- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- Audi have just facelifted their supercar, the R8. The new V10 Performance boasts 620bhp, sharper looks and the promise of a better than ever drive. As someone who has never been a big fan of the R8 family, is this enough?
In order to give the R8 the fairest showing, we decided to take it on a bit of a road trip.

"Always having to stop for petrol is a complete bollock ache"😂
it about love of the car not about function now.... If you just want to go somewhere... get a plug-in hybrid.... or tesla... but if you just want to feeling... you can not beat a loud fast car with good cornering ablity...
@@campkira tesla would be even worse for long journeys, having to wait 30 mins for it to charge. I'd rather have more fun and do 2/3 more fuel stops with a super/sports car.
@@campkira driving from
London to scotland and back be more of a bollock ache in a 300 mile range ev. Would consume copious amounts of costa and buy other expensive crap in marks and sparks at the services while passing an hour for it to charge.
With the App system it really is a fast operation these days no need to queue once ur at ze pump
The pre-facelift model 11/10. I mean off the scales. Absolutely amazing. Loud and proud. Full of pops and bangs and crackles. Adds to the theatre. Really disappointing that the EU regulations have forced this face lift model to have quiter exhausts
The most fun I've ever had driving was on the Scottish West cost in my MGB GT. I miss that car.
Nice little hatchback, with plenty of leg room, a low center of gravity, and a throaty gutless engine.
@tfs2O3 72
It's amazing how long they have been out, and yet how few I see. That is always a plus. There is also no mistaking it when you see it, and that is another plus. Still looks and sounds great to me. I was recently asked what would be my first car if I won the lottery. I answered this car because 1) it is a bad ass car. And 2) I could pick one up today. It wouldn't be my only car, but a lot of the cars that come to mind, you have to hunt for, travel for, haggle for, etc. That's all part of the fun I guess, but something to be said about availability and servicing. There are dealers that can get you a Ferrari, Aston, Lambo, McLaren, etc., but you'll have to wait, and they may not know how to work on them. Not a problem with the R8. So yeah, this would be my first of many if that ticket comes through.
I'm amazed to find how much fun there is to be had in a little old Street Ka that cost me 400 quid and drives remarkably well. Any old bit of twisty road is just fine.
A well sorted lightweight vehicle is absolutely a great way to have fun even without a surplus of power.
I have a thing for the Echo/Yaris. Rented one to go on a 1200 km trip a few years back and it was pure awesome sauce.
It would be interesting to see if Audi would lend you another car now. I love the look of all the R8s, would love to try out an old manual.

Great honest review, at last someone saying it as they see it.👍🏼
I dunno, road trip through Europe to Sweden in a nice, fast and comfortable car that you can enjoy the autobahn in without having to zip tie the splitter back on. Hilarious radio comedy is also a plus.
Great item, i would go back to the 70s....route 66....roadrunner superbird....and Debbie Harry.
what a road trip, driving around at a blistering 60mph. id fall asleep and die, but you do you. route 66 is such a BAD road, id much rather take a mountain pass. if i have to drive in a straight line for hours on end, give me the autobahn or give me a rope....
Debbie Harry from the 70's, great call.
Ideal road trip:
- Best mate
- Lotus Exige or NSX R MK2
- Any 500 mile tour of the UK.
MY MAN! NSX-R NA2 👍👍👍👍
I had an original V8 R8 which I loved, I don't like the design of this one.... BTW love the fact you have a BMW badged shirt in the Audi R8 :-)
The original R8 is the one to have. The truly beautiful one. Every next generation looks like it's redesign was handed over to someone who completely doesn't understand the concept and form of the original car. Thus the absolutely depressing final result which is basically overgrown, uglier Audi TT. Thanks, but no, thanks.
@@dash3dot I remember when I first saw R8 here in Serbia back in '08, at that time most of the people were driving Yugo's and Punto's, having a new Golf was big thing, but someone bought V8 R8 and I thought it was a Bugatti Veyron when I saw it for the first time speeding through the streets lol
Actually it looks good rather have this than the old one
me too! what color was your R8 ?
Currently have the original (UR :-) R8 V8 2008 but considering upgrading to a 2016 V10 mainly for the S Tronic, slightly sharper styling and better sat nav. You have to want this car as the luggage space is poor, though you can get a good cabin bag in there and then a flat suit carrier on top, no probs. There is also handy space behind the rear seats. Its a great car when you spend time looking at the way its built (I replaced the magride with KW V3 suspension myself) and the engineering is nice. Just need the exhaust rumble to be deeper like my RS6 was...
Would love to get your take on the TT RS - half the engine half the fun?
i keep wishing they'd made it mid engined and call it the R4
@@chrisdavidson911 Same, but i think R5 would be more fitting
Stopping for gas is great because there's nothing to do but walk around and look at it and try hard not to make eye contact with anyone. so fun!

Nice. Consistent philosophy over 35 years (I know, how the heck did that happen?).
Driving a golf GTI with 300 horsepower/350torque is some of the most fun I’ve had on weekend twisty roads. Being able to go through the gears, and having more than enough streetable power is a recipe for a smile on your face.
I can’t speak to all of the supercars jay has driven in comparison, but it sure was a riot.
Thanks guys nice review....second hand price of the R8 will now skyrocket out of my pocket range!
My cousin sold his recently. According to my uncle, he sold it bc the parts prices were very high and it kept needing them.
The first few minutes are just epic in every way.
This is such a well made channel.
Thank you, JayEmm!
'Ideal' road trip? No restrictions, based on plausibility? Exige S2, converted to central driving position, carbon fibre everything (brakes, panels, wheels, seats, whatever), 543bhp Mezger 997 GT3 4.1l engine tuned by Sharkwerks. Isle of Man for no speed limits; Dolomites if my fantasy can also expunge those.
My ideal roadtrip would be a VW camper of some description, my car mates, a month off work and just tour the national park camp sites and the summer car shows of the UK, barbecues, car shows and beer for my mates (I don't drink).....I don't need supercars or abroad to be happy.
The fake top air intakes have always been an eyesore for me. It’s so noticeable. For interior, I’ve found the gen3 Audi TT interior more interesting looking, especially if you spec it with a tan leather or something other than black than an R8. The B&O system in the TT is similarly disappointing for the price by the way.
Agree with all of this. I also HATE the trend of fake exhaust notes, just a sad and cringeworthy bit of dishonesty.
I did 2 weeks around the Scottish coastline in an MX5 with a mate. Not one drop of rain. If I didn’t have photos I’d say I dreamt it. Nice BMW shirt in the Audi btw. :)
@axl rose Just a standard 1.6L 1990 NA. Pop up headlights rule. :)
For my honeymoon we did the NC500 in a VW camper , spent a week wild camping... weather was great, beaches are amazing... best holiday I’ve ever had 🤙
Nice looking car but I'd rather spend a bit extra on a lambo or a 911, the other thing the 5.2 direct injection engine will probably have lots of carbon build up problems on the inlet valves. Great review tho Jay as always 👍
Hope you enjoyed it up here, shame about the weather. Maybe the coupe wasn't so bad after all!
YESS.This is one great piece of a 'proper scientific automotive research'. Congratulations on a good job!
Just done a great road trip in my 991.2 GT3 to roads in and around Dumfries and Galloway. Brilliant. Good video by the way.
Thanks. 991.2 GT3 looks mega, never tried one but driven the .1
Great vid. I respect this car - it’s ability to be seen in an age when no ones looking makes me want to take my Jetta for a spin and smile 😊
That awkward moment when audi gives you a R8 to drive and you're driving a BMW shirt 😂
Color is soo important: Driving my black GT3 Touring i get lot's and lot's of grief and angry faces etc. I guess if it would be Vanilla Yellow the reactions could be a little different. ;-)
For a fun road trip you need a convertible. It makes going slow behind traffic tolerable.
I think the lines flow better on the pre face lift one
Ben ben Agreed. The more mature styling of the R8 has always been a big draw over the Huracan and I think that’s been lessened somewhat with the latest facelift.
Having done Scotland recently in an ateca and had fun, and the weather was beautiful as I passed that castle 😄, done it by bike too I'd like to do it in a well sorted hot hatch one day
Yeah good company, some good tunes and some good roads with great scenery.
Any suggestions in the UK in January?
@@greathey1234 Not so sure in January with weather likely to be wet and cold but there are some great driving roads in Wales and the Lake District some of them might be dicey if there is ice on the road at that time of the year.
@@maul_2184 thanks. I like the rain and snow and I took my precautions by hiring a four wheel drive Volvo.
What a great review James. Thanks so much for your take on this car. I also really appreciate the occasional philosophical debate on the car (or the supercar and how it fits in society. I also think a walk around of the accommodations you guys had would have been fun. Brilliant job!
I considered a walk around of the bus, but I wanted to make the video all about the car
Hi JayEmm love the channel.
Talking of road trips forgive me if you have done it but have you driven to German and blasted up the Autobahns?
Love to see you take one of your Ferrari's or a loaner supercar and hit 200mph. I'm quite sure it would be a very well viewed video and pay for itself in the long run.
Ferry to Holland - Germany - Denmark - Norway and back in my 2.7 986 with my wife...fantastic.
Anywhere and everywhere in either a Porsche Boxster GTS 981 or an Alpina D4 Biturbo F32 👍 I don't want a supercar on my roadtrip, too much worries about finding suitable parking spots.
A very professional review as always. You could easily have a tv show
Not with those socks.
Through the Alps on the way to my holiday home nr Venice. Yes we need supercars. What else is there to look at and strive for!
Epic roadtrip?
3 weeks, over 5000km from Southern France to the far North of Scotland wild camping. Four blokes in a VW T4 California. Total cost 1700€uros (four people, ferry crossing, all fuel and food, no accomodation cost apart from one night on a campsite). It was a blast...
And before anyone says but what about the car?
It might not be a supercar, but I can cook, eat, sleep and crap in mine 😉. Can you say the same? There's a fridge for the beers too 😁
Edit: great minds think alike for the destination
Fun fact about the Audi R8 that I suspect not many people know: the reason the Audi badge is on the bonnet and not in the grille like every other Audi (except the TT) is because it’s a throwback to the Auto Union Silberpfeil racing cars from the 1930s which had the badge over the grille aswell.
I agree with you that NO super car should be black. They all should have colour
Fave road trip? 1.The other half. 2.A big engined Mercedes SL from 70's/80's. 3. Across Europe then down to the southern tip of Italy, then hop, skip and jump from Sicily to Sardinia and then onto Corsica before taking the last ferry back to Genoa. From there, Monaco, Nice and Cannes before taking off up into the Alps and back to the UK :-)
Have done those roads (most of what you filmed looked to be the A835 north of Ullapool?) in a dark grey Quattroporte and have had similar fun and similar reactions from people in the area, and also in an older 996, but feel the ideal car for that journey would be a Ferrari Ff or GTC4lusso in a bright colour and a similar price to your recommendation R8 prefacelift
Looks like you're driving in Wester Ross north of Ullapool. Awesome roads and scenery for sure.
Like all "leaps forward" in tech, the real question is not can we, it is should we? Do we lose something? Most certainly. Do we gain ease control and ability? Obviously we do. Where is the true crux of elation?
Re-runs of "Who's the Boss" for me.
Drove one on a track day recently, was my favourite car of the day and I put down my best time in it.
We never 'needed' supercars. Sure back in the day, it was the only way to really go near race car performance on the road. Still, aside from that, people usually don't buy supercars for pure speed though that variable comes with a supercar. People mostly buy supercars due to the art, heritage, stye, quality a supercar offers. Good mentions of this would be a LaFerrari, Mclaren P1, Porsche 918, Lamborghini Miura, Mclaren F1 etc. Though people tune loads of cars such as the Toyota Supra, Lancer Evo etc (and us car guys really respect them) we never question a supercar when we see one on the streets. So there, that is why we never really necessarily needed supercars aside from back in the days for near race car performance. Peace. :D
Dont care about any negatives car is absolutely beautiful
As a Lotus fan, would love to know if you enjoyed the experience more in an R8 than you would have in your 400?
Lotus seems a bit cramped for a long distance road grip so i'd imagine still the r8
@@Will_M600 Although it's softer than a 400, my Evora I feel is almost perfect for long journeys.
The Lotus cars tend to excel for giving you driving pleasure without having to push the absolute limits. The Audi R8 cabin does look excellent though and looks to be a very nice place to be.
@@ephancock you must be shorter and less fat than me then i struggle to get in
The Evora would have been more fun in the twisty bits. Less fun on the long journey.
Nice BWM shirt! I'm sure Audi appreciated that one :-D
A tuned Panamera Turbo would be a proper choice for that trip. Allows the company of two couples and their luggage, while driving faster in more comfort. Nurburgring lap time is faster than that of the R8 v10. Mine has 560 wheel horsepower, 660 ft-lbs torque and is a great highway traveler, super comfortable on long stages for all 4 pax.
For a weekend of wife swapping.
For me woz a tr4 and then a TVR - the roof has to come off!! The Bristol had a 9 mpg problem!
Bmw want £1800 dpf filter for a 08 plate x6 3.0 td with 100 k on clock with out fitting god knows how much to fit it ,?? Dont need to be that price,,,!
DPF delete with eco remap, cheaper
Not sure about the UK but some countries only perform a visual inspection on the DPF so you could get it removed for much less? Investigate to see if you can as it gives greater mpg and greater power.
Avoid BMW main dealers. They arnt worth the money .
You should go down the removal route mate, costs alot less and has lots of benifits + added power
Diesels are a piece of shit. Scrap it and get a real motor.
I keep hearing about these particulate filters but cant you just get them removed? probably need to keep it when you sell it but doesnt seem like a big deal
I'm sorry I think you're wrong, A great road trip does need 3 things but it's not the destination that matters but the journey.
NZ, top to bottom with ooh, Jodi Kidd and Buy Martin. In a big Mercedes.
Guy...
Any car,any road with Harry Metcalf as my passenger, would be ideal for me.
As an Australian there's pretty much no such thing as an interesting destination even remotely close to you, regardless of where you live. My ideal road trip is Adelaide to Sydney, plenty of long open stretches of road ;) gets you away from the parents. Line up a playlist of car karaoke and bring enough mates to rotate driving.
Front bias sound system, that a good thing, you don't go to a concert and expect surround sound..
Except sound does reverberate around the concert hall
The R8 sounds as if you got a similar mpg as my Astra GTC VXR (2.0L Turbo std) would mid -high 20's depending on the right foot! Great vid, lovin your channel thx.
My first choice for £100k would of been a 911 - but reality this is a better proposition. Another fab video.
Am I right in thinking these are like modern Bugatti eb110s? But.. maybe less top speed but better things in other places?
Jay’s the type of guy to road trip an Audi in a Beamer shirt.
Drove an older Auto model of these on a track. As fast and easy as it was to drive, my god was the steering numb and just boring to drive. I'd rather drive my Integra on these roads any day of the week! You're much closer to the limits of the car than a supercar and get much more feedback and enjoyment out of it too. Do we need supercars? The answer is no.
Has anyone done a modification to fix this problem?
need? no, never have
want? yes
Let's go best roqd trip windy roads good music and friends.
Oh dear, a BMW shirt in an Audi 🙈….. The Scottish roads are a blast though, great video 👍
I'm late to this one, but my ideal road-trip: Tesla Roadster, full island circuit of Taiwan along the coast-roads, with my girlfriend. Or... if you MUST make me choose an ICE, either the BMW i8, or a Aston Martin superleggera (maybe the i8 roadster or the volante if driving in Winter, when the Taiwanese climate is simply perfect for human life to flourish).
I like the looks of the old R8 for looks
I know it’s a small thing, but fake vents always bug me endlessly. I’d rather just have the contours be cleaner if there’s not going to be a function to what looks like an intake.
I know the car was not good but nice you had a trip away with your boyfriend.
X2 point 1 ) come to gods county YORKSHIRE you wont be disappointed
2) that needs a larini system on it that will make it SING FROM THE HILLS 🤪🤪🤪😎😎😎😎👍👍💪
My dream is to drive through the Alps to various ski resorts along the way in something like an FF or an RS6 something like that. If I win the lottery I'll be sodding work off and doing that. We can all dream
I thought it would have been nice if you had dried the door card you had allowed to get wet., Tearing the ribbons out of a piece of art was really thoughtful of you.. GN
Helsinki to Heraklion in a Forester XT with a GT3076R kit. Epic!
Fantastic video James, properly epic intro 👌
That's a respectable amount of storage for that car.
Original Fiat 500 across Italy or NA MX5 across Wales. With my wife for both, of course!
Or... Caterham across the highlands (on my own this time so I can fit a tent in the passenger seat and go sideways a lot).
Really loving your videos keep up the good work man.
How about a early and current Audi TT comparison test...would love that JayEmm
Cool cars in general should have nicecolors tbh. At least colors that accentuate the lines and shapes.. I'll never understand people who buy an exciting/beautiful car but then decide to let it down with the color.
Madlad reviewing an Audi in a BMW shirt
Ideal road trip? I am planning it: A week and a bit drive through most of the Scottish Highlands, Isle of Skye and the Outer Hebrides in my Toyota MR2 SW20. Totally bad car to spend a long time in and lug a lot of stuff around, but sure as hell a lot of fun to drive on Highlands Roads.
Oh, and just one close friends cause two seater car problems.
I think the SW20 is actually a really underrated GT car
Best review you’ve done this far 👍
I for one do not need a supercar, I "want" a few 😁
It's ok, but on those roads only one car will do, Aston DB5, with optional extras
C'mon Jay...you mean you didn't have your assistant get up before breakfast and leather off the car while it was wet like all us car trip guys do :-) Cannot believe Audi didnt give you a proper Audi Sport shirt too...that BM shirt would have been totally verboten in Germany!
Not good destination, but good road to the destination.
Another great review Jay. I like the detail you put into each review but think it odd that with your attention to details you chose to wear a BMW shirt......
In answer to your question, leaving the house early on a Sunday morning for a B road blast in a reasonably powered car and hooking it up for fast smooth progress between the corners
Enjoyed the video as always but you hammered McLaren for depreciation and haven't said a word about how these drop like stones. 2013 V8 for the less money than a 981 GTS.
Apart from that bit at the end where I mention how a nearly new example is far less money
Ferrari California in Italian Alps would be my choice. With some mates of course.
the right car, no f wit drivers on the road and decent music
Very cool car despite the options... I have a R8 or a 911 or a AMG GT on my list for the future... (current '15 Mercedes SLK55 AMG and '98 Jeep Wrangler for summer cars).
The new 2020 GT500 I think is a better, more practical vehicle than this. 760HP, legitimately shockingly good handling and braking, better sound, full factory warranty that can be extended to 10 years/100k miles, brilliant vehicle all around. Even comes with carbon fiber wheels and enormous 6-piston brembos for $74k.
You're still wrong about the E46 m3.
I’d get some friends together and go to Deal’s Gap for the Tail of the Dragon.
Maybe I would do a driving trip down Ohio 800.
Perhaps a trip down Skyline Drive.
"Full of whiskey and porridge"... LOL Keep up the good work and I'm amazing you don't have more subscribers.
Was that the Monty Python castle?
Great review. Thank you.
You'll have to wear an Audi shirt in the next new BMW review..............
Shame we didnt see you in your Evora in Scotland, we live in hope for a Lotus review in the twisties up there (hint)...
EZ E haha you picked up on that too. Bit cheeky
