It is great to see the old Papa band on You Tube. I followed Papa Doo through the Disney years. I was 16 yrs old when I met everyone, lets just say I am a baby boomer. The last time I saw the band was at the Valencia Town Center in Valencia, CA during the summer concert program. My husband really enjoyed the show, he laughed at me because got so in to it again. Thanks for all the memories.
I would suggest that you get the movie "Deadman's Curve" and watch it. Jan was partially paralyzed and had brain damage from a car accident in 1966. It took him nearly a decade to partially recover and return to the stage. He was an inspiration to all who saw him, and I am proud to have been on the same stage with him. - Don Z. Papa Doo.
Actually, Jan did more than you see in this video. This particular song features Papa Doo Run Run. I'll try to put one up featuring Jan. 15 years after his accident, Jan still had good days and bad, but he was always there, would never give up, and always gave it everything he had. You won't find many artists today with that kind of courage and strength. - Don Z - PDRR
Hi Don, It's Karla H. my husband and I hung out backstage at the Jan and Dean Disney concerts. Jan and Dean signed albums for us. You guys were always awsome!! I always loved it when you guys opened the concert and sang Lady Love, a true love song. We live in upstate NY now, wish you guys could do a concert here sometime and sing Lady Love. Thanks Don for the memories. Karla
Watching this is bittersweet for me. These were the best times of my life. Nothing has compared to being young and hangin out with the boys in the band. Good times!!!!
cont - 10 years later, and after years of rehabilitation, my band, Papa Doo Run Run, convinced the duo to get back together again. We subsequently toured with Jan & Dean (Phase 2) for 5 fantastic years.
Wow! I saw J&D with PPDRR at Disneyland in 1979 and Brian Wilson came out and played Barbara Ann on bass dressed in a robe! It was a great moment for me, but most in the audience didn't realize it.
Wow thanks for posting this Don. I was a Disneyland regular back in the late 70's and mid 80's and hung around with all the locals at the space stage , tomorrowland terrace, plaza gardens and even videopolis when it first opened. Good times those were.
As many times as I've watched this song, I still get goosebumps when the lights go down and the spotlights sweep the audience while they Woo... woo ooh ooh ooh. !...🤩
You wouldn't know me, Don. I was a fan way back when. Still love to listen to you when I can. Saw you on PBS last weekend on a show about Santa Cruz. Sorry I can't remember more about that song right now....I'll check out my LPs and get my facts straight. Anyway, my girlfriends and I used to see "Papa" whenever we got the chance.
This is still one of my 'go to' concerts that I watch, especially after a lousy day at work, to help me relax and unwind 🙂 It even helps me go to sleep😴 Thanks again, guys !🙂❤
Don Z. Wow...this brings back a lot of memories. My friends and I spent many summer nights at Disneyland watching you guys. Fun times!!! The last time I saw you was in Victorville, CA at the Cocky Bull...must have been 15 years ago. What year did Mark Ward and Jim Armstrong leave?
Thanks for answering Donnie. For the life of me I couldn't remember the year they left...old age is setting in. =-) Don't know if you remember me but I hung out with Patty, Jenny and Sheree. Take Care, Mary
Thanks for your reply, I'm looking forward to seeing some of Jan in action, post-crash. I remember seeing him a long time ago on Sha Na Na's show. The crap I used to watch in the 70's!!!
What a blast to stumble across this video! I first found you guys in December of '79, new years eve. This video brings back such fun memories of following you from place to place for years after that. I live near Santa Cruz and always intend to drive over the hill to see you. I gotta do it next year! Thanks for all the fun times guys!
Thanks for remembering. I remember that gig at the Cocky Bull. Interesting gig - small club - gigantic sound system. Armstrong and Ward left the band in 1980 after our final J&D tour. They both stayed with J&D for a couple of years then went their seperate ways. Armstrong has a duo today in OC called Vertikals, Ward has his own appraisal co and sometimes plays with Dean. We're all still really good friends.
I absolutely LOVE this concert ! I've watched it countless times(on Chris Reise site) and it seems to be my " go-to" concert to just relax and enjoy; it even makes me feel better after a rotten day. I got Deadman's Curve video back in early 80s and have watched it countless times. I didnt know the band was PDRR until this past year when I learned to look up stuff on UA-cam and Google ( I'm technology challenged ) I never saw a Jan and Dean concert :-( except those on UA-cam. I never cease to be amazed how far Jan was able to come back after such a horrible accident. Papa Doo Run Run and Jan and Dean were so great together. It's great that all of you were such good friends. Bless you, guys!
Thanks, Lynn. Glad you enjoy our concert from nearly 40 years ago. Wow! Papa Doo is still out there doing our thing. You should come see us live. What part of the country are you in? - Don Z. Papa Doo...
papadoorunrun OMG! I don't believe it! A reply from Don Z. ! You just made my day, THANK YOU! I never dreamed....wow...! I feel like I know all of you after watching this and other videos. I've been a Jan and Dean fan for years, and now Papa. You guys were so great together. I'll bet it was kinda interesting working with Jan. I'm so glad he was able to come back as far as he did. Anyway, I think you guys are great, and keep on rockin' for years to come. I live in Belleville, Michigan, not far from Detroit. Thanks again for taking time to send a reply :-) Thanks PDRR for helping get Jan and Dean get back together back then.
@pfgbrian, On that age thing, I'm right there with you. Papa Doo Run Run played at one of our high school dances in 1974, but it was the year our high school opened and our yearbook staff did not get a picture of the band (just the people dancing). However, PDRR was such a hit, that we wanted them back ASAP. Unfortunately, based on a note I had written in my 1975 yearbook (which I pulled out for a friend's 50th birthday last month), "Papa Doo Run Run" was not available for our next dance! ; )
Don, great replies. I have two questions about this show. 1)who are you winking at in the audience, and 2) why is Jimi-Jo in cut-offs - I know there is story there somewhere. Also, do a search for Jimi Jo on UA-cam and you'll see him sitting in with Instant Replay at Disneyland. Papa RULES!!!
Woke up this morning and I wasn't sure if "On the Radio" was Papa's or Bel Air Bandit's. Sorry if I'm wrong about that Don. I know some of Papa went with the Bandits, right? Memories get a little "blurry" some times. :) Anyway, loved "Lady Love", too.
cont - After a hugely successful recording career in the mid 60's with Dean (Jan & Dean), with over a dozen top 10 records, he was in a car accident and suffered SEVERE brain damage.
Poor Jan... I was looking for a vid that had some of him performing after his crash... I noticed he really wasn't doing much here aside from bumping into people, not even singing... really sad that one of the best minds in producing was reduced to that.
@narcovice, as i posted to @papadoorunrun, even that near-fatal crash didn't cause jan to slow down. he loved music and living life to the fullest. so, my guess would be that, if he had had an opportunity it to do all over again, jan would fight the draft board once again.
It was extremely hard for Jan, the right side of his body was still paralyzed and he suffered from aphasia - a trauma to the brain that affects motor skills and memory.
My name's Rebecca. I think I spoke to you a time or two. Talked to Mark W a few times and a couple of the other guys. Somehow I even got to know Stevie Dromenske a bit. Wasn't he part of Papa in the beginning? Like I said, it was just me and a couple of my college girlfriends following you guys occasionally. No stalker stuff!! Just fun times. I'll post a picture or two when I get the chance and I figure out how to do it! :)
His Rick was stolen several years ago, along with several other guitars, from our truck. We think we know who did it but have no proof. Jimi now plays a Danelectro bass.
Oh yeah - I know the one you're talking about. Papa Doo parted with J & D at the end of our 1980 tour. That record was made with their new band (Bel Air Bandits?) in 1981 or 82. I don't know more than that, cuz Papa isn't on it! - Don z.
oh ya now i rememebr thats in storage as soon as i findem ill send the pictures the looks of the car dont look like anyone servived it. .had a coupon for a game someone stole the damn thing rip offers was a contest to win something from jan and dean might have worth money today
For more info you should go to jananddean dot com or rent the movie "Deadman's Curve" - the true story of Jan & Dean. I'm gonna remove your comment to keep you from being embarrassed any further.
luke12191 Your reply was 10 ywars ago, and NOT VERY NICE ! And by now, you've probably heard, read about, or saw Deadman's Curve about Jan &Dean.. Considering the horrible car wreck he was in, almost died in, and years of rehab to overcome severe injuries, he looks and does PRETTY DAMN GOOD. There aren't too many out there in same or similar situatons, that can do what Jan did. He's been gone now since 2004 BUT NOT FORGTTEN.
ronald ferreira Considering the horrific car crash and he nearly died, and years of rehab, I think he looks and does PRETTY DAMN GOOD. Oh, and YOU'RE the same person who just recently ( 2018, on Chris Reise site) said Busted ! Jan was lip syncing. Not a nice thing to say. If you think it's SO BAD, why are you watching ? .
Some of the best times of my life God Bless ya all.
Jan looked like he loved every minute of this♥(the whole concert)
RIP Jan! You will always have a special place in my heart
You guys played at Woodside High School for a few years in the mid 70's. Always a fantastic time.

"Deadman's Curve" is a terrific movie. Every Jan and Dean fan should watch it.

My 3 friends and I went almost every Saturday night!
As many times as I've watched this song, I still get goosebumps when the lights go down and the spotlights sweep the audience while they Woo... woo ooh ooh ooh. !...🤩
I'd love to see some footage from the space stage at Disneyland when you guys played there back in the day!
That's where I saw them for the first time!
Ha, ha!! What about "On the Radio"? Loved it and fell asleep listening to it at night lots of times....ah what fun memories!
We saw them during this tour! They were at Disneyland. We followed papadoorunrun for quite a while after that.
My girlfriends and I would go every Saturday night to see them.
I went to this tour concert in "79. What a great time. I sure miss those days.

Never heard of this band...but doggone what a nice job on this great tune...
I saw them twice at *Ontario Place* in Toronto,Ontario both in the summer of 1985 and again in 1986.Absolutely awesome concerts...:):)
Oh, you did great on the PBS show, of course!
Thanks for the memories!! Would love to see Don Zirelli sings Lady Love, my all time favorite Papa song!!
Don Z.

Glad you watched the movie. It's amazing that he wasn't worse off than he was after that crash.
I seen them in 1980 at the Hot rod Run in Lodi, CA So awesome!!!
Just a correction on the date. This was July 8, 1980. Ontario Place in Toronto. It was the first concert I had ever been to.

It was extremely hard for Jan, the right side of his body was still paralyzed and he suffered from aphasia - a trauma to the brain that affects motor skills and memory.
Better ask my wife, Margie about that. ;-)

I'm a Beach Boys fan, PDRR sounds more like the Beach Boys than the Beach Boys :-)
I asked Jim why the stupid visor. He said "Because it really pissed off Jan!"
Mark Lassman LOL too funny! I love hearing about little details like that.
@narcovice The one u said u have of jans accident
