I feel like Lucas is also a pretty interesting note. He was supposed to replace Ness in Melee, but got cut because his game was canceled. Yet not only did Lucas's game get a second chance, but so did his chance to join Smash.

@@user-fe8gx3ie5v Ridley is a hight risk, hight reward character, he has great speed, good spacing, and a nice projectile. However Ridley can't take damage like the other heavy weights. Ridley's skewer might be useful in Double battles, but it might be too hard to land on a one to one Match, unless its characters like Bowser where their attack has so much end lag that it leave them open.
I'm honestly glad that they gave up "rules" entirely, I bet if K. Rool, Ridley, and Richter weren't in, then Smash ultimate would have sold a lot less copies.

The problem with that is that the "Ridley is too big" meme is a massive oversimplification of what Sakurai actually said. It was more that Ridley's overall abilities would've made him incredibly overpowered for Smash, and if he was nerfed to the point that he actually would fit properly, then he wouldn't really be Ridley anymore. Given how his Smash-self actually works, I'd say he was 100% correct; it seems like he just decided that making Ridley playable was more important than making him fully accurate (which I don't at all blame him for, mind you).
@@dustinrausch5008 They undertuned Ridley - he could've easily been a fair bit more powerful without being broken. At least give him more midair jumps. And what Sakurai said didn't stop him from adding Bowser and making him smaller and terrible, or Ganondorf.
The best choices for a rhythm heaven rep would be Chorus Kids or Karate Joe. But both characters don't have alot of moves to be inspired into Smash. So maybe the character could be Joe, The Kids, or *all of them* (not individually). Maybe working like G&W, they would morph into different characters (specifically different rhythm heaven characters) for different attacks.

umm what? ridley: - appears in the background of the metroid stage in SSB64 - is in the opening movie for melee - is a fightable boss in both Brawl and Sm4sh and since Smash for Wii-U and 3DS were technically the same game it counts
Ridley is a character I’ve always wanted but knew there was no way he’d ever make it. When I saw the reveal from him I checked the video to see that I wasn’t watching a trailer for a mod or joke. I was in disbelief but was extremely excited because I’m in love with the Metroid series. I’ve gotten 100% on every last Metroid game. I’ve also beaten Super Metroid 16 times (I didn’t make the number up I literally did it exactly 16 times) I’m almost done doing a no-damage run on it using restore points. I’d create a restore point at save stations and when I get a major item required for progression. Like Speed Booster. I’d also do it for the 1st Missle tank or Super Missile tank etc. Also at boss doors. Honestly the hardest part in my opinion was the beginning at Ceres Station (the tutorial) If you haven’t played it I’m not joking.
My personal favorite Smash character, Pichu, was originally not meant to be included in Melee. The original Gold/Silver representative was to be a Pokémon Trainer who commanded the Johto starters. However, since Pichu was promoted as the mascot of Gold/Silver, Sakurai considered including Pichu instead, but quickly dismissed the idea due to it being too similar to Pikachu. But when Sakurai began thinking of Pichu again, it inspired him to implement clone characters, and Pichu was ultimately chosen as the Gold/Silver representative in Melee. I’m very glad this happened, as Pichu is a very unique fighter with its self-damage gimmick topped with its light weight, which makes for a challenging character that requires much care and strategy to succeed with. Learning how to balance your use of the recoil attacks alongside the non-recoil ones is very fun. This may sound biased, but I think including Pichu over a Johto Pokémon Trainer was the better choice, and Pichu feels right at home in Smash (this is mostly due to Pichu being my favorite Pokémon).

Fire Emblem getting 4 fighters in one game is like if F-Zero got the same? One is much more popular than the other, and no F-Zero characters, not even Captain Falcon, make sense in Smash at all. Just because Americans on the internet think Fire Emblem is overrepresented in Smash doesn't mean it's true, and doesn't warrant a comparison to a franchise that is entirely dead.
As of yesterday it’s been 1 year since he was added. He feels both like an impossible inclusion and right at home with Ness and Lucas. He’s both an iconic character from an iconic game and a living meme. And Megalovania being in Smash as a new remix... truly a wonderful timeline.
I really like Sakurai's philosophy on fighters; fun over notoriety. That's the main reason I'm against Master Chief for Smash. Sure, he is probably the most iconic character for Xbox, but will he be fun? He has gun, small gun, big gun, close gun, far gun, and *spirrrrrr* gun. I know that there's a little more, but that's what the moveset would boil down to. Same goes for Doom Guy except he would be worse since he wouldn't be able to be gruesome like he was intended to be.

Unpopular Opinion but I like FE in Smash. I feel like Marth, Ike, Robin, Corrin, and Byleth play unique and Lucina, Roy, and Chrom are fun and help bump up the character count. Thanks to Corrin in Smash 4 I actually bought Fates because prior to that I had never even played an RPG outside of Mario and Luigi: Dream Team. I love Fire Emblem and think it's a great series. There are a bunch of FE characters but it kinda makes sense. Fire Emblem is a game all about characters. Appart from direct sequals or some characters moving between contanents, all FE games have completely unique rosters of characters. And I think a lot of them would work well in Smash. I don't even think people hate FE in Smash, they hate Sword FE in Smash. All FE characters in Smash use a sword, mainly because most main characters use swords in FE. But when it comes to Robin, Corrin, and Byleth who actually use other FE weapons I think those characters should be added. I know it's a hot topic about FE in Smash but I don't get why. The roster count goes up, new characters to play as are included, and even if you despise FE you don't have to play as them. Just choose from the other 70 characters in the game. I know people say 'they steal spots' but most of the FE characters are Echos or Semi-Clones anyway, less development time goes into them. I know someone will argue with me and I hope so. I want to understand your opinion too. Just please don't be so mean.
i'm a huge FE fan so i love the additions. and even if you look at the numbers, FE doesn't have that much *overall* rep (including stages, music, spirits, etc. not just fighters), and there aren't even that many *traditional* swordfighters. most characters who use a sword have other weapons or magic or smth. fans who don't like FE just wanna be mad and i don't get it bc there are a _lot_ of characters i don't care for or even like, but you don't see me complaining :/
@moxxi to the max Yep. It does make sense that Mario and Pokèmon are the most represented in Smash with all the fighters, stages, spirits, and whatnot. But nobody complains when Incinaroar or Piranha Plant were the last base roster / first DLC character. It is true that FE has the most Echos and Simi-Clones in the roster but so what? That's more characters to play as. Robin, Corrin, and Byleth don't even use only swords. Marth and Ike are different enough and sure Roy, Lucina, and Chrom are similar to other characters but there are so many other Echos and Semi-Clones. All the Star Fox characters are based of Fox, Pichu is similar to Pikachu (yeah obviously but still), Mario has Dr. Mario and you could argue Luigi has the same basic build... Kinda. There are 3 Links who play similarly, and Villager has Isabelle. Yeah FE has the most Echos and Semi-Clones but so what? That just means there are more characters in my favorite video game.

Regular Link has Remote Bombs, all of there down airs are slightly different, Toon Link has a different forward smash, and Toon Link's projectiles are floatier. From what I can tell these are the current Smash bros character rules. 1. Must originate from a videogame 2. Must be in a past, current, or upcoming game on a Nintendo system. For anyone who wants to talk about Joker please see Persona q2 for 3ds. For those who think this disproves Dante please see DMC 1-3 on switch or more importantly, the Project X Zone games for the 3ds.
Same can be said about Pyra/Mythra, they weren't supposed to be a fighter in the game but Nintendo wanted to promote Xenoblade Chronicles 2, so they added them in there.
I seem to recall that the only absolutely hard and fast rule Sakurai has addressed himself is that the character MUST originate from a video game. ...which was already broken with R.O.B. because he's a peripheral and not a game character. That doesn't hold the door open very wide but it does mean that mascot characters like Captain N and Segata Sanshiro could *hypothetically* get in.
Captain N isn't happening, weirdly even though he exists to basically promote Nintendo products, he isn't owned buy Nintendo. Or at least he didn't last time I checked

Little Mac was an assist trophy in Brawl, and then Isabelle and Dark Samus were upgraded too for Ultimate, but people think it is a rule since not a single assist trophy has become a playable character in the same game, and having Min Min instead of Spring Man kinda proves it.

Besides ARMS is a fighting game franchise so every character is pretty equivalent. This isn't like Mario vs Waluigi who have too many differences in roles and participation. I think the precise question should be whether they're really not supposed to be, or it's the rules that are not supposed to exist. If it's the latter, then we should be glad to see that Nintendo admit they're wrong. But if it's the former, that means Nintendo chose the wrong fighters, and we should complain that Nintendo should had chosen other fighters. If you cannot precisely tell which situation it is, then I cannot see the point.

ness was going to be cut from melee and replaced with lucas. at the time mother 3 was being created but ended up getting cancelled, resulting in lucas being cut. the game did come out several years later for the GBA, and lucas was (obviously) added to brawl after that.
I know a lot of people don't like having so many fire emblem characters, but I actually like playing as most of them. No, I haven't played a fire emblem game, but I just love fantasy things in general, and I usually love using swords more than any other melee weapon in any fantasy game I have played, (I also love bows and magic). :) I would absolutely LOVE to be able to play as Midna, preferably her true form, unless you could switch between that and her imp form.
I find it funny how most people who played Smash has never played a FE game yet STILL. Honestly the FE games are pretty good. It feels intimidating at first with the stategic turn based gameplay but its extremly satisfying to beat a extremly difficult chapter and not lose any units/characters. FE Fates despite being considered one of the worst games in the series has probably some of the best map layouts and difficulty spikes in the series. The biggest problem was the storytelling, unnecessary children units, and the bland character personalities. Gameplay was excellent but story was garbage basically. If you ever want to pick up one of the games some day than I recommend FE Echoes:Shadows of Valentia (Guiden remake/2nd game in the series), FE Awakening and FE 3 Houses.
Forget about any TF2 rep or Halo. No games on demand, demand zero except for memes and pretty irrelevant on Japan. Also Microsoft have 0 interest on having more partnership with Nintendo and vice versa Doom on other hand... Have one of the best chances actually
We live in a society where we have 8 fire emblem characters, with at least one being added every new Smash game. And F Zero has had only one playable character for over 20 years

Hero was as well but there are many examples. Min Min was definitely there to represent a newer game franchise that Nintendo wants to grow, along with being a unique idea

I've never been one to hate on the Fire Emblem characters and I never rlly got salty or disappointed by their inclusion, keep in mind that i have never played a Fire Emblem game, but when they announced DLC was coming for Ultimate I was 100% sure Byleth was coming at some point, and from all the Fire Emblem characters Byleth and Corrin are the ones I like the most. If Corrin wasnt included in Smash4 they wouldn't be one of my mains today.
the Reason for fate's sloppy story, is because the writers where trying to achieve too much with not enough time. Intelligents Systems had an idea for Fate to have three stories to appeal to everyone, but they realized that they didn't have enough writers. So they hired an outside writer, Shin Kibayashi was that writer. Nintendo wanted Shin to write the outline for each pathway, what happened instead is that Shin wrote 500 pages for each pathway. Nintendo knew this was too long so they cut the story into pieces without the writers permission and the fact the Nintendo demanded Fates come on the Fire Emblem Anniversary only made things worse. Which resulted in this hilariously mess of a story. The good news this that there is a manga based on Fates that is a little better. Its called Fire Emblem If: the Crown of Niberlung.
Byleth wasn't welcomed mostly cause the game had too many characters from same franchsie at this point. If they keep Byleth for next Smash fans of other games can be less offended.
Don't quote me on this but I'm 99% sure that Jigglypuff wasn't originally supposed to get into smash, due to time constraints they decided to copy kirbys model and make Jigglypuff from that copy.

A lot of the “rules” were initially speculation, but eventually were taken way out of hand.
Ridley is a character I’ve always wanted but knew there was no way he’d ever make it.
When I saw the reveal from him I checked the video to see that I wasn’t watching a trailer for a mod or joke.
I was in disbelief but was extremely excited because I’m in love with the Metroid series. I’ve gotten 100% on every last Metroid game. I’ve also beaten Super Metroid 16 times (I didn’t make the number up I literally did it exactly 16 times)
I’m almost done doing a no-damage run on it using restore points. I’d create a restore point at save stations and when I get a major item required for progression. Like Speed Booster. I’d also do it for the 1st Missle tank or Super Missile tank etc. Also at boss doors.
Honestly the hardest part in my opinion was the beginning at Ceres Station (the tutorial)

My personal favorite Smash character, Pichu, was originally not meant to be included in Melee. The original Gold/Silver representative was to be a Pokémon Trainer who commanded the Johto starters. However, since Pichu was promoted as the mascot of Gold/Silver, Sakurai considered including Pichu instead, but quickly dismissed the idea due to it being too similar to Pikachu. But when Sakurai began thinking of Pichu again, it inspired him to implement clone characters, and Pichu was ultimately chosen as the Gold/Silver representative in Melee.
I’m very glad this happened, as Pichu is a very unique fighter with its self-damage gimmick topped with its light weight, which makes for a challenging character that requires much care and strategy to succeed with. Learning how to balance your use of the recoil attacks alongside the non-recoil ones is very fun. This may sound biased, but I think including Pichu over a Johto Pokémon Trainer was the better choice, and Pichu feels right at home in Smash (this is mostly due to Pichu being my favorite Pokémon).

Fire Emblem getting 4 fighters in one game is like if F-Zero got the same? One is much more popular than the other, and no F-Zero characters, not even Captain Falcon, make sense in Smash at all. Just because Americans on the internet think Fire Emblem is overrepresented in Smash doesn't mean it's true, and doesn't warrant a comparison to a franchise that is entirely dead.

I really like Sakurai's philosophy on fighters; fun over notoriety. That's the main reason I'm against Master Chief for Smash. Sure, he is probably the most iconic character for Xbox, but will he be fun? He has gun, small gun, big gun, close gun, far gun, and *spirrrrrr* gun. I know that there's a little more, but that's what the moveset would boil down to. Same goes for Doom Guy except he would be worse since he wouldn't be able to be gruesome like he was intended to be.

Unpopular Opinion but I like FE in Smash. I feel like Marth, Ike, Robin, Corrin, and Byleth play unique and Lucina, Roy, and Chrom are fun and help bump up the character count. Thanks to Corrin in Smash 4 I actually bought Fates because prior to that I had never even played an RPG outside of Mario and Luigi: Dream Team. I love Fire Emblem and think it's a great series. There are a bunch of FE characters but it kinda makes sense. Fire Emblem is a game all about characters. Appart from direct sequals or some characters moving between contanents, all FE games have completely unique rosters of characters. And I think a lot of them would work well in Smash. I don't even think people hate FE in Smash, they hate Sword FE in Smash. All FE characters in Smash use a sword, mainly because most main characters use swords in FE. But when it comes to Robin, Corrin, and Byleth who actually use other FE weapons I think those characters should be added. I know it's a hot topic about FE in Smash but I don't get why. The roster count goes up, new characters to play as are included, and even if you despise FE you don't have to play as them. Just choose from the other 70 characters in the game. I know people say 'they steal spots' but most of the FE characters are Echos or Semi-Clones anyway, less development time goes into them. I know someone will argue with me and I hope so. I want to understand your opinion too. Just please don't be so mean.

i'm a huge FE fan so i love the additions. and even if you look at the numbers, FE doesn't have that much *overall* rep (including stages, music, spirits, etc. not just fighters), and there aren't even that many *traditional* swordfighters. most characters who use a sword have other weapons or magic or smth. fans who don't like FE just wanna be mad and i don't get it bc there are a _lot_ of characters i don't care for or even like, but you don't see me complaining :/
@moxxi to the max Yep. It does make sense that Mario and Pokèmon are the most represented in Smash with all the fighters, stages, spirits, and whatnot. But nobody complains when Incinaroar or Piranha Plant were the last base roster / first DLC character. It is true that FE has the most Echos and Simi-Clones in the roster but so what? That's more characters to play as. Robin, Corrin, and Byleth don't even use only swords. Marth and Ike are different enough and sure Roy, Lucina, and Chrom are similar to other characters but there are so many other Echos and Semi-Clones. All the Star Fox characters are based of Fox, Pichu is similar to Pikachu (yeah obviously but still), Mario has Dr. Mario and you could argue Luigi has the same basic build... Kinda. There are 3 Links who play similarly, and Villager has Isabelle. Yeah FE has the most Echos and Semi-Clones but so what? That just means there are more characters in my favorite video game.

Regular Link has Remote Bombs, all of there down airs are slightly different, Toon Link has a different forward smash, and Toon Link's projectiles are floatier. And they all have different weights and speeds. I just wish people would stop complaining about the roster. It's the biggest roster ever anyway, what's to hate?

I seem to recall that the only absolutely hard and fast rule Sakurai has addressed himself is that the character MUST originate from a video game.
...which was already broken with R.O.B. because he's a peripheral and not a game character. That doesn't hold the door open very wide but it does mean that mascot characters like Captain N and Segata Sanshiro could *hypothetically* get in.
Captain N isn't happening, weirdly even though he exists to basically promote Nintendo products, he isn't owned buy Nintendo.

Little Mac was an assist trophy in Brawl, and then Isabelle and Dark Samus were upgraded too for Ultimate, but people think it is a rule since not a single assist trophy has become a playable character in the same game, and having Min Min instead of Spring Man kinda proves it.

Besides ARMS is a fighting game franchise so every character is pretty equivalent. This isn't like Mario vs Waluigi who have too many differences in roles and participation. Both Spring Man and Min Min are the Mario to their game.
I think the precise question should be whether they're really not supposed to be, or it's the rules that are not supposed to exist.
If it's the latter, then we should be glad to see that Nintendo admit they're wrong.
But if it's the former, that means Nintendo chose the wrong fighters, and we should complain that Nintendo should had chosen other fighters.
If you cannot precisely tell which situation it is, then I cannot see the point.

@@DoctorFlux Lucario basically plays like Goku in his games. The whole aura mechanic making him stronger, aura sphere is like a Ki blast, counter is a teleport hit, even his final smash he turns mega and does a massive energy beam just like as if he went super Sayian and did a Kamehameha.

ness was going to be cut from melee and replaced with lucas. at the time mother 3 was being created but ended up getting cancelled, resulting in lucas being cut. the game did come out several years later for the GBA, and lucas was (obviously) added to brawl after that.
I know a lot of people don't like having so many fire emblem characters, but I actually like playing as most of them. No, I haven't played a fire emblem game, but I just love fantasy things in general, and I usually love using swords more than any other melee weapon in any fantasy game I have played, (I also love bows and magic). :)
I would absolutely LOVE to be able to play as Midna, preferably her true form, unless you could switch between that and her imp form.
I find it funny how most people who played Smash has never played a FE game yet STILL. Honestly the FE games are pretty good. It feels intimidating at first with the stategic turn based gameplay but its extremly satisfying to beat a extremly difficult chapter and not lose any units/characters. FE Fates despite being considered one of the worst games in the series has probably some of the best map layouts and difficulty spikes in the series. The biggest problem was the storytelling, unnecessary children units, and the bland character personalities. Gameplay was excellent but story was garbage basically. If you ever want to pick up one of the games some day than I recommend FE Echoes:Shadows of Valentia (Guiden remake/2nd game in the series), FE Awakening and FE 3 Houses.

Brawl was the first game to introduce third party characters in the game. I personally don't think Sakurai had permission for it at that time.

I've never been one to hate on the Fire Emblem characters and I never rlly got salty or disappointed by their inclusion, keep in mind that i have never played a Fire Emblem game, but when they announced DLC was coming for Ultimate I was 100% sure Byleth was coming at some point, and from all the Fire Emblem characters Byleth and Corrin are the ones I like the most. If Corrin wasnt included in Smash4 they wouldn't be one of my mains today.
the Reason for fate's sloppy story, is because the writers where trying to achieve too much with not enough time. Intelligents Systems had an idea for Fate to have three stories to appeal to everyone, but they realized that they didn't have enough writers. So they hired an outside writer, Shin Kibayashi was that writer. Nintendo wanted Shin to write the outline for each pathway, what happened instead is that Shin wrote 500 pages for each pathway. Nintendo knew this was too long so they cut the story into pieces without the writers permission and the fact the Nintendo demanded Fates come on the Fire Emblem Anniversary only made things worse. Which resulted in this hilariously mess of a story. The good news this that there is a manga based on Fates that is a little better. Its called Fire Emblem If: the Crown of Niberlung.
Byleth wasn't welcomed mostly cause the game had too many characters from same franchsie at this point. If they keep Byleth for next Smash fans of other games can be less offended.
