I've been taught playing castanet incorrectly my whole life: put the strings on the middle finger and curl all fingers to make sounds.

It's not wrong, just not how they hold it for Flamenco. If you want to dance the Jota, then the middle finger is where you put the string around.

I know the feeling , I have a very special place for my first teacher , it was almost 20 years ago now but I will never forget what I have learned. I don’t have my first castanets but they were not very good anyway , the black one I use on some of my videos was my second pair so they are 17+ years old and I still reach out for them all the time.

I never knew that there was such precision & how the fingers were used. I thought of getting a pair of castanets for my sister as a Christmas gift- however, I'm certain the posture demonstrated would not work for her. She has a lot of trouble with her shoullders, and holding the position demonstrated would be very painful. I was s excited- she loves percussive instruments of any kind.

It is possible to play in many positions
I like this posture for dancers because it helps build later on when moving the arms and playing ,but it is totally possible to play more relaxed for a musician for example .
I started playing after I couldn’t not move my fingers from a injury I sustained and playing castanets was like physiotherapy and totally helped !
I have a pair of castanets my grandpa got while in the Air Force from a dancer in France and wanted to learn how to play them. Thanks for this vid.

Amazing rhythmic patterns one can get from such a simple pair of wood pieces ... I like castanets because I like instruments I can carry around in my handbag,in case I get bored if I'm out somewhere dull and need to somehow escape it through music. It's amazing how easy it is to be rid of boring people. Just pull out your castanets,your high pitched descant recorder or kazoo or mouth organ or start practising your high soprano vocal scales slightly off key and out of tune.... They think you're insane and leave you in peace. You can then have some real fun,playing music,especially if you can find others like yourself to play with...

I had no idea they could be used like this outside of Flamenco. I need to regain soothing rhythm in my life, though perhaps now have to accept that with arthritis I will not be able to play as well. I have one set of castanets which I bought in Spain as a souvenir 14 years ago.
However I didn't even know that each pair has its own tune until watching this lesson.
It would be pleasant when I often practice my lovely castanets, recalling the Flamenco dances at a tablao in Seville.

Thank you for this very clear and informative video on playing the castanets. My wife and I play in a small local amatuer orchestra. We will be performing a 15th century classical Spanish piece and in the last week before the concert, the director asked if I could play castanets rather than the small doumbeck that we have been using until last week. Never played them before but I like a challenge. I'll try to find a decent set of castanets at a nearby music shop. I only have some fairly horrible looking kids ones. Your video/s will be a great help to me over the next week. Wish me luck. I'll need it!

I got my toddler a music set that had a castanet in it, and after following this video I can honestly say that it's such a poorly made castanet that my little dude is probably using it more correctly as a projectile than a musical instrument. :)

Francine, This is excellent. I am a lifelong percussionist, whose focus has been Afro/Caribbean and African percussion styles. I am just now picking up castanets and find this so new and different. Flamenco counting and beginning castanet technique is so very different from what I’ve been doing all my life. I will of course practice exactly as you are instructing. I want to ask your opinion though. Would you think it would be useful to adapt and practice traditional hand drumming rudiments along side the patterns you are teaching here?
That sounds lovely , thanks for the comment , I wish I could say more about your question but I don’t know .I have participated on a flamenco show before that used many different instruments as a fusion and it was AMAZING ! Even berimbau ( Brazilian instrument ) they used , so I am sure that it’s a way to make it work , having that said the musicians playing on the show , had a huge flamenco background so I believe they would have used similar styles .☺️

This is exactly what I need unfortunately the brand new ones I have are too small for me.
Bunhead Lady Melody I used to play with a small castanet as well when I started because I ordered the wrong number , is more challenging but doable ... I would recommend you keep practicing even if is not the perfect fit for your hands , if you are able to change to the correct size later will be a very easy transition 😉
Hello, Thank you for putting names to what I had been previously taught and also exercises. It has been a while since I played and danced having passed part one of spanish dance society course in London, so way out of practice. I used my castanets tonight to pay tribute to the health service and front line workers in uk, during the COVID 19 CRISIS, to clap, so heard loud and clear.
Your videos would be much clearer if your were viewed from behind. Please would you consider this as I had to keep pausing and turning the laptop around. My castanets have stayed out, so I may resume playing. Grateful thanks for beautiful video and inspiration.

Second, I have a question about fingers. I don't want to accidentally train myself to do something wrong and I understand that when striking the castanet you really want to ensure your finger is sliding off the side. However, I find my nails often will clip into the side of the castanet this way. Could you offer any advice on this? I get really good sounds when I strike the center of the castanet with the flat of my finger, but I struggle to do the slide or scratching motion and I worry that will get harder to fix as time goes on.

Thanks . I am not sure how long are your nails , but if they are long it will be a little harder , kind of the same as trying to play a guitar with longer nails . If they are already short or you are still struggling with them , I would recommend you elongate your fingers as much as possible as sliding on the castanets for the RIA. it seems like it’s obvious what I am saying but we tend to not think too much as we are doing the movement specifically if it’s fast , so try to visualize that you will stretch every finger completely and bend just a little as you are about to touch the castanets. Almost like you are reaching for something far away but retract just as you touch the castanets , that should get your fingers instead of your nails ( if they are short enough) to touch the castanets first .

Hello!! Hope you are doing fine!!! First of all, I saw 1st 2nd and 3rd part on how to play the castanets. I was interested in leraning and after i saw your videos I got my pair and started practicing. It is my third day and all I do is the part 1 and the beggining of part 2, of course not RIA yet. I have read in other comments that it will take time to master it, but I know it is definitely worth it! I would like to ask you a few questions. First of all, apart from the warm up and the ecxercises you show in your first part and of course to the second, is there anything else I can do to achieve a smooth RIA? And secondly, how much time per day would you suggest to practice? (not for professional reasons, just for fun but really cannot wait to achieve RIA....) Thank you in advance, hope you get to read this comment and answer to these questions. Wish you the best!!! (so sorry for the long comment just realized xD..)
Hi there , welcome to the channel . The first repetitive exercises will give you strength on your fingers . The alternate and 3 and 1 exercises (all from the first video) will help to ensure all your fingers connect with the castanets when playing the RIA . However to master it you have to thing like jogging .
Adding speed is the first step ! .... first you walk fast , then You have to shift to jogging after adding speed and at some point you can’t speed jogging any more so you run . Although it requires the same muscles to jog and run you have to take a leap and actually run ...RIA is the same ... only the speed won’t get you there you have to keep trying to connect the fingers even if the sound isn’t clear yet but the speed is definitely necessary . This will help to create muscle memory.
Regarding how long you should practice . it’s all relative . My students play 1.5/2 hrs a week . Not necessarily every day . Some will master the RIA in the first couple of months and some will take a longer time . But this is the minimum I would recommend you practice . The more the better

Sorry to hear about that , I also have a really small pair that I got a long time ago. Although it is possible to play on a small size it is definitely more challenging and less comfortable.
I really love Castanuelas del Sur . They have a beautiful collection and I have them for over 2 decades and they are still perfect !

Who developed those things, Ive seen those in real life and in my dream and for 23 years of my life I didnt even know why this instrument was made for and what is its use. It is crazy to think about someone someday decided to make this to play as a instrument.
That is a good question , history says it was created by the Phoenicians over 3.000 years ago .... but Spain was the country that remained using the instrument . It amuse me ...

@@vstarbuck depends on the brand if you are buying Castanuela del sur professional line I would say size 5 but the size of your hands fall in the medium line which is easy to find

When I was a child, my cousin taught me to play these and I recall just clapping them together where they clapped and bounced backsimilar to dribbling a basketball closer to the ground! It was one motion!!!!

The ones I know that bounce back are usually used by musicians not dancers , they are designed to bounce back and you just need to tap them down
I , particularly have never used one of these for dancing coz they are usually attached to something

I have very old castanets from Spain. The cords are too long and I can't seem to get them adjusted. They have little pompoms on the cord as well and I really wouldn't want to remove them. Anyone with suggestions?
I have a video that teaches how to change the cords , if they get in the way my recommendation would be to cut them but if you like the design try to keep out of the way from the palm of your hands and castanets to avoid getting it trapped but experience with long cord is that they always end up in the way somehow

I don't understand. My castanets don't make a clear single note like yours. They make a buzzing sound. I think they're too loose, but I have them super tight on my thumbs and it's not making a difference. The two halves of the shells sit too closely together. What am I doing wrong?

Hi . Thanks for watching . Warm up 5 is the alternate exercise, you repeat each set 4 times . First set fingers (1,2,5) second set fingers (2,3,5) and third set fingers (3,4,5). Só in the video I explain the fingers and then I do each set 4 times before I move to the next set , once I speed up , in the video I repeated the same thing twice
