Creating Rocks and Grass for my Game in Unity! [episode 3]

  • In this video I make a bunch of rocks and some grass for my open world survival game!
    I first start off the video by explaining some of my ideas of the game including the setting. Next I make some textures for the terrain. I then go through the process of making a rock for my game. I did this 11 more time to get a bunch of rocks. This process isn't just for rocks. It is used pretty much for making any kind of 3d model, but I decided to share it because this is the first real model I've made for the game. After I finished all the rocks, I went on to creating grass. I first talked about how grass is made and then did it. I also talked about my struggles with getting it to work properly.
    When I first started this project I knew it was an ambitious one. I had wanted to do something like this for a while now and was really excited. As a result, I jumped in to it with a lot less planning than I should have. I always thought I can just scale the project back if it gets out of hand and way bigger than I can handle. At the stage I'm at, scaling the project back would basically have me start over, and do a ton more planning. And even after I planned out a smaller more manageable version, an open world survival game is too much for a beginner like myself. So I'm going to take a break from developing this game, and the series. I do not regret the time I've spent on this project. The whole month of June made me so much better at programming and July and August improved my problem solving abilities with the terrain and grass.
    Don't worry, this will not be the last time you'll see me, because I'm going to start a new project, but this time with proper planning and a reasonable idea! I already have a fun interesting concept in my mind and I'm going to start working on it very shortly. And Yes, I will be making video's on that as well.
    After I got the whole video filmed and edited, I found out about a stage in the game development process called pre-production. During pre-production, lots of planning is done. On top of that a prototype of the core mechanic is made. So with the open world survival game, I kinda just skipped this stage completely. With the next game I am not going to just skip over pre-production because someone once said failing to prepare is preparing to fail.
