That's awesome. I was just trying to find out more about Lupe Esparza . And the connection she had with Bill Medley. And what did she think of the song ..
Love that story! I was at the Rendevous that night when it was first sang. Is Susan Medley still around? I used to fly with her! Continental. I used to also talk with you guys at Newport Beach with my sisters. You were probably with Dick Dale The good ole days!!!
That's cool! That's been one of my favorite songs since the 60s. That's when I had my first band, and we started the set with Lupe Lu! Still one of my favorites.
The highlight of seeing the Beatles in their first U.S. tour was seeing the Righteous Brothers open. Best part of the concert. I was 14. I'm going on 70 now and will never forget. I wasn't a big Beatle can past their first 3 or 4 hits.
That's wonderful!! So cool to know that the origin of a great song is about a real person. Could she really dance like Bill said? I mean, the Watusi is hard to do! I don't know her but give her a hug from a fan!
Yo that's great. Wonder if your grandma was named after Lupe Velez, the first major Latin moviestar, the "Mexican Spitfire" who died quite dramatically in 1944
@@reuireuiop0 Lupe (short for Guadalupe) is a very, very common name in Latin America, especially for Mexicans and Mexican-Americans. It’s still a hugely fun song, and the original Lupe Lu is right to be proud of it.
My family moved to Santa Ana in 64 when I was a teenager and we really dug that they had their very own Bill Medley from that town. I live in Anaheim now where Bobby Hatfield is from, right down the street from the high school.
Video stops short! Darn! Little Latin Lupe Lu was maybe the first song I heard of the Righteous Brothers, I loved it from the beginning. I was so pleased to see them four times in concert, twice in Houston and twice in Reno. God bless you both. Bobby, rest in peace, brother!

Ha Bill such a great song I do remember back in 1965 or so the Mortitans in Alberque New mexico also did this I usta have a copy but its long gone BRAVO TO U !!!!!
This is a great video and Bill Medley sounds really down to earth despite his fame. I’m 40 now but have been a fan of this song as long as I can remember. I’m still looking for the very first pressing of this record that has the word “Moonglow” written in a semi circle surrounded by a moon and stars. It may have the been that they originally gave to the record stores and radio stations before it became nationally known. If anyone has a copy please let me know. Thank you.
mattyp3400 im only 22 but omg i love the songs by older people Neil Diamond oh yea its a shame Bobby Hatfield has already passed btw they got ready to do a performance and Bobby had a heart atatck but i love Bill Medley
We were dancing at parties and youth club in Jr High in Pasadena to Little Latin Lupe Lu in '62/''63. Bill and Bobby were badass R&B singers. Elvis don't dig no chumps!
I played this song when I was in the "XLs" in Phoenix AZ in the mid 60's-- it was always one of my favorites (with Bill Spooner, Mike Cross, George Cristea).
The band I was in The Dynamics, during the late sixties in Norfolk, Virginia, played this song. Great dance song for the teeny boppers at the time. To put a different twist, play it a little slower and in minors. Em, Am, Bm and throw in a Dm where needed.
Would very much like to know if Lupe is still around. Two comments mentioning her were written 8 and 12 years ago.In 1964 I was 17 so we'd be about the same age.
This is such a cool story. I went to Cal State Long Beach too. I had no idea they went there. I never knew that these guys grew up around here either. @Crzydays3: :-)

I just recently found out that some of my family knows Lupe Lu😊❤
I loved that song the 1st time I heard it in 1963. It fit the Pony or Watusi!!
Touches this Marine's heart.
Medley should have made more other a-go-go and twisty songs like this back in 1964 all would've been hits

Love the story about the black Marines.

I remember when this song came out. I was 14 or 15. Times were so much different back then. As if it all happened on another planet.
I know just what you mean brother
Got that right. I don't like the planet we're on now.
Thank you George. The best neighbor ever. We all grew up in a fun time. God bless you and your family.

I bought all their records at Birmbam's on 86th Street in Brooklyn! Bought ALL my records there! Brought back wonderful Memories! Thanks Bill Medley
One of my all-time favorite songs!
I love this interview. L.A. radio (plus San Bernardino stations) in the mid sixties were awesome. Love the song...one of my favourites by them.
I had a little Mexican girlfriend name Lupe too and we always played this song and I called her my "little Latin Lupe Lu". Wow! How coincidental!
Great story and perfect song
what a great story.
"Not a silly little song", one of my faves since '64. Wish it would get played more................
Love this man! Music man extraordinaire!! A loyal friend to Elvis too! TCB! Bill!

I was in a pretty popular local band here while in high school and whenever we wanted to get the crowd going we always played "Lil Latin Lupe Lu"
Yeah, me too.
My home town and high school Bill is referring to is Santa Ana and the Marine base was El Toro in Tustin, CA.
el toro closed in 1999..
He seems like a dude awesome!
I remember that station! Got my education as to what rock n' roll music was, from them. Never forgot the station or the music!

whenever i meet someone with the name Lupe or Guadalupe, i always think of this song...
From the early days of the Righteous Brothers to "The Time of My Life" duet with Jennifer Warnes, Bill has had a great career.
One of my favorite songs of theirs, hands down !
Great story and what an awesome song by the brothers and I disagree not a stupid song at all. A real classic and a real rocker
Yeah, it's a kick-ass song. And the Righteous Brothers version is the best.
Absolutely charming interview!
What a pretty name: Lupe Laguna! Movie star name.
Gene Weed was a DJ in So Cal in the 60s. I think he also had a syndicated local dance show.

One of the very first records I ever bought. a 45. I was about 14.

I was going to ask if Lupe Laguna knew that this song was about her, and I see from another, older post that she did. Which is great.
the moment I heard it, wow! Just wish they wrote more such music.
One of my most favorite Righteous Brothers' songs.
I use to let the righteous Brothers in the Firehouse when they were stell under age to watch Benny do his thing. good time

Other groups recorded it, but no one ever sang it like the Righteous Brothers did.
