in the Army, drove one Many Times in the Gulf War, brings back a Lot of Memories 😊
That’s strange, Fortunate Son started playing all of a sudden. Awesome truck 👍
That truck brought back some fun memories. I drove one and a 109 van when I was in the army. For those who don’t know what a 109 van is it’s a deuce with box on the back to make it a portable shop. It has a big shop table, cabinets and heat in it. Some people covert them to overland campers. I loved them both. Great truck dude and thanks for the memories.
@knightwing4, that's what I want is a 109. I want to make an all wheel drive off road motorhome out of it.
These Trucks are fairly cheap to purchase, and extremely cheap to insure as well. They are fairly dependable, but slow on the roads with a max speed of approx 55 mph, downhill with a strong tail wind pushing you. But they are extremely loud inside the cab, since the exhaust pipe runs right up from the engine directly at the right front cab corner. Good hearing Protection is highly recommended if you plan on driving any length of time and distance. They can be great multi use platforms, ranging from Troop/Cargo Carriers to Water/Fuel Trucks, Dump Trucks, Medium Duty Tow Trucks, Plow Trucks, and, one could even improvise one into the ULTIMATE BOV/APPOCOLYPSE ESCAPE TRUCK, OFF ROAD CAMPER TRUCK, and yes, there are even Fire Depts on Long Island, NY, and in Pennsylvania, and other States that have them set up as Brush/Forest Fire Trucks, aka, Stump Jumpers as they are called, and High Water Rescue Trucks. In short, these Trucks can be used in virtually any kind of scenario that one could possibly think of.
5 grand isn't cheap for a turn key one that has zero issues. Insurance I don't know about that.
@@IG107055 grand for a deuce is a hell of a lot cheaper than what brand new pickups are selling for, they are close to $100,000 now, depending on what size you want, and what it has in it. Insurance for a deuce is pennies on the dollar, because the deuce is virtually indestructible.
Couple of things, that's a 24v system, not 12. You can run gasoline, but you have to use a 15:1 ratio of gas to oil to lubricate the injectors.
34 cents a pound. What a bargain!!
I have owned 2 of these, nice trucks. just used mine for parades and events. I then went to 5 tons M923A2, whew, really nice, power steering and automatic transmission.
Drove this one for 6 years for Army Reserve. One hell- of-a truck!!
Very thorough video. Good condition of the truck considering the age. Drove non military versions of this thing at the airport. Had a lot of experiences with 30's on up in vehicles. From hand cranking engines to modern systems. Good times. :)
Best truck ever made, drove one for 7 years.
Brings back memories of my time in the Air Force! Thanks for sharing
who needs engine power when you have the gear ratio of a tractor lol.
You definitely should be running 15W 40 in that thing.
Did you see that big spider when he was showing the batteries ? I got the chills. Nice 6x6. I love it. I want one.
Powerful truck and beautiful designe
He got a deal on that gem!
You did a great job showing your Deuce and a half
I love them I used to work on them when I was in the army.i was a 64 b10 wheel vehicle mechanic.
We use to have one at our vacation property. Used it to run over dead trees on the property. We never could get that beast stuck. The truck was a blast!
Everyone needs a deuce and a half. You could pack near a half a dozen Samurai in the back, Ultimate tow rig!!!
I learned how to drive one and a sixteen wheeler and a jeep in one day in1969. They needed drivers I guess. I asked the instructor how much longer to get a explosive carrying license and he said 5 days but we need you guys tomorrow so he just gave me one. Good old days.
I like your Deuce & 1/2! Had one myself that I sold last year. It was fantastic! I drove it many thousands of kilometers, but the diesel is so expensive these days, so I had to get rid of it at long last...
Awesome truck!! Would love to have one myself!!
Nice truck. I would be proud to own it. Hopefully, I can buy one soon.😊
You should review the cheapest production side by side, that truck is awesome!
Love the truck. Good work.
Sweet truck man. I got to drive a newer one a month before I graduated high school in colorado. It was the best day of my life and did not stop smiling the whole time. I think it has a stronger engine but it has an automatic transmission(I would have preferred a manual), it's super torquey and the breaks were pretty touchy. I drove it offroad over some large gravel/dirt/boulder piles. They are super capable trucks. I don't currently own one but ever since I drove it I've always wanted to own one.
Edit: The color of the truck is desert tan.
Oh snap! TFL just dropped a deuce on us!
Had 20 of these in my unit in 1971 and none of them had over 100 miles on them with a few just broken in. I would like to say that when these were new they smelled pretty bad compared to any new car smell and most of ours had the huge winch on the front. The biggest downfall to these trucks was even with the ones that had heaters in them would barely keep you from freezing your ASS off. I wish I had one now.
Awesome video and very well informed u went over everything thanks a bunch
I love it actually drove one a lot of years ago. 4 wheel drive extrodanaire
Those things are a blast to drive. I loved it. Wish he would have fired it up. Thanks for sharing.
Loudest truck I have ever been in, also the best truck I have ever been in!!
My favorite truck! ❤
I have old Jeep XJ with factory turbo diesel engine and it runs on all type of oils too. 🙂
These things are a BLAST! Every time I thought, "this thing is never going to be able to do that", it just friggin did it. I actually prefer the deuce and half over the 5 ton. When my 1SGT retired, on his last day we hid his VW Beetle in the bed of a deuce and a half with the canvas bed roof on so he couldn't leave. haha So many memories.
Ran into a guy who was relocating and he had his 'vette stuffed into the back of his duece n half
I actually prefer the five ton trucks over the deuce and a halfs when it comes to reliability and longevity. There's very little that can go wrong with Mack or Cummins unless something extreme and stupid is attempted with any of them.Still, with the 22:1 compression ratio of the multi fuel engines it's incredible how easily those trucks can still crank even in negative temperatures.
Love it those old trucks were made for work not like the new modern trucks would love to ride in it.
That Thing is AWESOME!!!!!!
10 out of 10! Love it!
awesome i've always wanted a deuce and a half!!!!
Dream vehicle for geeks. Everything is built-to-last, maintenance-friendly and modification-friendly. No fuss with all sorts of onboard computers or proprietary verifications or the notorious little yellow engine light. All controls are by mechanical means or by analog electronics.
12:00 Probably for running implements like a sawmill, etc off the driveshaft.
Now that was cool and easy to fallow!! Thank you!!
It reminds me a the 6x6 my grandpa had set up to spread liquid manure on the farm. I started driving it when I was 15 years old. Grandpa's had a gas engine.
A gasser? In a truck like that? What is that? A gallon per minute? haha
The M-35 was the first model and had a gasoline engine! Two barrel I think. It even had a grease fitting on the carburetor, some kinda linkage. They also had a 20+ pound, 25 amp generator with a shoe-box sized regulator! Yep. Great trucks! 👍🇺🇸👍
@@kentporter2991
Actually, the M34 "Eagle Beaver" was the very first prototype and it mainly used the body, frame, and chassis of the GMC M135-M211.
The differences were the front end, cab, engine, and transmission.
Instead of the GMC 302 the prototype used the OA-331 from Reo and Continental which later on became thee engine for the original series of the M35's.
Also, they used the Spicer 3053A transmissions instead of the automatic transmissions that all of the GMC two and a half ton trucks used. The Spicer transmissions were entirely used for the complete production of deuce and a halfs until the trucks were discontinued.
Brings back memories. I rode in those in the late 80's
Very good 👍
I like these military vehicles.
Wicked in great shape 6x6 very impressive! :)
Nice! He is local, have to keep an eye out for it. The multi-fuel is the best, runs on anything!
That is cool. Maybe one day I will have to space to get something like that.
Awesome, Wish I Had A Deuce & Half Truck
Beautiful truck. Would love to see some driving videos of it. 👍🇺🇸
a real beauty that truck
Cool truck. I worked on those when I was in the Marine Corps. 3521 orah!
Beautiful
Love it !!
The Real Deal in
Off Road Heavy.!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😊👌
HELLO OLE FRIEND--THE TANK TRAILS WE HAVE ROAD --THE MUSCLES YOU BUILT IN MY ARMS --THE MUSIC YOU PLAYED THROUGH YOUR TURBO---I HOPE MIKE TREATS YOU WELL
Very awesome! 👍👍
awesome truck
If it was the last trip from the field to the PX, 48 troops would fit!
We have one, It’s amazing. you will get deaf, but with a huge smile on your face all along.
Nice stock version. I would love to see one of these made into a fully stainless steel body. That would permanently solve the rust issues.
Stainless would be very hard to paint, and with as much flexing as these trucks are subjected to, the welds would probably crack over time.
Kinda forgot to mention the six wheel drive switch.😉
The 71 is my go to 👍!
I love deuce n half's, but I prefer a 5 ton
There were lots of this beautiful M35 in Vietnam.
There’s no way the truck comes with a T.O. I’m definitely buying one 😂
I have one for sale drive it home.... 6000
@@jamesswanson1139 I literally just bought a motorcycle. I’d consider if I had the extra cash
Nice!! A start up would have been nice.... :-)
Awesome i really like it
Awesome I love big trucks...
My deuce fires without flame heater or either even down to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. I have yet to have trouble starting at any temperature.
I like this truck its Amazing to see Wows
Very neat
Did not have a duce but did have a Mog and later a Pinz. Crazy about both of them. Did want a duce though.
LOVE IT........
Sweet truck.
7:43 Gearbox with synchronizers
Awesome
Awesome 👍 video WOW, I definitely will get a Millitary 6x6
I had a 1968 model and I rarely had to use ether to start in cold weather. I wonder why that is. I know some diesel engines are just really cold Blooded. Used to have a road grader with a Detroit 6L71T that would not cold start without ether ever. lol. Wish I would have put that engine in the deuce.
The LDT-465's & LDS-465's in the M35A2's-M756A2's had 22:1 compression ratios which made major differences among other vehicles when starting in the cold.
Alot of these trucks would crank just fine even in -5°F on sloppy motor oil or diesel as long as the piston crowns are still good and have been pre-heated decently.
On another note, when using gasoline it's wise to use 15:1 ratio mixed with diesel or oil so that the injectors remain lubricated.
The multi fuel engines weren't the best on torque, but gearing ratio made up for that in many ways.
Still,I always liked the five ton trucks alot more, mainly the variations that were Mack or Cummins powered.
Zombie Apocalypse vehicle - Deflector on the front to keep brains from plugging the bottom portion of the radiator, and just drive straight through the crowd!
Protesters on the road! no problem 😉
Definitely wasn't expecting less than 200hp when was saying the engine specs😂
its a tank, whats the rush.
The multi-fuels we're never known for horse power. The cat engines they used later in the A3 series were more powerful. Imo, the A2 series is fun to drive since it has a manual vs an automatic transmission.
That is 130 with the turbo. Naturally-aspirated versions ran 125 horsepower, and rolled coal like nobody's business. The turbo was to kill the smoke.
cool i want one
