Another super-helpful video. As someone who's just getting back into painting after a decades-long break, your work is absolutely invaluable. Thank you.
Recently bought the army painter basing set to try some stuff out and you bring out this video! Just what I need, and I now have all the materials required!
What a great idea. You are making the hobby a better place with all your efforts War Gamer !
This is so much needed ! There are so many how to base videos but no series with such a good explanation. Looking forward to more of this series ! *how to jungle for example really interests me and many people I know, yet hard to be achieved !
Thank you so much for making this video! I have 20 minis finished in my army and of my career all the bases are normal I’m going out this weekend to get some stuff for basing!
This appears perfect! Simply cannot hold on to see more like this. Great job.
Great video. Very clear breakdown and I appreciate the mention of products used so I can see exactly what I should be looking for.
The new format works really well. Very clear instructions and I like that you referenced specific products. I’d like to see indoor si-fi bases, for a game like imperial assault
Loving the new style of video. Alot easier to follow.
I'm glad to hear it :D
Great video man! I always wanted to see how you did your cool bases
Thanks for this, this is the next step for my models and I've been putting it off lol
I am sure that it is very very helpful for beginners so please keep doing these tutorials!
Really cool tutorial simple and easy to follow
Good basics of basing vid, buddy...I always enjoy seeing how folks approach source lighting of lava bases or standing water for marshy or mud basing...appreciate all the vids you share...Jim
Lava bases! A lot of people seem to get the direction of the lava color wrong with so that might be helpful to a lot of people :D
Cool video looking forward to the next part
Thanks for the guide!
Love your guides
Very clear and helpful video.
Lovely looking bases. Thanks dude.
That's a solid name you've got there my man!
love it, very heavy metal and easy
Thanks for this video. Really useful.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video!! I would really like to see a tutorial on making autumn themed bases.
Thank you pete , huge help :)
great vid keep them coming
Awesome video! I'm glad to see how many comments you're getting and how popular your channel is becoming? I have had trouble recently with my metal miniature chipping. How do you protect your paint jobs?
Oh bruv, a face to the voice. Love your tutorials man.
Great Video!
Great video! Would love to see a tutorial using cork on the base 😀
this works like a fricking charm, 10/10
This was very helpful.
Love the videos one suggestion about the grass at the end I find if you tap it on the table straight away then re apply then repeat the grass will stand up rather than be flat. Just a thought.
Hi love the channel and videos. I would love to see advanced basing including using pigment both on the bases and the models themselves to indicate dust, muck etc. Thanks and keep up the brilliant work!
I've been playing around with pigments in my own work so that would be a good idea for a tutorial!
I really like these focused tutorials! I'd like to see a tutorial on how to use the most of your spare parts and sprues for basing ideas.
Nice Idea!
you can glue to make the sprews into a barricade
Great video! Please, make the one about white as well. I have a Forgeworld Horus model and I'd love to paint him in pre herey colours.
CHALLENGE!! Can you make a Slaanesh base concept that looks like the ground is corrupt by Slaanesh however the ground must look like the earth is morphing into flesh. This concept also has to be able to be recreated to all the different size bases.
Nice idea, I think I have some ideas. I'll maybe have to give it a go :D
I second that!
Great video, could you cover Urban basing please? Thanks
Dude the blue Peter reference got my sub
Great video! Maybe some different color schemes or how to take the base up a notch or two?
I like the new format. I'd like to see how to make swamp bases and a death world/bloody battlefield would be quite cool. A weapons team running across a muddy battlefield dodging body parts n the mud
Great video, thanks! Can I ask what little water dropper thing you're using to thin your paints?
Cool video. My basing is much simpler; I just paint the base one color and apply GW cracking paint then once it's dried I dry brush and shade.
For one of my Stormcast armies i've used Dirt straight from the garden. Then I seal it to the base with Woodland scenics Scenic cement and add some flock and tuffs. comes up surprisingly good.
Can't say I've ever tried that. I would have to give it a go.
As a guy who's just coming into the hobby, never painted or based in his life, this was very helpful. The end result for me isn't *quite* as good as what you've got there but like painting the minis theirselves, I'd guess that comes with time and practice. Thanks for the easy to follow guide, it really finishes the job on my Uruk-Hai scouts!
Yep, practice practice practice! I can't stress how important it is to keep working at new techniques. It's OK to not get them on your first try so long as so long you keep at it you will get better :D
Love to see how you would tackle a thick wet mud base
Excellent new video! I'd love to see how you would do a Martian Earth base sometime in the future.
Good pick! I would enjoy doing some Skitarii bases
Good work man, really enjoying the guide so far
Great video! A snow base tutorial would be awesome.
Something like this? ua-cam.com/video/EbSeqVnqL4Q/v-deo.htmlm34s
The War Gamer Yes exactly!
Could you show us how to do a dry, cracked, desert lake bed type of base as if it's been baking in the sun forever with no hope of rain? Thanks. And well done with the static grass.
Hey, amazing base tutorial. It was very helpfull. I have one question tho, can i just glue my mini ON the finished base? wont it be crooked etc?
Interesting and enjoyable, what about a desert base..? Thank you for sharing. ~ Will
Thanks for the video. Can you make an urban/city base? Thanks.
I enjoyed this video.
I'm a beginner and would like to ask : if you have minatures which come with their own tiny bases, do you cut the figure off this base, from the feet, in order to attach it to a slightly larger base ?
Another great video! Maybe you should do some winter basing next time :D.
Definitely!
Great tutorials. What Matt varnish do you use? Uk based. Thanks.
Ammo by Mig & AK interactive has a product called "mud" which I use on bases. It covers all terrain from Deserts to European soil. Ideal for historical figures.
Do you recommend citadel Stirland Mud and Army Painter field grass? Thanks!
You talk fast and get right to the point. WELL DONE! Some of these UA-cam videos suck the live right out of you.
Hi Pete bit late to the party but great video.
Would you recommend putting base material down first and then mounting the figure, or put in on around the figure as in video?
I like that you use a pipette to apply water. I use a brush but I can see the advantages of using a pipette
Woohoo thanks!
nice vid
Thank you!
You're welcome!
So I used gw's texture paint of Astrogranite on my necron bases but I'm not sure what to do with it now, any suggestions?
Great video, very informative. Could you do a video on how to base snow and ice with rocky and stoney areas?
Sure thing :D
Thanks man
A snow Base would be cool! And how to do the energy weapons of the custodes like in the box art. :)
Snow bases are definitely on the cards :D
Great! I can‘t wait! :)
and once your base is complete, then you glue your model to the base? or you have it all done in one?
Good share
a mine style base would be cool. something that could be used for genestealer cults or necrons
Dwarfs also ! An awesome idea indeed joshua, please go for it War Gamer !
GW, God bless 'em, struck archer skinks from their codex several years ago, and I was able to buy a bunch of really cheap, second hand, unpainted skinks to provide an army for my Reaper Swamp Hag. That being the case, I'd be interested in giving my bases a swamp/marsh look. Hopefully, it would not be totally unique to the one inch square slotta bases that came with the skinks, but could be used on a large, oval base for her Schleich Komodo Dragon, for which I'll be building a howdah, so she can ride into battle.
Thanks for the tips!
I’m not sure if I’m a fan of grass on minis at all. Scale always seems to be an issue and I do bump against it. That’s said, your explanation and tips were super easy to follow.
Do you recommend any of the GW terrain paints?
The textured ones? They're not bad, they do the job and are quick. But you can get much better results with sand and cheaper results by mixing some find sand in with some acrylic paint and PVA glue.
I like to seal the mini first before adding grass.Any varnish you use even really flat matte varnish makes the grass or flocking look foggy to me. if you dont mind that then do it after
A nurgle base would be awesome
I’d like to see the use of a Static Grass Applicator to make the grass “stand up” might increase realism!
Blob of PVA glue, use tweezers to dab static grass on that spot, shake of excess and give it a quick blow across the base, grass stands up. Easy :)
Does anyone know what type of base I should use for Drukhari kabalite warriors
Is it recommended to paint the base without having the model on it first?
Would very much to see you do a ruined urban look. Such as fighting house to house. Paras in Arnhem etc
Nice idea, ruins come in all shapes and colors so it would give some great opportunities for basing.
Hi i did your basing tips and it works great, so thanks for this. However i have a problem with matt varnish,. I painted them with velljo matt varnish but the figures have whitened out. So is there any way i can fix this please?
It's possible you've applied it a little too heavily. I know that some people have been able to fix issues like that with a coat of gloss varnish. I would test it out on a small part of the model first though.
I was not expecting the bird sand to smell as bad as it does
Does the smell go away after undercoating?
I would like to give one piece of advice. If you have a light colour for your earth/gravel base you may want to skip using a shade.
might get a static grass applicator. cos I can already see the fuse box exploding from the diy ones. tho I dont see why they are so expensive if creating one your self is so cheap.
Basing step 1: Round up all the clear basers in your area and cull them
Amen to that
I always didn't like the rainbow grass, it looks kind of unnatural to me. But overall good work and keep it up :)
what kind of matte spray varnish do you use? I've had mixed results with protective varnishes in the past but I don't want to stop using them just because I bought a bad kind or did something wrong
Testors is a very good brand, i have never had problems with it
I tend to use Army Painter Matt Varnish. Their spray can is good but needs good temperature/weather conditions to use so I tend to use their paint bottle version in an airbrush instead now.
Cork and rocky / snowy bases please!
My miniatures look so cool now
@The War Gamer, do you use Stain less steel ball bearings to make your army painter paint flow properly??
I haven't added any to my paints but a few of the Mig paints that I use have them in and they're very helpful in mixing the paint.
The War Gamer Awesome what do you do to the Army Painter ones I shake them up but they just seem to never be enough.
Maybe a Sci-Fi Base? :)
Dessert base would be good?!
Sorry to comment on such an old video, but I'm relatively new to the hobby and I'm struggling with applying static grass? I follow your technique and the result looks great up until the static grass, where it starts to look like it's sticking out at odd angles and not natural at all? do you have any advice?
So static grass fibres should repel each other which causes them to stand on end. If the grass isn't looking natural then it could be because you're using too much glue or glue that's too thick which is preventing the grass from naturally positioning itself. If you're using a water soluble glue, like pva, try thinning it out with a little water and see how you get on.
Old dog here trying to learn some new tricks. My big question for you is about sealing with the spray varnish. Suppose I'm using a rattle can, how can I properly seal the base while not over varnishing and ruining my mini? I can make a base up to this standard, but I'm struggling with the pairing of a decently painted miniature with a equally decent base.
I often varnish my models and my bases at the same time with no issues. Just make sure you apply your coats lightly and build them up over a few layers rather than just dumping out half the can. I would also recommend brush on varnishes should not wish to over spill onto your model.
Can you do a tutorial on jungle type bases for Seraphon?
I'll keep it in mind :D
Can you do a city rune base please
3:18 Using the infamous purple ork miniature for this tutorial, I see
hi where did you get the sand and gravel from please?
They are different grades of bird sand/gravel. It's dirt cheap :D
Could you change the colour of static grass with shade/wash paints eg: washing it with druchii violet to make it purple, or does that not work?
I've not tried it but I don't think it would make a huge difference. I feel that the wash would flow off the grass and not do much to alter the colour.
shame, I was thinking of using something like that to make some extra terrestrial greenery/shrubbery/whateveryawannacallit.
Add me to those asking for different environments (winter, desert, jungle, etc.). Also, would love to hear your thoughts on static grass applicators - they are SO expensive, so is it worth it? Thanks!
Greg S static grass applicators are worth it “if” you’re making lots of terrain
what about goblin green astro turf
Static grass without an applicator?
"you will need to mix in water so you have a consistency that's a little thicker than paint"
thinned paint or unthinned paint?
Please do a bolt action base
Not sure I'd leave the grass to dry before tapping it off. You're left with grass that dries flat or at unnatural angles. If you turn it upside down and give it a tap or a gentle blow, then you can get the grass to stand on end, and dry upright.
With static grass it doesn't matter too much as the 'static' effect of the nylon strands will cause them to stand up once dried.
