I improved a 1500 year old game in one weekend - the making of Chaotic Chess - 2023 GMTK Game Jam

  • In this video, I improved the classic game, Chess. I was also participating in the 2023 GMTK game jam, so I only have 48 hours. Is it even possible? (yes it is, that's why I made the video)
    Play Chaotic Chess: will-hess.itch...
    IMPORTANT INFORMATION: you have to be on a computer to play the game, sorry mobile friends!
    Chess has many flaws but the biggest one is that it relies 100% on your wits. If you play smarter, you win. It’s as simple as that. This fact creates situations where you can really only play against people who have very similar skill levels to you, because if they’re too good, you just lose every time, and if they suck, you aren’t challenged at all.
    My improved version of chess, Chaotic Chess, fixes this problem with Chess by introducing a new element into chess, randomness. The roles of each piece swap which makes Chaotic Chess starts off as a very familiar experience. The knights move in L's, the bishops move in x's, and the queens are blatantly the best piece in the game. Shortly after playing, the game descends into madness when the roles of the pieces reverse causing them to behave like others. Remember that overpowered queen, well now she's just a pawn. Remember that bishop, well now he moves like a rook. And all those pawns, well now they're queens...
    The GMTK 2023 game jam was a lot of fun, and my submission to the 2023 GMTK game jam, Chaotic Chess, was made with the unity game engine. The Game Jam had me make a video game in only 48 hours. This means I only have one weekend to make a video game. You could say that Chaotic Chess is Chess 2, but it isn't. Many people like chess, so they should co-exist as separate games.

    Removing a core concept of an ancient yet still well working game and turning it into a whole experience despite the roughly similar mechanics sounds like a stupid idea on paper, but I think you've succeeded in what you wanted to do. I mean, turning out a clever and slowly paced strategy game into an RNG crap show is hilarious and yet it somehow ended up working out! Also all the interactions with you and the ''average commenter who'd try to defend chess from you'' was really great and funny as well. Overall, I felt like you did chess dirty with most of your comments, but those bits really balanced the vibe out, and that ending was pitch perfect (Even though there is no such thing as a perfect... Game, yeah).

    As someone who has heavily studied chess and chess like games FROM a design perspective, the game has achieved what you wanted, and is targeting an interesting audience. You could add back a good amount of the stuff the strong players like by just making the randomness be telegraphed a few turns in advance! Think like tetris showing a piece before dropping it. Bye for now!

      Ooo that’s a good idea! It keeps the chaos but adds some strategy back in!

    • @NickAndriadze
      @NickAndriadze 10 місяців тому

      Actually, the chaos being telegraphed ALONE would make the game form an RNG crapfest into a game that's *almost* as strategic as actual chess! Together with all the new and fun, creative and *chaotic* elements of course.

      You might have the ai difficulty cranked up too high. The way it works, if you are curious, is it looks at every move it can make and then for every move it looks at every response, and for every response it looks at all the responses to that. It does this little cycle for however long the difficulty is at. The algorithm does something called alpha beta pruning which cuts down the number of “futures” to look at but it is random whether it actually works well because it depends on how good the moves work if that makes sense. My guess is it got unlucky with the prunes and too many calls to the evaluation function were made. I left it in like that just in case someone has a crazy powerful computer.

    Hey friend I want to learn unity and be a pro like you how can I start learning

    • @WillHessGameDev
      @WillHessGameDev  Рік тому +1

      The biggest thing is that you need to understand that it takes time. If you know how to program, it becomes significantly easier. I first learned how to make basic console games in Java (like a guess the number sort of thing) before learning c# with unity (Java and C# are VERY similar), so I'd recommend spending a month or two learning how to program before jumping into everything unity has to offer. A great way to learn programming is with treehouse (teamtreehouse.com). Out of everything I did, a subscription to treehouse was most beneficial. Once you have the basics of programming down, clone some very simple games like pong, flappy bird, etc. There are a bunch of recourses on that stuff if you get stuck and you can always reach out to me! Good luck!

      Yeah maybe, but then it would take a lot of the chaos out of it because you can just chose to make everything a queen and have a super easy game. Plus it also takes out that sweet sweet randomness! Thanks for watching!
