You can also use wax on joins if you need them to dry slower. For instance if you live in a hot, dry area your pots may dry too fast and crack.

Hallelujah! I love having naked clay on show too!
I wanted to add a couple of things -
    - just as the glaze on the pot has dried the stuff left on the wax should still be wet, if you wipe with a damp sponge at this point it's really easy to take off
    - at some point you will drip wax on your piece!
    - to get it off you need to let it dry, scrape with a knife, attack with a heat gun then sand it.
    - alternatively just bisque it again!
    - it gives off a lot of fumes in the kiln when burning off - so if you don't have to use it - don't!
    - a nice alternative to using wax for the foot is to get a basin, or even the table top, create a very shallow pool of water (half the height of you foot) and stand the piece in it for a short while before glazing. The saturated bisque will take on less glaze and be way easier to wipe off. Also if it absorbs beyond the foot onto the pot a little it will cause a glaze gradient and help manage runnier glazes.

As to making peace with losing stuff in the firing - I make pieces. I have been experimenting with primitive clay and firing methods and break up my flops with a hammer and fill the potholes in my driveway. Now they are real POTholes!

I like to touch the raw clay the texture is great. wash g the brushes with soapy water helps but it dose ruin brushes. When using carbon trap shino glazes I like to put wax on top of the glaze to create great contrasts.

thanks a lot for your video !! , i have an idea to use wax resit, said to me if you agree first sorry for my english , so i think wax burn about 200 °c or 392 Fahrenheit, my idea is to test an apply on a piece of biskit pottry a plane layer of wax resit first an dry of course , after that use a cheap laser like ortur laser master 20w to draw a nice picture ( laser burn up the wax ) and after that you glaze all , and just the cool picture graving by laser are glazing and after that you go to the kiln , what do you think about ??

Just a little tip from my own experiences - when in a pinch (or too lazy to order another bottle of wax resist) I have found that Elmer's School Glue works in most applications. Shellac also works amazingly but smells awful when burning out.

Ohhh boy, my teacher did not told me much about waxing. He basically just told me to put it on my project where u did not want the glazed, wish is true, but me been a beginning I end up putting to much in several places and did not told me how hard it was to take it out.

  • @adgepipkin2715

    hallelujah!
First off, I have found that I have not had issues with glaze clumping together with wax if you let it dry for 6 hours or more. Most of the time I wing it just because it takes so long, but that's what it is.
Second, if I ever get wax drops on my pot I don't want and it's on bisqueware, I just hold the open flame from my lighter up to it and it's ready to be glazed.
Thirdly, have you done a video on design? I'd be curious as to what your thoughts are regarding the elements and principles of design.

Thanks for the tips! How long do you have to wait before adding wax onto a first layer of glaze (to resist a second glaze)? I’ve read that it’s best to wait a day but looks like you’ve had luck probably just waiting until the first glaze layer is dry?

new potters wax resisting: if you're getting a brush, make sure it's relatively inexpensive, wax can tend to ruin brushes over long periods of time.

It helps to also dip your brush in soapy water before you dip it in the wax. The soapy water does not effect the wax resist.

You would have to send it out to a Testing lab. So probably not as the chemicals move around in the kiln. Lead can come out into the air for you to inhale.

hey, here's a basic question that no UA-cam teacher I've seen has addressed. maybe you could demonstrate the best way to.. (this is embarrassing) make a ball of clay ready to throw. I spend so long slapping and rolling the slices of bagged clay into a round ball, I'm sure there's a better way without adding air bubbles...

Hello there dirty Donte😁(sorry if I didn't spell your name right... actually, maybe not... Cause I am honestly confused for some seemingly logical reason...Till you clarify...) Love your classes as I have been dying to get dirty for many years now, finnaly down in it, give a high I can't explain... but my resources are fairly limited.
Though I am currently working on red clay so far and won't know how long it will take before I get to know everything about it. I still want to learn about the other types of clay bodies that I can look forward to working with. I intend to experiment with the ones available near me but I need some insight. So would you make a video about the different types of clays you know about, experienced and the characteristics of each of them? And maybe, which ones complement each other if brought together to make any particular type of piece?

  • @vivianaallen3462

Hii new to pottery here, thank you for the video! Can wax resistbe used on any type of firing and glaze?

    • @EarthNationCeramics
      @EarthNationCeramics  2 роки тому

      Yes.
It burns off around 500 degrees Fahrenheit anyway and most kiln fires go above that.
Just be careful not to put it in the same day that you put the wax on because it does carry a facet of water and sometimes it will affect your glaze so it's best to let it sit for a couple of days after you apply it.

As someone who would never want any of my subscribers to hurt themselves I would say follow the instructions but as a sane logical person who is still alive and uses wax resist all the time, no, literally none of us wear a mask when using wax resist.
Most of us just use gloves at most

    • @EarthNationCeramics

I've heard that it works but I've never tried it.
The wax that Potters uses usually mixed in with water to make it more fluid and I imagine you would have to do that with beeswax unless you're constantly keeping it warmed up.
I've never tried it but if you do please let me know how it goes

    Hallelujah Brother!
I think I might be a ceramifile (did I spell that correctly?!)
I'm not that experienced with wax resist, but I think that most important thing when using it is common sense. Well common sence is crucial whenever you do something. So to sum up this vid - I agree with you theories on wax resist ;)
Another way to glaze your pottery is "The wife method". I have a wife and this techniquelooks like: WIFE! HONEY! Could you help me please! I really need you right now! :D

    • @Kfaczor
      @Kfaczor 7 років тому

As I wrote before - common sence it the point ;) I won't ask you to make gold out of poo, don't worry.
I was wondering how would you perform when not dealing with your prefered form. There is a particular ancient pottery culture I like. It is called Linear Pottery culture (Linear Pottery culture). This is my impression of it made of coils (of course): facebook.com/sambukowegarnki/photos/a.656834061134975.1073741828.656825791135802/670764916408556/?type=3&theater
The piece on the picture is about 3,5 litres ( 118.35 flz oz)
I challenge you to throw something like this on the wheel. You can use whatever technique/clay/glaze/underglaze you want ofcourse. If you do it I will send my favourite glaze to you from Poland (1 lb in powder form, food safe according to the EU and after checking US customs for any restrictions)
My written english is even worse than my spoken english ;)
