4:30 - "It's like comparing Apples with Elephants!". Apples and Elephants are distantly related in the giant web of life, just like any other two living things. Shared DNA. If a creator was creating two distinct organisms via magic, there would be no need for shared DNA. Why, then, do we find shared DNA between literally everything alive? Was he just lazy? Did we get the lazy god?
If you claim the airplane had a creator, (of which we have many examples of people assembling airplanes) you should be able to back that up fairly easily, and is of little consequence (we already have plenty of functioning aircraft), unless you care to demonstrate otherwise.
If you claim every atom in the known universe was "created" (generated and tweaked to it's specific properties, then put together in it's "perfect" place), you need to be able to back that up, because we currently have zero examples of that happening. If you succeed in providing that evidence, we will have one example. Complexity doesn't enter the equation, except to make your side of the argument harder to prove for yourself, you dunce.

Hi David - I tackle some of William Paley's Watchmaker philosophy in my book 'Of Woodbridge and Hedgely' which is a literary examination of science denial set in 1820, where I superimpose the propaganda tactics used to deny global warming onto this earlier time period, focusing on evolution, geology, and agricultural science - mostly settled science in today's eyes - as my subjects, so that the audience can really see the mechanics of denial more clearly; sort of a 'historical lens'. Those interested can go to Amazon and get the ebook for ninety nine cents.

As a basic principle, the solution to a proposed problem (i.e. how does complex life exist) should not suffer from the same problem as the problem the solution is being offered to solve (i.e. how does God exist). God does not solve the problem of existence, but merely compounds the problem. Its the ultimate form of deflection, when being confronted with the problem of how complex things exist, to posit that God is an "explanation." He isn't. Asserting a God just pushes the question back one step further. God, by most definitions of him, is complex and functional, and therefore requires an explanation as much as the universe does and life in it. To simply say God just is or we don't know isn't good enough. It is a copout. If it satisfactory enough for theists to be content with the existence of God, without explanation, then if they were being intellectually honest (ha! ha!), they should see it as satisfactory for atheists to be content with life existing without a comprehensive explanation. As David Brooks has stated: "To explain the unknown by the known is a logical procedure; to explain the known by the unknown is a form of theological lunacy."

    • @samiamrg7

Steven Van Hulle I’m not a creationist, I’m just saying that our eyes are marvels of evolution, not like the Appendix which appears to be vestigial.

    • @stevenvanhulle7242
      @stevenvanhulle7242 6 років тому

      samiamrg7 said: "I’m not a creationist".
Yeah, I got that when I read other comments from you.
Most of the human body is simply amazing when you look at it. That's exactly the reason why creatards refuse to accept that it evolved that way. If you think the earth is 6000 years old it's hard to grab what "billions of generations" means. 'cause that's what was needed to get a (granted) pretty good eye.
Creatards also don't get that evolution doesn't have a goal, like a perfect species (whatever that may mean). Which explains the flaws in the eye's "design".
And don't get me even started about the recurrent laryngeal nerve! :-)
      Cheers!

"Who made God?" is a pointless question to a Theist that doesn't actually make sense
    in the same way that
"What's the meaning of life?" is a pointless question to an Atheist that doesn't actually make sense.
"Because it's in the Bible." is a pointless statement to an Atheist because they don't believe the Bible is the end-all
    in the same way that

God is not something you can prove "scientifically". You can have a philosophical debate about it (and there's good arguments on both sides there) but hoping to come up with some sort of 'hard proof' is a fool's errand.
Edit: just for clarification, when I say 'God' I'm not talking about religion (which is a man-made concept) but the philosophical idea of some sort of higher being, whatever form it takes

Tookeen We're "programmed" to assume agency. In our early stages we assumed agency in many things. The tree grows because it "wants" to reach the sky. The tides goes in and out because the tide "wants" to embrace the land etc. We find it very hard to believe that things can happen for no reason or just due to natural laws. It's actually adaptive, because assuming agency means you're more cautious/suspicious of things. Is that a shadow or a predator? Religion is a by product of such things.

Two things can have one thing in common without having anything else in common. Saying “the universe and a watch are complex, and a watch has a designer, so that means the universe has a designer too” is equivalent to saying “the universe and a watch are complex, and watches were made in the 16th century, so that means the universe was made in the 16th century too.”

As a biochemist, listening to these two try to discuss the intricacies of DNA is aggravating. Not to blame them, DNA and it’s biochemical properties is very complex and requires lots of dedication to develop a holistic understanding of. But non-enzymatic synthesis of nucleic acids is an active area of research, and it’s very readily verifiable that they can be produced this way. To say “it made itself” is semantic nonsense; chemicals and biomolecules are not sentient beings. They obey laws of physics and principles of chemistry. We know for example that transition metals and minerals of certain oxidation states can catalyze the synthesis of fatty acids from simple gases, and when they reach critical micellar concentration, they form a primitive biological compartment.
While it’s all still a hypothesis, we’re developing a solid explanation as to how the most primitive biomolecules could be synthesized non-enzymatically, and how they could have come together to create the first compartmentalized organism (since nucleus acid strands can zip and unzip, they can basically replicate themselves if the concentration of complementary bases is high enough, similar to what happens in a cell or in PCR, just without enzymes, so they would technically be the first self-replicating entities).

I find it interesting when people point out a house doesn't build itself or in this case a book didn't make itself and then say that because DNA is more complex it had to be made by someone else. They totally disregard the processes in nature which are predisposed to make certain forms and shapes. Those shapes are vastly different to houses or books but are much closer to the helix shape of DNA. If you look up the book 'Sensitive Chaos' by Theodore Schwenk (admittedly not the best read but the images are instructive and enlightening) and look at his images of flow making form you can see that there may be more to the formation of DNA than a random pile of materials coming together in a meaningful way. He was able to achieve forms which resemble things like a knee joint and even a cranium or walnut in cross section just by moving flowing fluids of different temperatures against each other.
Here's an example - not the best of them, can't find better online.

Great segment. Ray has recently shown up in my YT feed lately in debate with Matt Dillahunty in a couple of videos and also in some street preaching. His street preaching usually has people that he's somewhat caught off guard and go round for round with him. I am pleased with the style David took here whether it was for the sake of a time crunch in the segment or not you have to get straight to the point with people like Ray that are of the creationist mindset. It's very easy to watch them try and squirm their way out of the same arguments they used to try and prove why there is validity in their simple minded insertion of a god because they refuse to go and find the answers to things they don't understand. Or worse they just refuse to...well because they have "the book". Another creationist that is a bit well known is Ken Ham. Like Ray he speaks in circles but Ken knows a bit more of the science behind certain things than Ray, seemingly, or perhaps it's just a different approach, so he has some of the jargon that you'll research when done to confirm it's validity but his argument still comes to the same conclusion, they insert a god into what they can't and in many cases refuse to understand because of their presupposition with "their book". Check out the Bill Nye debate with Ken Ham from a couple years back, it's a good one.
And lastly with these type of people it's not so much that you debate with the intention of changing their minds, at least I don't think that is the approach in most cases because they are so far gone and usually they do this for profit so their livelihood is at stake. The point of it is for their audience, to perhaps hear a different perspective which may make them think. That is, if they haven't gotten too far down the rabbit hole.

As simple as Ray Comfort's arguments are, I don't think David's challenge defeats them. What he's essentially saying is that eternal things, however complex, don't need and can't have a designer so that's what sets god apart from the other complex things they were talking about such as a watch, DNA, book etc.

The creator argument falls apart for many reasons. My favorite is that they think god is the watch maker that created everything. So everything complex, simple, and everything in between is a creation, to Ray. That means everything we live in a world of watches, surrounded by watches, living as watches.
Also, I met Ray and one of his preachers at Comic Con this year. I debated and gave consent to use the footage. Even asked to not edit it to make me look bad, but I doubt that will happen. His preacher talked to and would change the subject when I had him cornered. I told him the bible can't be the perfect word of god because it has contradictions and errors. He asked for an example, so I said Adam and Eve had some sons, then they went to a town and married...where did these other people come from? He told me that Adam and Eve before having their sons mentioned in the bible, had enough children to populate a town who their sons then married and that incest was ok at first because Adam and Eve were genetically perfect, but became bad later when their later decedents were less genetically pure. I said, "Oh good, you do believe in genetics." Ray gave him a look, and he changed the argument to morality.

It's funny how creationists don't realize that the watchmaker argument, about the complexity of the human body, is actually an argument AGAINST creationism.
Ed and William are inventors having a chat over a coffee.
Ed: You know, this gizmo is really poorly designed. Look at it. It's just not reliable.
William: True, it's too complex. The best designs have the fewest parts.
Ed: That's what I mean. Fewer parts increase reliability.
William: Also because the dingus is easier to model, mathematically.
    Ed: And physically!
William: Oh, that reminds me! I just invented something new. Look at this animation.
    Ed: Cool! What is it?
William: Well... I'm calling it a "human", but I may change the name when it goes commercial. I don't think anybody would ever buy something called "human".
Ed (still watching video): Looks rather flexible. Lots of parts, uh?
    William (reluctantly): Yeah...
    Ed: Well?
    William: 37 trillion.
    Ed: ...
    William: ...

I don't think that anyone should argue about things they no idea of. Do you even know or have you ever had the experience of coming to know the fire of the Holy Spirit in your life when you receive Jesus as your Lord and savior? Have you ever known the serenity of God's love in your life? I dare anyone to know this side of God for them in their lives. It doesn't cost you anything and all you have to do is get to know who God is for you in your life. Forget who made who and what came first. You only need to know who He is for you in your life. I am a witness to how important he is to me and you should also. There is nothing like the gift He has given us. Nothing in this world can compare.

There are two agencies that exist. 'Personal or Mechanistic'. Our courts affirm this by deeming death for example either intentional homicide, manslaughter or incidental. This is the reason theist believe in God. While we know little about the non-physical nature of the mind, we know we exist. We know we have a dual nature like a computer program. The physical aspect that manifests itself in the physical medium of our bodies and the non physical part which can only be revealed if we choose to reveal it. Many a scholar has tried to dismiss this duality of nature but our best and brightest put it like this: To understand the the photon and electron we must accept the they act like a wave and a particle. A way is a nonphysical entity and is a building block like the particle. Particles become atoms then compounds and so forth while waves become harmonics and so forth. But there is one important difference between the physical and non physical realm. The non physical realm exist outside of time in term of the how entities there relate to one another. Only the expression of the non-physical entity or its relationship to another takes time. Hence God the ultimate non physical entity was/is/will always be eternal. He loves 'you' with an unending love and made you eternal too.

He leads with the organization argument, focusing on DNA. He claims that DNA arrives on the scene fully formed. There is plenty of science on the subject of how DNA came to be as an adaption, but the initial existence of DNA is still unknown. It is observed that the dual nature of DNA (which is what the D in DNA is all about), is necessary for persistence of the DNA during cell division. In terms of statistics, the science community does acknowledge that initial creation of DNA is statistically very low, and punts with the hypothesis on Panspermia, which proposes that DNA is spread through the universe via extremophiles riding on moving celestial bodies. So that, one can say that perhaps DNA wasn't created here, and was initially created somewhere else before earth formed. Basing a belief in God on things not yet known is common and has built in obsolescence. I would argue that a better approach to teach about God is to focus on developing a sensitivity to something beyond the self, call it whatever you will. That is how I went from atheist to Deist, because God revealed himself to me. Perhaps it is a delusion. I do not practice any religion at the moment. IMO, no person has the right to say they received instruction from God that someone else is required to do. There is no book, no commandments...
