Despite the circumstances as to why he has a beard I do like it. He looks more grown up. Thank god he's come back I was this close to not watching anymore. Jamie is a brilliant actor and he brings so much to playing Jay.

Sometimes siblings aren’t always blood.
Amen to that! I've got an adopted brother and 2 surrogate brothers and an adopted sister and surrogate sis that I've known and been so close to more than half my life. Got 3 real brothers... Or had, one commit suicide at 34... And 2 big sisters and my other adopted, or CHOSEN family have done more for me than some of my so called "blood" relatives, some of whom, ripped me to shreds and abused me my whole life.
Just goes to show, really... Proves that the family you CHOOSE or more importantly, who CHOOSE YOU are the ones who show you that they are there, that they would do anything for you and vice versa. That's why I always see Ben and Jay as true brothers. Blood means fuck all and they prove that to all of us who see that blood isn't thicker than water after all (metophorically that is). Pardon my language. This scene has always tugged on the heartstrings as well as Ben choosing his brother and goes to sleep on the bench with Jay to make it clear to Phil, that Jay means pretty much more than ANYBODY to him.
It's the same with Shirley (my fave character along with Mick, Kat and Stacey) who failed at being a real mother but is more than making up for it now, and has made up for it with Ben, even after 'Ev, Jay, Dennis... Etc. She's like the new Pat of the Square with Sharon being the new Peggy in my eyes.
I love their love/trust - hate/contempt relationship. Just like Pat and Peggy with Frank, hating each other but deep down? The best of friends when they got on.
I see it being like that for Sharon and Shirl. They've already shown what a funny double act they are when they're getting on. How they care for each other when the other is going through such rough times aka, Shirley being kind, loving toward Sharon and holding her when Denny died.
Then there's Phil and Ian..
Not love but theu turned that corner of acceptance and care and understanding and respect.... Best scene has gotta be when Phil held Ian after Lucy died. The look of fear Ian had after realising he'd cried on Phil but Phil TRULY giving so much of a shit about Ian in that moment... That the fear/hate between them FINALLY stopped! They turned that corner and it was the most beautiful scene EVER! Family isn't always sunshine and roses and sometimes? Help and care can come from such an unexpected source 😍
