I had the opportunity to recap the National Card Show with @collectorinvestordealer and we had a great conversation, but we definitely went off the rails a bit.

It only took me three sittings to watch this, but I really enjoyed it. I like your collaborations as much as I like your solo stuff. Two of my favorite channels.
Glad you enjoyed it, Ken!
What do I like to do when I'm the god of baseball collectors? I like to look at some baseball cards! Great video guys!
I love hearing that there was "too much vintage" at the National because I hardly see any vintage at shows out here where I am. It is almost all modern, like seriously 95%. It sucks because I am a vintage guy.
Nice video. I like the off the rails stuff sometimes because it's like a normal conversation with someone else who likes the hobby. Interesting comment about only 1 junk wax era pickup - Barry. It seems that no matter what profession (or serious hobby) a person is in, as time goes along the ones that have successfully been doing it a while migrate toward the less controversial areas, looking for stability, growth, enjoyment. I'm a lawyer and that sweet spot place for an office to be is after years of fighting with everyone, is to be stable, no drama, as little stress as possible. Seems like professions and hobbies all trend toward that direction over time for those involved.
Good comment
@@JunkWaxHero Thanks. It's interesting to me that when we talk about markets there are 'barriers to entry.' Whether that be investment capital, licensure, or whatever barrier there is. But the barrier to entry to get to the peaceful side of collecting is patience. Or unlimited resources, of course. But patience is a high barrier of entry IMO. It kind of like hockey when someone commits a penalty the refs just let someone on the other team clobber the offender. Self monitoring rules. Collecting has self monitoring. And that self monitoring is also patience. It's much hard to have and harder to keep. So there is a high barrier of entry (patience) and a self monitoring system once you get there - continued patience IMO.
Very cool. The best 1-2 combo when it comes to talking cards and life in general.
@@SeemsLow thank you!
I was there Friday for my first National and was pretty disappointed mostly because of the crowds, long food and bathroom lines and really bad wifi. I picked up three vintage cards but didn’t find any great deals.
I like when people go off the rails with the topic as it is more relatable to us that aren’t dealers/youtubers and we can relate that this could be a thing that we can do. Sometimes it is just those simple experiences that you have can connect the audience. We all have that one name or picture that we can recall like it happened yesterday but we can not remember where we just put that darn tv remote. 😂 keep up the great content/conversations with the other collectors in the hobby !
Have been a fan of both of these fellas for a while...Chris just gained some ups though. I grew up in Baltimore... wanting to be ss for the Os!!?? THATS awesome. The Orioles and the Cubs are still my favorite baseball teams.
So you may remember me mentioning that dad was a dealer during the junknwax era. He had a lcs & mom ran the store on the weekend while dad hit the show circuit. As a kid I sometimes would get a corner of dads table doing something that was common at the time the dice game. I still can't believe promoters allowed it, but you'd roll maybe 3 dice & add them together so 3 & 18 would be a high value card where the more average rolls would be slightly lesser value than the cost. I suppose in a way it was the precursor to breaks. Dad was the cliche old conger shop owner whom had good stuff, but smoked 3 packs a day & hated dealing with kids. 🤣🤣
Sounds like a fun memory
Great Video and nice tangents. Your playing days Baseball talk was awesome. To make both feel better, last year my 12 year son did not have official AB until 4th game of season. Had 14 Plate Appearance 4 walks and 10 HBPs. That boy was bruised up but never backed out.
Good for him!
Unlike basketball or baseball when you're a football players your last time you'll play the sport is whatever level you make it. The mop up time at michigan tech was the last time I'll ever play football. It sounds sad, but it's sort of what made it special
Good morning guys. I always enjoy watching you both. I have bought some cards off of Chris at the Chantilly show. The vintage at the National was awesome. There were so many dealers selling vintage. I was able to pick up several nice cards on my buying list. Great video. Thank you both.
That is awesome!
Chris sold cards and lemonade at the same time lol. Repacks were called grab bags if I recall, had them at the local card shop. Great show fellas
I find bundling to be effective when you are buying a big card. They want to make the big sale and you can do well on the smaller cards you are buying with it. I definitely come out ahead with that strategy. Had the same feeling as you had on large cash. This National was the most I ever brought to the show but I was still small time - shared your felling about being nervous with the cash but then laughed at myself.
@@Brad-mj3tg good point about bundling for big cards
Loved this episode.
Would love to have a beer with you guys. I could teach you about Bradman and Australian football cards.
And you could teach me about everything else 🤣
Two of my favorite UA-camrs, great conversation and humor! I see a new channel in the future...Mike-Vintage Card Hero.
@@doug_sports_collector thanks Doug!
Enjoyed the convo gentlemen, thank you for posting
16:55 Backpack is where it’s at. You can keep your cards safe and also keep snacks, beverages, toiletries, spare clothes, etc. lol. Always be prepared!
Exactly!
I wonder is there is a market for a rolling card cart with a seat. A version of what disc golfers use.
Great conversation, lads.
Hope you both have a crackin' weekend (and to all viewers). 👍
Enjoy the conversation guys! Great to meet you both! Thanks guys
You too!
Great video, enjoyed both the national talk and the childhood athletics stuff. The two of you seem to colab together well.
24:35 that was me when I met Chris and Mike M 🤩 I didn’t know what to say after the initial greeting so I asked Chris if he wanted to buy some cards (still regret not giving him a better price), and for Mike I just dipped so quickly that I didn’t shake his friends hand 😂
Let’s face it, we watch you guys more than our favorite actors these days, you are larger than life in some regards.
Sam, did we meet at the National?? I thought we didn’t get a chance to? Did you tell me your name?
@@JunkWaxHero no, we didn’t. I was referring to Mike Moynihan (didn’t know how to spell his last name, so I just the M lol)
@@JunkWaxHero and after hearing Chris, I probably walked right passed you and didn’t recognize you because of the hat. Although, I was glued to the tables since I had limited time and cards I was chasing.
@@sammyhill93 oh I missed the M there. Yeah I definitely would’ve remembered meeting you. There are certain commenters I wouldn’t forget.
I so wanted chris to say star stuck, I am the star. 🤣🤣
We need the next thumbnail to be you posing like Wilt with a hand written “40” sign. I peaked freshman year when I blocked future NBA player OJ Mayo’s dunk attempt in an AAU tournament
That’s awesome!
Good Morning Gentlemen, Great Video, 2 of my Best UA-camrs,curious question how much does the National charge per table?Great Pick-ups Mike.❤
I’ve said it before. You guys are always great together. Great chemistry!
Thanks again!
Quality 👍 ❤ super fun hearing your stories. It resonated with my own experience, to a degree.
Ricky Honeycutt, was my best friend in 4th grade and that mofo plunked me every time I batted in practice, lol. Switched to soccer after that season. Great episode.
@@yardog7 hahaha great story
Thanks for sharing your perspectives on the show. Great job you two
It was great to meet you both in Cleveland. I would volunteer to keep score/run the sweat mop at the YT basketball game
You’re in!
"Same time tomorrow" - For the record, I would listen to you guys talk cards everyday if you made this a podcast. Just sayin'. Great stuff!
Thanks Jake!
Wow! You got some Bangerz there!! Congratulations.
I would say Don Bradman, is the 2nd best after Jiminy Cricket.
lol
thanks guys great hearing about your athletic careers that was fun
How was the supply of 90s cards? high end inserts or just cool cards from mid/late 90s?
Pretty low
Mike: You don’t look 6’ 2” on your channel. Good to know😂. Good video.
@@captaincopter2387 I was told that so many times at the national!
I saw 12 year old kids with more cask than me
Yeah a lot of that going on. I don't know how though
Good stuff
Great conversation, congrats on your pickups
Great video
I spend almost the entire show all 5 days sitting at bargain boxes.
I hope you got some good finds!
Really enjoyed the conversation!
we need a JWH goat yoga clearing the bases episode!
@@collegehoopsguy lol never
Im from Australia and there is no way anyone is catching Bradman!!
@@dominatorbooze8381 yeah I didn’t mean catch him, but come to a closer 2nd eventually
I was hoping Chris was going to get a Griffey neck tattoo at the national.
Maybe Ripken!
Great video mike
A lot OF PEOPLE HAVE SAID THE PRICING WAS REALLY HIGH N DEALERS WERE HARD TO WORK WITH.
THE perfect reflection the hobby Mike. You sold a 89’ UD Griffey for $75 in 1989. Now there worth a whopping $75 after eBay fees and shipping or $95 if you’re the buyer.
IF Griffeys supposedly “most prominent card of all time/ baseballs picture card” didn’t appreciate in the last 25 years…
With EVERYONE talking about that card likes it a messiah. Being on every video and discussed religiously…
Why the F isn’t everything else going to 0?
If Griffey’s most iconic cars didn’t appreciate in 25 years then what exactly are we doing here?
Serious debate
@@TJCloutier because there are SO MANY of them available, which wasn’t known back then. And grading wasn’t available back then, so mine looked really clean and fetched a premium.
@@JunkWaxHero understandable with the pop count Mike but in contrast you had Griffey’s entire career to tune into and project on that $75 price… I do not believe the pricing within the industry is accurate. Maybe the Griffey rookie is where it should be but everything else isn’t in contrast to me. There’s more depreciation to come… there hasn’t been hype since downtowns and kabooms were introduced and now there being beat like a dead horse
23:20 Chris almost spoiled another video for Mike!! 😂 He’s almost worse than Tom Holland (MCU fans will get it lol)
Ten years from now when you talk about your youth basketball career it will be a 50 point game.
@@DansVintageBaseballPC lol it’s always been 40 and always will be
What is Troy’s UA-cam channel?
Trike415
What is the name of the UA-camr you referenced?
Trike415 Sports Cards. I’ve seen a few of his videos, but I enjoy Mike & Chris’s channels more.
Based on UA-cam videos, the success for the most part comes in the personalities and there are some UA-camrs you get the sense they are ego filled and are just unlikeable. Trike seems cool, as you folks do. I played a ton of basketball in my life and one player compared me to former Knicks guard Chris Childs and I am not sure if that was an insult or not. I retired because of age and I know if I made a return to the court, I know I will hurt myself something awful. I was scared of hitting too and when I was a kid, my goal was to be a baseball scout or G.M and wrote fan letters to scouts and G.M's.
I wouldn’t be offended to be compared to any NBA player! In college I was told I had a Tim Hardaway crossover and I’m still proud of that.
I have to disagree with Chris. I don’t believe that Barry Sanders was junk wax. 89 Score football was $15.00 a pack. You can call it “junk wax era”, but not “junk wax”…….
@@TheBargainBoxer a lot of things were expensive at the time, but in retrospect we discovered that they were mass-produced
Anyone who thinks 89 Score is junk wax, I will buy all their 89 score from them at junk wax prices. 🤣
@@DarinsCards I’m not a football guy so I really don’t know
@@DarinsCards You got that right!!!!!
@@DarinsCards I have an 89 Score Barry Sanders too, so this is good to know for future reference. Making a note. *Not Junk Wax era card*
My backpack had my work laptop
Enjoyed the conversation. Thanks guys.
