Just to clear up confusion my 100 year old Great Grandmother in this video is still alive. It's my Grandmother, her daughter who passed away. May she be fabulous in heaven 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
+Shameless Maya sorry if I confused anyone... the video was very clear to me which in fact is why i felt inspired to share my story on my videoing history....and thanks again for sharing
+Shameless Maya you are sooo lucky to have your Great Grandmother in your life to share such stories with you. After watching this video, I shared it on my fb page. Each one, teach one! Amazing!
OMG :( Maya I'm truly thinking about you! Losing so many people close to your heart. But just remember they are not necessarily lost because you know exactly where they are. Heaven :)💖
When I was a kid we were called colored. Colored people didn't want to be called black because we were taught black was ugly and ignorant. James Brown made a song called *Say it loud I'm black and I'm proud* To this day I'm proud to say I'm Black because it brought us together. It really upsets me when I'm called African American because I was not born in Africa. I was born in America.. I am a Black American.
The average african is a blk person so this was you way of calling them u g l y. I have always noticed this. You cant call yourself anything other than blk which why you moved onto calling a f ri cans ugly
This is beautiful. I don't regret much but i really wish i had taken the opportunity to get my grandparent's wisdom before they passed. Good for you sis and granny looks fabulous
This is what you call hear it from the horse’s mouth knowledge from a great gran who’s all their and has no trouble remember back love that and respect to her these are the people I like to listen to.
i Maya..(im a french girl) i discovered you since you cut your hair, I usually dont comment...but..today i have to😄 Wow..👌😌 im sure your grandma will meet Mr Obama 😌 I love this video, you keep doing YOU (on youtube) after all this years👑 all beauty channel is almost the same now.. but you..still original bravo! i try to do a better person everyday and you help me a lot, you have a beautiful family. Gob bless you and your family Maya💓
This is beautiful! I am so glad you shared it, brought back memories of my great grandmother as well. And so many people say slavery was 500 years ago, there are ppl still living today to tell you about the cruelties that were suffered. Hopefully we can be kinder to each other, because we are all human beings, as you Great Granny mentioned. Wishing her many more youthful years!
maya, what a wonderful gift to have known this woman. i have a great aunt who i believe is 96 and i would love to meet her one day just to talk and learn from her. we are losing our elders that have so much rich history in their memories
Rest in peace to your great grams and your granny. Older relatives are GEMS. Thank you for sharing her with us. I have family from that area too who also migrated to Chicago. So many of us have way more in common than we think.
AND THIS JUST IN: SEASON 2 OF DEFINING BEAUTY IS FINALLY UP! Find out more about your homie gurl, Shameless Maya and by watching it only on the app GO90 here: mker.tv/qiG9jV
+Shameless Maya I am not sure if you are aware of it, however you/your family may request a birthday greeting from the President. Here is the link www.whitehouse.gov/contact/presidential-greetings-request - the requirements are as follows: Birthday greetings are available for civilians celebrating their 80th (or greater) birthday and veterans celebrating their 70th (or greater) birthday. Please make your request at least 6 weeks in advance of the birthday. Include the following information in the comments box: Name and home address of honoree(s); Form of address (Mr., Ms., Mrs., Dr., Miss, etc.); Exact date of birthday (month, day, year); Age; Your (the requestor’s) name and daytime phone number; Any specific mailing instructions if other than to honoree’s address. **Now I realize that her birthday has passed, however considering she is Centenarian I am sure they will make an exception. For your Granny to be 100 years young I am sure she would be pleased to receive a greeting from our current African American President. :-) Happy Happy Birthday Granny - i hope that you know you are valued and loved.
+Shameless Maya One more thing -- this video really touched me because I was raised by my late grandparents who were born in 1914 & 1916 respectively. If Grandaddy was alive he would be 102 and Grandma would be 100 - what a blessing you have in your Granny!
+Shameless Maya What did your grandma mean when she said the Americans were with the Africans. Did she mean the Native Americans or African Americans? Thanks. Great video btw.
Powerful video! Your granny is so youthful, vibrant, highly intelligent and wise. And she’s from Mississippi and Chicago (like my people). Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for sharing. Sadly me generation has lost so much oral history. I recently had the pleasure of hearing Andrew Young jr, an 84 year old civil rights activist, and political figure. It was amazing, and such an honor. I can't wait for part 2 😁.
YEEEEES!! Grandma knows about the greens now! Haha. I love this. It reminds me of my family back in Charleston South Carolina. It actually made me cry a little, because we don't think about it but this lady lived in such a scary and hard time. My grandfather lived in Mississippi as well and he became a super successful business Man. It's just so amazing to hear about.
Your Granny is a beautiful woman and I can see how much you cherish her. That's a beautiful gift. Most of us don't realize this until our elders are gone.
Maya, this is so beautiful! And this is for two reasons: one, it's very interesting to hear someone who witnessed history tell you how it felt to live it. Two, you'll always have this memory of your granny and you will be able to show it to your grandchildren and cherish it forever. Your granny looks much younger and she remembers things clearly and articulates them perfectly. I literally can't believe she's 100 years old!
Wow. REAL. TALK. The realest. Words cannot express how much I love this. Thanks for sharing your Granny's story with us. My Nana is 92 and I can't wait to visit with her again. I hope to have an open and honest conversation like this about her life.
Love this video!! My Grandmother is also from Clarksdale, MS!!!! I absolutely LOVE your great grandmother without even meeting her. She reminds me of my grandmother sooo much. My Great grandmother and great grand father left Clarksdale, MS and moved to Chicago as well. A lot of people in Chicago have roots in Mississippi for that very reason.
This video touched my heart and soul on so many levels. what a beautiful Blessing. she is still so youthful and her mind is still so very sharp. I love it. God is good. God is great. like great grandma said....I ain't scurred lmbo.
I really love this Maya! My grandma died at 93 about 2 years ago and it is so amazing to see how she was always in the right spirit. She's so full of wisdom. I'm glad you took advantage of this learning experience and shared it with us. This is why I love your channel.
She reminds me of my grandmother. She favors my grandmother so much. I miss her and I wish I could of asked her these questions. Thank you for this video Maya!
Maya, your great grandmother is a true inspiration. So much wisdom packed in a just a couple of minutes. A century of experiences, strength, and courage, it's humbling to catch a glimpse of such a wonderful human being. Respect, that is all! I'm so glad I discovered your channel and I absolutely love your videos and what you do. Keep doin' you, boo!
It was such a blessing to be able to hear knowledge from your Great GrandMother. I'm sharing this video with my daughter in the morning. All young people need to see this.
I hope and pray that my grandmother lives to be that old. She's currently 63, her father past away at 99 after years of battling cancer and decided against any more medical treatment, and her mother past at 74 from a weak heart. My grandmother says she doesn't wish to live that long (born and raised in rural Alabama), but if I had it my way I'd keep her with me forever. Losing her mother (my great grandmother) was hard enough, I couldn't imagine losing her nor my mother.
I love this. Even across cultures and countries, she reminds me of my 96-year-old Filipino grandmother, who has seen so many wars and yet so resilient. Thank you for this.
I love this.... My grandmother passed at 95 8 yrs ago and the gift of conversations of her upbringing was priceless. It made me more grateful and proud of the life I built today. Young people today truly don't understand what suffering is. My grandmother had a 6th grade education and raise 12 children all while cleaning houses. I hope the young people who view this interview take the time to speak to someone older and who has LIVED through the toughest times and survived. Trust me those words of wisdom will follow you for ever. Thank you +shamelessmaya this put a smile on my face✌🏾
I love your grandma she reminds me of my great grandmother. So much wisdom strength she is the truth. You stick by her and you'll always have her message to share with others. Such a great spirit...God bless.
+Shameless Maya Thank you for sharing this with us! This Queen is an inspiration and a reminder that we've come a long way but still have work to do, Alhamdulilah. InshaAllah she gets to meet Pres Obama :)
+Shameless Maya Obama will be at Hillary's inauguration and since Hillary is your girl, all you have to do is get an invite and bring your granny with you. She'll get her wish.
+Shameless Maya use the President's own twitter page instead....'cause he controls and runs this one himself twitter.com/POTUS?lang=en @POTUS the other one is ran by his staff
I love your great grandmother! She is passionate and honest! You should document her life and write about it! I wish my grandparents were still here so that I could ask them about their lives as young people.
Such a blessing to have her around still! She's so beautiful :) May God continue to bless her and her family! My grandmother was born in 1917 but died just after her 95th birthday in 2012. I think about her all the time. I would have loved to have her around still...Old people are a blessing to us...cherish them :))
My God Maya, thank you so much for sharing this iconic moment with your great- grandmother. You are so bless girl; extremely blessed. Again, thank you for sharing my love ❤️ Makes me think about my folks in Haiti

Wow Shameless Maya, thanks for sharing this, your grandma has so much history and wisdom, and she is very sharp, what a beautiful woman. You really did an awesome job with this documentary!!
You are sooooooooo blessed to have a living , walking , talking history lesson to reference. Your Great Grandmother is just beautiful and an absolute joy to watch! I was raised by my Great Grandmother and she was born the same year as yours, u unfortunately, she passed away in 1998. She was also a living, breathing history lesson in my life as well. She gave me a lot of my Native American history growing up. Watching your Great Grandmother reminded me just how much of a blessing it is to know them and love them. Bless you both!
Wow! Amazing woman! What a blessing to have her as a grandmother! Definitely been inspired by granny. She will live on forever through her words of inspiration!!!! Thank Maya so much for sharing your grandmother with us!!! Truly a blessing!!!!

My grandmother (born 1933-2014) Grew up working on a plantation as well. Her father was a sharecropper and her grandfather was an Ex slave. I believe some of the land they worked on now belongs to PVAMU (an HBCU). I really wish I was more interested in my culture's history so I could ask her questions like these. R.I.P. My VV

R.I.P. My VV
She looks so amazing for a 100 year old! She's such a G!
