  • The symptoms of esophageal cancer are common ailments most people initially ignore. Dr. Peter Enzinger talks about esophageal cancer and explains how to spot the warning signs. Find out more about treatment and care for people with cancer of the esophagus: www.dana-farber.org/Adult-Care...
    Transcription:
Reporter: Even at 70, it’s hard to keep Ed Gardella off the softball field.
    Ed: Ah, first day.
Reporter: But when he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, instead of stepping up to home plate, Ed had to step back. Even more than 30 years in law enforcement couldn’t prepare him for this battle.
Ed: I was feeling kind of beat up during that period of time, but never once did I want to die, I just entertained the thought that dying can’t be as bad as this. Hey, what have you got?
Reporter: Like most people who get esophageal cancer, the disease caught Ed and his wife Elaine by surprise. The warning signs are common ailments most people initially ignore, like problems swallowing, chest pain or heartburn, weight loss, and fatigue. Dr. Peter Enzinger is Ed’s doctor. He’s an esophageal cancer expert at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
Dr. Enzinger: It certainly is not as common as the big cancers-lung, breast, prostate cancer-but it does occur in about 14,000 patients a year in the United States. It seems to occur much more so in men than in women. Men have about a tenfold higher risk of this cancer than women do.
Reporter: After undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and then radiation, Ed has been cancer free for more than five years. Besides practicing his swing, Ed now spends his time mentoring other cancer patients, giving them the same support others gave him when he was going through treatment.
Ed: She took both my hands, and she said, “You keep on keeping on.” And I thought about that a couple hundred times-even today. You keep on keeping on.
Reporter: At Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, I’m Anne Door reporting.

I am so very sorry. I'm glad that there are new treatments available. I believe that my brother had esophageal cancer for much longer than 5 months. I believe that he was misdiagnosed for about 4 years. I'm sure you are scared. I will lift you up in my prayers.

Unfortunately the end biopsy result said I have esophageal cancer. Have the PET scan and endo ultrasound tomorrow to determine what stage its in. Doctors said these days they have better treatments for it. They already told me I need surgery, chemo and radiation and I'm really scared. I hope no one suffers of this disease, stop smoking and eat smarter to avoid these diseases..

@officialvangcreative How did it go for him in the end?

They immediately started him on Chemo, put in a port and did mapping for Radiation therapy. He is set up for weekly Chemo. We immediately started reading about all the alternative treatments and found that Alkalizing the body was recommended by every alternative doctor every clinic along with a organic raw vegetarian diet and fruit diet.

My son had testicular cancer in 1998 which with matastas to his aorta with surgery of the tumor with 5 rounds of Chemo and Radiation at that time. His platelet stayed around 60. He had high Alfa Feta Protein levels that never went down, so they started looking to see why he had swollen lymph glands that were just ignored. We changed hospitals and doctors and they called in a Cancer specialist and he ordered a Pet Scan. Low and behold it lit up over 30 spots in his chest.

@Cindy221 I hope it went well, and I don't think you get cancer unless you have been having GERD symptoms for a prolonged time, like a few years. (my friend who is studying medicine told me this)

The Gerson diet along with most other diets all say that Chemo and Radiation should be the last line of defense, but when you are in stage 4 already do you dare take a chance and go against your doctor and stop Chemo and Radiation? or do both. I already saw his platelets go from 38 to over 91 which it hasn't done in over 10 years, and surely it wasn't from the Chemo, so it had to be the massive amount of Probiotic and Vitamins he is taking. Would love to hear opinions.

September 2012 I started throwing up my food due to not being able to swallow/keeping it in my stomach. I weighed 218lbs. Today April 23rd/2013 I weigh 168 lbs. Lost a lot in the last 3 weeks, did an endoscopy with inconclusive results, doctor found a lump down where stomach meets with esophagus and told me there's a possibility I have Esophageal cancer. Today I am going to get my CT Scan results. I am going through hell, I hope it's nothing like cancer...

Note: All the doctor said is that they give his a 5% chance of survival. How do you like those chances. He is 53 years old and in other wise fairly good health. I am 72 and in 1992 I went through GERD and was put on an Animal and plant enzyme which stopped it completely. I was also told that this is hereditary and was in out DNA. Sorry son.

I pray that your results will be benign. This video feels misleading to me. I had a brother who died of esophageal cancer when he was 52. He was diagnosed in May of 1991 and died in October 1991. :'(

We saw him for a second opinion , my husband has stage 4 esophageal cancer. It was a horrible experience, he was doom and gloom and had no empathy and compassion. We weren’t impressed with him at all, he needs to work behind the scenes in research instead of with people. SHAME ON YOU, WE LEFT IN TEARS!
