- Dale Watts was characterized by his family as a "hoarder," and they didn't realize how amazing his collection -- dubbed FANTAST by CGC -- was until after he died. He left behind millions of collectibles, including roughly 300,000 comic books and the same number of sports cards. Some of them were extremely valuable, such as the first issue of Batman and the first Superman. Here's the story.

I think it comes down to a level of understanding what this man dealt with. Back then there wasnt as much awareness to being on the spectrum. So now with more attention brought to light about being on the spectrum , there is way more understanding. I would definitely celebrate my father and his struggles and allow others to appreciate what so many have ever seen.
Well said, Jim.
As an attorney you don't have struggle. You have a career and money, your probs are small potatoes.
Here's to hoping Dale 'FANTAST' Watts was able to meet at least one (or a few) other fellow collectors to befriend along the way while alive to discuss their shared collecting hobby🙏🙏
I would literally quit my job for a year, live of a few bucks a month, and the only thing I do is look thru this whole collection, and I would ahve the fun of my life haha
crazy stuff
Haha yes!
Wow!!! That was a holy grail collection. Sad how it tore his marriage but in the end it made his son wealthy. I loved the way Darren showed off his dad collection for us to see. These stories still get me very excited on how they can change someone life. Great job telling his story Mike.
Thanks Carlos!
The collection is worth around 70 million. That should help heal some of the old wounds.
I would absolutely celebrate my fathers collection. Show the struggles he faced and what the family faced due to his hoarding/quiet and covered collections. Celebrate his fathers life and the accomplishments he made through collecting. I want my children to know all about my collections and be proud of what I love doing!! I really enjoyed this video. This video was sent to me by a collector. I am a new subscriber!! 💙🤙🏻🔥🔥🔥
Thanks and welcome!
I inherited a collection from my father as well, just not as elaborate as this. Amazing spiderman first series 4-266, 37 copies of Thor 337, 19 copies of ASM 252, etc. This story hit home. :) Thank you.
No one needs 200 newspapers or 29 shovels...but everyone needs more cards 😊 Hoarding can be bad for all involved. Glad the son was able to do great things with it. Maybe he is doing what his dad maybe always wanted to do, but because of his condition was never able to do so. Mental issues aren't easy for anyone, but most stories have a silver lining. The labels are my favorite part of this story. This collection will live on long after all of us watching now. Another great story/video🇺🇲⚾️✌🏽
Great comment!
I truly don't know what to say, The Superman Comic made my heart skip a beat, Very nice, I just found your videos, im off on Monday's and was just bored watching UA-cam and found it, This was just great, I wouldn't sell any of it
Thanks Billy!
I would be sharing the hoard . Nothing better than spreading the love and hobby. Awesome video my friend
Right on
Amazing collection! Let this be a lesson to us all, though: PACE yourself in buying. This collection tore this man's marriage into pieces! Addiction is real and its something that should be mentioned more often.
Tell that to women who spend hordes of money on shoes that become WORTHLESS.
@@dancalmpeaceful3903 Most people simply waste their money. In fact, most people wouldn't even know where or how to invest their money. People most certainly do not associate collectibles as investments, but some of them most definitely are investments. Most people will always waste their money. That's just how it is. That's why there's always like a 1% of people who only ever financially succeed.
Am glad you talked about this on your video. Saw the news when it came out. It was sad to hear how the family was broken due to his collecting and hoarding. In the end, am so happy to hear that the son is sharing his dad’s collection to the world to acquire. This story is powerful.
Please look in to the Promise Collection, great story behind the name. It was about two brothers, and also about comic book collection.
Thanks for the tip!
Again! Love the attic and stories Mike. Keep them rolling and thanks for the awesome content
Glad you like them!
Wow I said it once and I'll say it again thank goodness for us hoarders lol. Seems that was his way of leaving a fortune that he wouldn't have been able to do for his family otherwise. All my and my wife's collection goes to our to kids but they know about it and have become collectors as well. Look what his son is doing now a lifetime dream that we all wish we were a part of. Love the story it gives me goosebumps. Share the past when ever you can.
Another great attic find friday as always Mike! Best wishes to you :)
Thanks! You too!
Crazy cool stuff. I hope my family sells my collection when I am gone and makes a mint!!
As a comic guy who also collects sports cards I gasped a couple time during this video. If I had pearls I'd be clutching them.
Hahaha
Mike,
As much as the gentleman’s collection was incredible, the pain that his family went through is unimaginable.
My heart aches for all the people involved in this situation.
Peter
Thank you for sharing! This is quite the story. I checked out the website and the trailer for the doc, looks amazing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
"Oh look I forgot I had Superman #1" 😂😂😂😳
One of the very best comic books collections Ever!
I just read about this in the Detroit free press. Was going to do a video on it but you did awesome.
Thanks!
Hello everyone, I just recently started collecting Comic Books love watching these videos hopefully one day will be able to leave a collection for my two daughters to enjoy. it’s not about the value of the book. It’s the chase that a lot of them don’t exist but they’re out there.
I just bought a raw 9.2 Star Wars 1 from Dale’s collection with certificate. When I grade it, the label will have the custom Fantast imagery
Nice!
Thank you so much for sharing this story with us!
And if it was my father my family, I'd like to believe I would do the same. To share something that was such a mystery only to be uncovered and discovered to be something so beautiful...
I would like to believe
Embarrassed??? I would have a field day in that joint, lol...
Fantastic redeeming story! Please keep filming these Attic Finds videos!
I will!
She wanted nothing to do with the collection... until she found out what it was worth. Now she sings it praises.
Love your videos! Thank you for sharing. ❤️👍
Thanks for watching!
Great story. Love this kind of videos
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow that was really a great story. The movie is in production. I subscribed so I can be notified when the movie is available.
Nice!
I was waiting for a little tear to roll down your face during this my friend this is pretty emotional shit lol
Great story. Ty!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great content and story. It's too bad it caused a split in the family but that collection is amazing and I'm glad there is a positive coming from it
You and me both!
I know you focus primarily on sport card finds....but the famous "Mile HIgh" comic collection find is amazing too....
Thanks for the tip!
Wow , how long to just go through it all.Mind blowing!!!! Thanks Mike hope you are well.
Thanks Jim, same to you
Another great story Mike.
Thanks again, Doug!
heard about this the other day. honestly im disgusted that this family is showing them off now and profiting off this. unworthy and ungrateful in my eyes
I'd sell it....but grab some of the nicest pieces for myself. I don't blame the woman for NOT wanting it.......but her lawyer was right, she should have demanded half. A great movie to watch is "Comic Book Villains"...it has a surprise ending that will entertain most of you.....
It's not the collectibles fault that it tore apart a family. It's not just Asperger's that can cause issues. Sports Card addiction is unfortunately like other addictions. It can obviously have financial issues plus affect loved ones. As a collector since 1987, I can relate to the struggle of buying too much stuff. I will be trading and or selling my newer stuff to buy vintage cards.
Sad that this tore up the family and that the dad was not really able to enjoy his collection. Money isn’t worth it if it tears apart your family. At least the son is trying to make something positive out of this.
"WOW"!!!!!THANK YOU!!!!!!😆!!!!!!!!
Love this! How should we contact you if we have a story you might consider?
Thanks! My email address is listed on my channel. Can’t type it here or UA-cam will delete my comment.
In most collections, there is a core group of highly valuable items, the remainder being commons. If he had kept the good stuff and sold the commons bulk his life could have been different. Not necessarily better, but different.
Hey, it may seem dorky or nerdy but it pays off sometimes to be into collecting this crap lol.
Great story. It’s Not the first time they’ve done that though.
Done what?
@Comic Books Galore thanks. I read that it was the first time, but as you say it may just be part of it.
I would probably keep a few things but sell off most of it.
If I stumbled upon something like this I'd probably sell most of it. I would probably do it over several years however. I sort of view collectables as relics that belong to the hobby it's self and the collectors whom own them are just stewards of said relics. So if I were to sell a collection like this off over several years I could enjoy the relics for a while & pass them on, plus I'd probably get max value that way.
Good point
Some parents hoard ceramics and vhs tapes
Some hoard comics and cards
What would you do?
It sounds like the son is making the best of the situation and a collection that had resulted in so much family pain.
Some really good lessons for a lot of us to learn while we are on our own collecting journeys.
Keep up the great work, Mike!
Thanks Jeremy!
I have a house FULL of neat stuff. Luckily my wife left 'cause she just didn't like me!
I would sell it all off and use the money for developing permanent infrastructures for homelessness in the local area
his wife sounds awful. he was not a hoarder; he was a collector. an obsessive collector, but a collector none the less. if i had these, i would not have told a soul. i would have gotten all the high end stuff graded, then just quietly sold them. well, most of them anyway
her loss for not taking half. oh well. ???????????
She would have spent it on shoes anyway.....or worse ....Avon bottles. Have mercy on me when I have to dump that shit at flea markets eventually.....
I think his wife was a vain a hole to be honest. She never respected his passion. He got the wrong girl as most people do
ua-cam.com/video/Pw15KpAN3rs/v-deo.html Interview with the son, I’m halfway through and it’s really good so far.
Thanks!
