love this channel fella, targeted at guys like me who have not the coin or time to produce high end terrain, good delivery, an anyone can do approach. Thanks
I just discovered your channel, and its great! I use baking soda mixed with paint for texture paint. Its much finer than even the most fine grain grit. It gives a really nice subtle texture to dry brush.
A better way to texture walls and floors is using artistic sand. Its very fine, almost powdery. You mix that with paint (I prefer a grey latex) and paint it on. When it dries, it has the texture of mixed concrete.
You could just go by anyplace that does industrial or commercial coating and most of them will just give you small amounts of sifted media from their sand blaster once it's spent. The grit can range from coarse to extra fine.
just a side note... your galeforce fine grit looks to me like builders sand... not sure how exspensive your model grit is but if your into a big build then id defo look into getting builders sand xD dont be conned by companys for buying exspansive materials when they are just using building mats to make these things ps if your just basing models then the smaller option would be better but luckily for me i have builders sand, pebbles out the front of the house, also if you go out onto the street and brush it you will get small pebble from the tarmac and there you have stones!
anthony swinburne That was old stock mate, I sieve builders ballast into various grades at home now as it's only £1.50 for a 20kg bag and I get all the various gradients I need that way :-)
Hey Mel. Could you make a How to build a Mage Tower with Foamboard? Or do u think the material is not really suited to do that? :) PS: I really enjoy your Channel Mate. Keep up the good work! Your truely an inspiration!
Hi Mel, have you tried watered down wall filler for interior walls? It's also good for mud on bases and exterior walls on fantasy and medieval buildings.
nice tips and tricks :) something that i'm wondering about, doesnt the watered-down pva glue affect the paper finish/-layer of the foamboard in that it starts to dissolve a bit and comes loose from the foam??
Heya, Maybe a silly question but I won't know till I ask :) Could you 'draw' on to the foamboard to leave an indentation the shape of rough stone (like a castle) Thanks for the videos- enjoying working my way through them :)
I have been following your videos and have learned a wealth of information- superb stuff mate- In the process of making a castle/keep ruin using your guide as a...guide? lol Thanks a lot.
Hi Mel. Love the tutorial it's been great. I've been following you through the different stages (this is my first building and I can't believe how easy it is) But I have ran into a problem. My base has warped slightly. If I push down on one corner the other raises by about 10mm. Is there a way to fix this? If i where to put it all onto a base board and put weights on it do you think it'd regain its shape? Any help and advice is appreciated. Thanks and keep up the vids.
Not really, the whole piece used less grit than a 60mm base needs to cover. I've tried sandpaper in the past but I didn't like the results, embossed wallpaper works much better mate
I guess I should clarify. You do a thin coat of DAP sealer, then sand it with low grit to give a rough sand. Makes a lot of scratches and pok marks. Embossed wallpaper huh? I'll give it a shot. Always willing to try new things! Also with the dap sealer: If you put down pieces of tape in random places, you can pull it when the sealant dries, making it look like chunks of plaster have fallen off!

Matthew Mroczkowski Thought I'd replied to this but yeah, cracking tip mate, I'll give it a go.

Shannon Gill Nice tip matey :-)
Great one Mel!
Cheers mate
Another great video Mel, yeah. ;)
Cheers mate ;o)
That's a new technique to me. I've put grit to my walls in a mixture of paint/grit/glue. :) White glue is the best!
I normally use filler mate but had to show this one because it's so simple. Gotta love PVA!
great tips mate,cheers for sharing
No worries matey, thanks! :oD

I'm sure it'll hit the let's makes list eventually mate

Yeah mate, I normally use filler for my walls, on city stuff, I usually stipple it on but I wanted to show a few different ways of doing it
my only question is; how strong is the second floor? Will it hold a Space Marine Dreadnaught at least?
baelliott79 Easy mate :-)
For building and road bases for real concrete try sand paper works really well dry brushed gray good uploads by the way got my sub ;)
David Hance I've used it for roads in the past but never thought of it as a texture for buildings. Cheers matey ;-)
thanks for the reply keep up the good work :)
nice tips and tricks :)

No mate, you only get those issues if you leave a large puddle on a piece or have a very very watered down pva mix mate
Great vid, and thx for the tips, like it, two thumbs up
Cheers matey

Thanks for the videos- enjoying working my way through them :)
You can if you remove the cardboard from one side and impress them details into the foam directly mate

Nicely done Mel..... Excellent tutorial.. All the best.. Happy Modelling.. :O)

Ps. Forgot to mention it happened after i put the sand/gravel onto the base and left it over night to dry.
+greg wallbridge Turn upside down and paint pva on the base, it'll warp it back right again bud ;-)

Ha! Thats so simple it's pure genius 😃 cheers.
Another good tip.
Thanks mate
nice vid mate

Cheers mate
For the algorithm. 👍
Sooooo expensive! Have you tried dap sealer and low grit sandpaper?

Haven't heard of that before, I'll definitely give that a go mate, cheers for the heads up mate.
