Just absolutely beautiful work, sir. JUST gorgeous! You've inspired some deep thought into some handles for the knives I'm smithin'. ....I admire your attention to seemingly insignificant detail, that really makes it 'pop'. Outstanding!
I’m actually liking the weave before the individual fibers/lines are added... it looks like Celtic laces or something, I’m thinking about doing that on mine and stopping there for the finished look. Awesome technique!
Superb ! I've built a few stocks myself, but nowhere near your level. Could you have used a 2 cut chequering tool to make the small lines in the weave ?
Hi and thanks, yes If I had one I would have no doubt used it for that, you can literally use any kind of tool to achieve the work you want to do, but I only use rotary tools for stippling etc sharp cutting tools give you a much cleaner finish than a rotary burr. The cleanest finishes are not sanded after carving but being a gunstock any sharp edges will end up being chipped and have pieces breaking off in no time. Cheers.
Amazing absolutely amazing sir I really can't believe that there is someone who gave you a thumbs down i feel like someone owe you an apology I'm sorry you got any some people just don't know a true artist these days
Well... when it comes to wood, you've proven yourself to be a master at using it for constructing elaborate bird 'sanctuaries'... a master at finding the most efficient ways to burn it (including from its sawdust)... and now, a master at decorative carving on it. So... what's next? I suspect it might be "How to build your own livable log cabin from toothpicks that are salvaged from your local pub"! I believe it goes without saying that, you my friend, have an impressive talent when it comes to working with wood... on 'any and all' levels!
I've done some great basket weave with no tools other than a heavy duty X-acto knife. I very much prefer the feel of basket weave over traditional checkering on field guns. I've been doing it on everything from bed frames to what not shelves to guns since I was a kid. Rarely did it professionally because I just couldn't find anyone who would pay enough for it to make it worth my time.
i dond know why but the ornaments remember me of greek mythology. You could add maybe another element like the head or head+torso of an animal or mythological figure on the front
I have to agree with Jose.. You sir are wonderfully talented and your humble manner simply magnifies your talent.. My question to you sir is, something as astoundingly elaborate as this gun stock sells for how much?
Thanks Joseph, I didnt keep track of the time i spent making the stock, I let a friend have it for £250 I think I couldnt make another one for that price to sell though.
+David Hasselboff Thanks David, I used CCL gunstock oil on this but you can use TRU oil which is similar and a bit cheaper the ccl gives a nicer matt finish in my opinion, the tool is a hand held rotary drive with a flexible shaft from axminster tools dremel and others do the same kind of thing, the burrs can be got from anywhere this one was a cheap set of diamond burrs from ebay. Cheers.
Bloody amazing skill you have there, ive just had a go at stippling a hatsan with a dremel. Did i say stippling, a blind man with a angle grinder would have done a better job. At least it's unique to me!!
ifell3 Thanks mate, its a bit like everything the more you do the better you get, i usually have a practice on a scrap piece of timber if im not sure of the results.
+Jose Lacera Thanks Jose, Im no master though there was a time when i was really good at carving but its all down to time on the tools and using them, not using them for a few years you forget alot of things and make silly mistakes.
You could well, write a book on this subject... But ''printed'' on CDs... !I'd buy one!! Would you please show us some wood custom made wood gun grips ?? 'd love that too!! 1000 thanks!!
+Daryl Wilson The basket weave does not take too long once you get into the swing of it, and alot of the time spent on this stock was spent figuring out the designs and how they work together. but yes there was over a weeks work probably and another week just sketching and working on the design so more in the hundreds than thousands.
+ppotty1 hi mate nice work as allways iff you can would you plz add me on fb so I can have a chat with you just surch jamie sawdon and my profile picture is of me and my mate with 20 as we had just been ferreting cheers mate
+aaronmpeters26 Thank you. I could carve rifle stocks you are allowed to own a rimfire rifle or shotgun with a licence, I guess i would have to move in the gun circles but its not something i want to do full time.
ppotty1 I just don't understand. I love these channels like yours where we see inside somebody's work shop. Anyway, I hope you keep sharing and ignore the haters.
This is one of the most beautiful rifle stocks I've ever seen. Bravo.
Thank you .
Looks incredible You are a true craftsman. Well done! From New Zealand.
Thank you very much!
I hope that stock brings you at LEAST $5,000 my friend. That is truly something indeed.
Just absolutely beautiful work, sir. JUST gorgeous! You've inspired some deep thought into some handles for the knives I'm smithin'. ....I admire your attention to seemingly insignificant detail, that really makes it 'pop'. Outstanding!
+D. Marcus Calvert Thank you sometimes the devil is in the detail and i found with woodcarving the small tedious details make a big difference.
Exceptional work. Well done.
Many thanks mate!
Really love your work, made an ordinary stock into a beautiful work of art.
I quite enjoyed this. I've now been thinking how I might use that myself. The sanding really made all the difference. It is worthwhile doing. Thanks
Jim Campbell Cheers Jim, Have a go mate plenty of patience needed though.

Skill and patience my friend, neither of them I possess.
I’m actually liking the weave before the individual fibers/lines are added... it looks like Celtic laces or something, I’m thinking about doing that on mine and stopping there for the finished look. Awesome technique!
thank you
@@LozHarrop I chickened out haha... just going to stain the stock and be done with it. I'll practice on some junk wood until I get the hang of it.

Nice of you to say Steven, Thanks.

Richard Workman Thanks Richard Ive been keen on woodworking since I was a kid but didnt know I could carve until I tried it a few years ago. Cheers.

Thats the problem Lawrence, it does look and feel fantastic but not many people are willing to pay for the work involved.
I admire your skill very much...and there isn't much I admire.
Thanks David, appreciate that
David Rivera
I know I'm late to the party. Just wanted to say I think your work is fantastic!
Thanks Jason.
i dond know why but the ornaments remember me of greek mythology.
You could add maybe another element like the head or head+torso of an animal or mythological figure on the front
This is basically a celtic knot pattern just without the outer connecting bends to it.
that takes patients.really nice.
Love the work. I love woodworking/carving myself, but I don't have the skill or the patience to do anything near what you can do.
Awsome! Beautiful job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful work! I wish I had found this earlier.
Your an excellent teacher mate should be a lecturer on carving!

Trabalho muito bonito, parabéns.
How many hours you have in that? If you do that as a profession a stock like that would cost thousands would it not?
+Daryl Wilson The basket weave does not take too long once you get into the swing of it, and alot of the time spent on this stock was spent figuring out the designs and how they work together. but yes there was over a weeks work probably and another week just sketching and working on the design so more in the hundreds than thousands.

The Birdy
ROBERT AITKEN Thanks, about a third of the way into the next workshop stove build.
