I was 15 years old when this book exploded onto the scene and at that time I was collecting any and everything Kieth did. But The Maxx opened my mind and imagination to draw and paint! I learned who Frazetta was, who Wrightson was and my style progressed because of Sam. He taught me how to draw and paint and thank you guys for sharing your love of this series as well. Awesome vid!!
I received this book about three months ago and it was such a nostalgic trip I couldn't contain my cheesy grin. What an awesome opportunity to really look at the intricate nature of Kieth's work. The Maxx was my go to Image book that I ran to the LSC to pick up every month waiting to see what glory was in the pages. Great video guys!!
Interesting episode. Btw, those are just hyper-stylized engineer boots on the Maxx. That's the ring that holds the straps together. Standard issue for the industrial goth set.
This was such a nostalgia hit. One of my favourite comic runs back in the day. So unique. I used to love the painted work amidst the wonderful ink work - looks so good in black and white
Thanks for showing this off, as the years stretch on, more and more I see Sam Keith's The Maxx's influence on my own work. As a kid I was a fan of Spawn #1, then Savage Dragon, then Pitt , then Maxx...pretty soon Maxx became the number 1 book for me.
Fax machines were integral back in the day. I faxed many a photocopied page of pencils for scripting. The worst thing about fax machines was the spam faxes you'd receive in the middle of the night. hahaha.
Love your work, guys, I learn a lot about my favorite artist and the way they work and how they solve the story and graphic necessities. Thanks a lot from Cali, Colombia.
It's amazing to me that as a kid, I wasn't big on Keith's work, although I knew it was "different in a good way"... i just didn't care for it. The older I get (I'm of a similar vintage to Ed), the more I appreciate it and look over all my Marvel Comics Presents issues in awe and what he was able to do.
45:15 You'll call out Calvin & Hobbes literally showing up a few pages later. But to me Sam Kieth is doing his Bill Watterson layout and style homage on this spread. It serves as a transition from the animated style on the last few pages back into his normal style. Totally screams Calvin & Hobbes to me.
Just discovered this comic a while ago,I had never looked into it before because I’m not really a fan of the original image stuff but I was really blown away by how great it is.
i was just looking through my Maxx #4 at that arm. it is sick, but omg the black and white before inking is soooo much better. it seems like a lot of detail got lost when it was colored.
Always great and inspiring to hear you make a walk through a comic. Could you please do it for a CORTO MALTESE book. Maybe, you don't tackle European graphic novels, but it would be so great to watch and hear your input on some of those! Thank you for your videos, they are so smart and passionate!!!
@@CartoonistKayfabeCorto Maltese in Siberia, or Samarkand's Golden House could be great to comment on but the first one (ballad of the salty sea) would be fine. I would really love to hear you comment through those pages. Hugo Pratt was quite a character himself ; ) Thank you if you do it!!!
Some of the odd panel shapes remind me of puzzle pieces. I’d be surprised if he didn’t make them that way to indicate that he is giving us “pieces of the puzzle”.
Im 45. I grew up with this art. Have loved it ever since Maxx first came out. I remember the MAXX animated series. I am a huge fan of Michel Fiffe who i think might have been influenced a bit by Sam Keith
Love how Jim says prison bars are hard elements to deal with... First issue of the comic I'm working on takes place in a prison/cell... I agree with Jim!
I never really understood the story of 'The Maxx' but I did enjoy Sam Kieth's work. Kieth seemed like a mixture of Frazetta and Looney Tunes. The black and white balance on these pages is really nice.
Hello! It's hard to make out the name of the artists you keep referring to... it sounds like Arthur Sidum? Can you tell me how to spell his last name? I'd like to look him up...
I think the reason Keith takes a shot at Death's design in Sandman was because he was the one that designed her. From what I have read he was notoriously self deprecating.
I never read any of this, but now I'm interested. Extremely odd mix of cartoon style, underground, 80s expressiveness, 90s... whatever, and classical illustrator qualities... Apart from the names already mentioned, Frazetta etc, his "ornamental" use of plants made me think of Burne Hogarth.
I think you're wrong. Steve Oliff is a bad ass and if there is anything wrong with his coloring it's because he got the art super late in the production line. He was by far one of the best colorist at the time next to Joe Rosas/Joe Chiodo. Oliff was the guy who also colored Spawn for a few years. Sam Kieth's art is bad as in black and whit, but the color doesn't ruin his art. I think it worked very well in this series.
@@LuisDiazArtist I'm not trying to insult the colorist, he may be the best colorist in comics for all I know. I just think Sam Keith's art looks best in black and white.

Do you have any of the Marvel Comics Presents Sam Drew? Those were cool.
Man, Sam Kieth is the guy who got me into comics...unbelievable style, remarkable talent-such a shame he doesn’t recognize it.

Been waiting on this one. For me, Kieth checks more boxes artistically than just about any other comic artist.
Interesting episode. Btw, those are just hyper-stylized engineer boots on the Maxx. That's the ring that holds the straps together. Standard issue for the industrial goth set.
That's what I'm talkin about! Some of that Maxx!!! Where's the Sam Keith interview? He'd seem like he be fun to have on! Go C-K!
Sam was so important to my comics journey, thanks for the deep dive

Oh, man, this is brilliant. The Maxx was pretty much what kept me interested in comics for a number of important years in my teens. What a comic!
The Maxx is and always has been my favourite modern character ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Did anyone catch that Sam drew Julia with two left feet at 3:30 on that first profile cover of them seated on a ledge?
Thanks for this you Two!
His page layouts and drawing chops.... holey moley!

My all-time favorite comic creator. Full stop. I collect everything of his I can. Great video!
The missing caption blocks on the first page of The Maxx #1 featured his monologue about rain and the television series: 'Cheers'.
Just discovered this comic a while ago,I had never looked into it before because I’m not really a fan of the original image stuff but I was really blown away by how great it is.
3:22 Two left feet? Is this the girl characters unique anatomy, or am I seeing it wrong?
I need to complete my MAXX collection ASAP.
Sam Kieth is amazing
meep!
Any time Maxx is in his homeless disguise, the fabric shadows are straight up Watterson.
Goddamn, I wish I could find this Artist Edition for sale somewhere! I've been looking with NO LUCK!!
I can only find about two issues of the Maxx left in my collection. So many stuff got lost over in the years.
i was just looking through my Maxx #4 at that arm. it is sick, but omg the black and white before inking is soooo much better. it seems like a lot of detail got lost when it was colored.

Do you have a favorite Corto Maltese book? - Jim

Dave Feiss is actually Kieth's cousin. Kieth co-wrote with him the pilot for Cow And Chicken, Feiss' creation
that's wild!
The Crappon Inna Hat!
Man, I really hope to see a Sam Kieth interview on this channel one day.

SOOOOOO GOOD!!!!
Now that's some Sam Keith-ing!
Some of that fantastical animal design certainly gives a little nod to Dr Seuss.
Yess finally Sam Kieth !!! thank you

Arthur Suydam
are you two going to do a doom patrol episode?
Japanese White Posca Paint Pens for awesome whites.😊 (multiple sizes)
BFG big friendly giant is also a big influence
The Maxx was my favorite Image book. I've always thought that it had the best writing of any Image title up to that point.
Do you guys know where I can find the Maxx artist edition and other artist edition that the price will not break my wallet?
Fun fact. Keith's IS characters first appeared... in Critters!
Sam kieth is like early raw mcfarland on fucking steriods. He feels like a hybrid between him and miller in my opinion
I just picked up his marvel comics presents story line from my local shop. Amazing artwork
I think the reason Keith takes a shot at Death's design in Sandman was because he was the one that designed her. From what I have read he was notoriously self deprecating.
I think I understand why the artist is using such strange panels. In most cases he's in a way directing the direction your eyes will flow on the page.
sick vid

drooolllll... jjust
Color really ruins this guy's work. It's so much better in black and white. I feel bad that this dude actively paid someone to make his work worse.
