    I was 15 years old when this book exploded onto the scene and at that time I was collecting any and everything Kieth did. But The Maxx opened my mind and imagination to draw and paint! I learned who Frazetta was, who Wrightson was and my style progressed because of Sam. He taught me how to draw and paint and thank you guys for sharing your love of this series as well. Awesome vid!!

    Man, Sam Kieth is the guy who got me into comics...unbelievable style, remarkable talent-such a shame he doesn’t recognize it.

    Been waiting on this one. For me, Kieth checks more boxes artistically than just about any other comic artist.

    Interesting episode. Btw, those are just hyper-stylized engineer boots on the Maxx. That's the ring that holds the straps together. Standard issue for the industrial goth set.

    I received this book about three months ago and it was such a nostalgic trip I couldn't contain my cheesy grin. What an awesome opportunity to really look at the intricate nature of Kieth's work.
    The Maxx was my go to Image book that I ran to the LSC to pick up every month waiting to see what glory was in the pages.
    Great video guys!!

    Fax machines were integral back in the day. I faxed many a photocopied page of pencils for scripting. The worst thing about fax machines was the spam faxes you'd receive in the middle of the night. hahaha.

    Thanks for showing this off, as the years stretch on, more and more I see Sam Keith's The Maxx's influence on my own work. As a kid I was a fan of Spawn #1, then Savage Dragon, then Pitt , then Maxx...pretty soon Maxx became the number 1 book for me.

    It's amazing to me that as a kid, I wasn't big on Keith's work, although I knew it was "different in a good way"... i just didn't care for it. The older I get (I'm of a similar vintage to Ed), the more I appreciate it and look over all my Marvel Comics Presents issues in awe and what he was able to do.

    Always great and inspiring to hear you make a walk through a comic. Could you please do it for a CORTO MALTESE book. I never really understood the story of 'The Maxx' but I did enjoy Sam Kieth's work. Kieth seemed like a mixture of Frazetta and Looney Tunes. The black and white balance on these pages is really nice.

    45:15 You'll call out Calvin & Hobbes literally showing up a few pages later. But to me Sam Kieth is doing his Bill Watterson layout and style homage on this spread. It serves as a transition from the animated style on the last few pages back into his normal style. Totally screams Calvin & Hobbes to me.

    I never read any of this, but now I'm interested. Extremely odd mix of cartoon style, underground, 80s expressiveness, 90s... whatever, and classical illustrator qualities... Apart from the names already mentioned, Frazetta etc, his "ornamental" use of plants made me think of Burne Hogarth.

    Color really ruins this guy's work. It's so much better in black and white. I feel bad that this dude actively paid someone to make his work worse.

    • @LuisDiazArtist
      @LuisDiazArtist 3 роки тому +2

      I think you're wrong. Steve Oliff is a bad ass and if there is anything wrong with his coloring it's because he got the art super late in the production line. He was by far one of the best colorist at the time next to Joe Rosas/Joe Chiodo. Oliff was the guy who also colored Spawn for a few years. Sam Kieth's art is bad as in black and whit, but the color doesn't ruin his art. I think it worked very well in this series.

      @@LuisDiazArtist I'm not trying to insult the colorist, he may be the best colorist in comics for all I know. I just think Sam Keith's art looks best in black and white.
