Her dance series is so expertly choreographed in her routine. You don't even notice it because it IS choreography. I miss routines with this kind of artistic construction... and Miller was such an exquisite dancer. She doesn't get enough credit for her artistry on FX.
Agreed. I respect the gymnasts of today (obviously they work hard and are extremely talented), but I don't enjoy watching them nearly as much. Everything seems so robotic. The actual artistry part of gymnastics has long since been gone. The dancing was a beautiful part of gymnastics and this routine demonstrates this beautifully. This is one of the reasons I prefer to watch Russian gymnasts: they have a background in ballet and their routines utilize the artistry of the sport and always have beautiful music to enhance their routines.
What a beautiful routine! She is an awesome dancer as well. Very poised, and her artistry is stellar. Still one of the greats, and one of my favorites of all time.
@@dylanthepickle6428 To me listening to him while doing her floor routine at the Olympics was annoying, but with me being the extremely rare exception: nobody is perfect
Back when dance and artistry were actually well incorporated into gymnastics. The gymnasts of today (moreso here in the US, actually) are outstanding in their own right, but the dance aspect is pretty much gone and you're really just waiting for the next amazing tumbling pass between a lot of robotic movements. You can tell that ballet, contemporary dance, and jazz styles were an integral part of gymnastics back in the 90s. I miss that aspect so much.
As another comment said, it’s all the code of points. If they never changed it the way they did, there would definitely still be that balletic dance aspect that almost every gymnast used to have. There’s a select few today who still have it, like riley McCusker and others, but it’s sort of rare. The code of points no longer rewards those nice dance movements as much as the passes and the jumps, so the gymnasts just squeeze in a few hand movements and call it a day. It’s quite sad actually, because they aren’t even trained to dance anymore. It would be very nice to see more dance today in the routines, but unless the COP is changed back I know that won’t happen. I could seriously talk about this all day, but I’ll just stick to watching 70s-90s gymnastics lol
Shannon has beautiful lines and her quality is always perfect. Shannon is known as a rounded gymnast with no major weaknesses on any events, which led to her multiple all around titles. Shannon is remembered for her Olympic success along with perfect form and execution. But most importantly, She is a role model in the gymnastics community for all ages.
i remember being OBSESSED with her and this leo. she had absolutely incredible musicality and dance ability. i think she was the most skilled with her dance skills, not as stiff as most gymnasts typically are. you can really see her ballet training here.
This is Nationals but Shannon nailed every landing and had the best presentation of anyone at this meet. She deserved the best floor score of this meet
buddy boy And now you have Catalina Ponor from Romania competing consistently on beam and floor at almost 30 and Oksana Chusovitna still vaulting at 42 lol
Right! Simone Biles was 19 at the 2016 Olympics and continues to improve. One thing I'm glad about gymnastics these days (which isn't much) is that at least the sport isn't just about underage waifs anymore.
These are the times when I used to enjoy watching gymnastics so much, it’s some of the best memories I have with my grandma. Gymnastics is kinda robotic now.
Love this routine. Great music and choreography. Even though that double layout wasn't perfect, I really respected her going for a more difficult routine. You could tell that this was not easy for her, but she fought through it did it so well.
When I was 6, she was my hero. I learned to do a back walk-over on my own from her. Around 13 I was doing back/ front flips on a trampoline. (self taught)
Well if she hit floor in team optionals she would have likely bumped Dawes out of the finals (due to Dawes's compulsory score). As it was Dawes only made it as alternate to Strug and Moceanu, despite outscoring both in optionals, and only got to compete due to Strug WDing. Then she would have only had to beat Moceanu for a medal which seems doable.
My favourite Shannon floor routine. I wish she'd been able to hit like this in the Olympics. I know the DLO was piked down here, and chest low on the full twisting double, but she was so good at hiding that stuff. She didn't really have enough power for the DLO though, I'd have liked for them to have realised that and structured the routine a bit differently. Might have helped with the final pass too.
I agree with you. This is my favorite floor routine ever from Shannon Miller. I think it is absolutely beautiful and I thought the same thing - I wish she would have executed this routine exactly the same at the Olympics! I had a feeling, however, that she was always going to find the double layout in particular to be very challenging and it did end up biting her a bit.
@@pappysprite Steve Nunno was a horrible coach and horrible man, and wanted her to do skills for his own ego, it was never about what was best for his athletes. He atleast was better in that regard with Shannon than everyone else since she was his favorite, but still selfish at times. Kerri Strug who was coached by him for over a year even spoke about that in her book. He could have and should have had her do a different skill she could hit more consistently, and still been out of a 10. However his ego wanted a double layout despite the adverse risk to her.
If she would have hit that routine like that in Atlanta, what do we think her score would have been like with the international judges? 9.8 range? 9.837-50 ish?
Is it just my perception or was the floor a lot less ‘springy’ back then?? I was just watching Aly Raisman doing her final floor exercise in the 2012 Olympics and the floor she was on seemed almost trampoline springy. Listening hear to Shannon’s performance it sounds brutal when she lands after a tumble.
Yes, it was less springy. 4 inch springs were introduced in the 80s (it was just a hard solid floor before the 80s), and recent years we had 8 inch springs, allowing for more air time and more complex acrobatics.
When i was a kid i always enjoyed watching her performances. I actually got into gymnastics cause i wanted to be this good one day. Yeah never happened lol.
Great job Shannon did here. The music is beautiful, mixing very well with the tumbling and her interpretation is on point. I love her turns whether she is standing up or rolling on the floor. Great posture as well. Love it! As good as you can get.
Beautiful routine. That sort of tours jete jump with her legs separating at the end like butterflies is SO gorgeous and SO unique. It's like flying cartwheels. And this routine is so unique. So much of what I see now on floor exercise looks the same to me. I think Steve Nunno and Shannon Miller were a pairing for the ages. And Shannon wasnt abused (as far as I know). From the moment Nunno saw Shannon from afar when she was just a determined little girl it was a riveting alliance. Shux. I just read a very negative comment about Nunno pushing Shannon and others more for ego than what was good for them. The comment said Keri Shrug said something about it in her book. If it is true, I am very sorry to hear this. I did notice Shannon wasnt joyous after the routine when Nunno was hugging her, as if it had been too big of a strain and she had felt too much pressure-and-was trying to please Nunno too badly. She looked worried throughout and afterward that seemed beyond just good concentration or being tired. What a gymnsst Shannon was though. I think the double laid out summersault was incredible.
That's Simone Biles. Biles has earned eight Olympic medals, beating Shannon Miller as the most successful American gymnast in the Games. Biles has four golds to Miller’s two
In terms of tumbling it´s definitely her most difficult floor exercise and well done, although in terms of some of her skills it's not the precise and mechanical Shannon that we used to see some years before;
Please don't come for me - I am genuinely asking. I love Simone Biles and I started looking at old footage of other gymasts to see how gymnastics have progressed, and I can't tell why people consider Simone Biles better than Shannon Miller? Shannon Miller looks like she can do all the routines Simone can do. Maybe it's me not counting how many rotations Shannon is doing. Can someone please explain to me? Thank you.
I mean if you really looked at their routines, you would notice that Shannon is not even close to Simone, heck she was struggling to do a double layout and it’s Simone last pass after doing a triple double and her double layout still looks better than Shannon. Simone is doing a yurchenko double pike on vault, Shannon could only wish and pray to be even close to do that. Simone tho can do Shannon routines easy. And Simone difficult just far exceeds Shannon capabilities. Only thing Shannon does better than Simone is dance😂.
