  • A new PBS documentary series, "The U.S. and the Holocaust," examines how United States policy was not always an open door for Jews in Europe who sought to flee Nazi persecution before and during World War II. Correspondent Susan Spencer talks with documentary filmmakers Ken Burns, Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein about the ways in which America failed - politically and institutionally - during a seismic humanitarian catastrophe.

@@bigonprivacy2708 Yeah, it's France and Britain's fault for not letting Germany take Poland scot-free.
Actually, they should have acted in concert after the fall of Czechoslovakia, and possibly, as far back as the Rhineland, in 1936.
It's Too BAD they weren't better prepared for War. If the French had mass-produced the Detwoine-520 (400 mph Fighter plane) and at least dug 100,000 foxholes (with troops in them) across from the Ardennes, we may not have HAD this Tragedy in the FIRST place. The British and French already had pretty good tanks, BTW, that good hold their own against the early generation of Panzers. They were not used effectively in concert, however, and there was no radio communication between them. They should have read Guderian's book, and taken it to Memory.
Similarly, if America had scattered it's Pacific Battleship fleet (obsolete as it WAS) and had about 500 P-40 Fighters (already combat-proven by the Flying Tigers) fueled and ready at Pearl, with about ten percent patrolling the skies, we could have schooled the IJN on Day ONE. MacArthur was jumping up and down in the Philippines, all through 1941, saying that he needed more aircraft, tanks and warships. He went unheeded. And, after we were defanged and declawed in Hawaii, the rest just fell like dominoes.
The French instead had a 250 mph Fighter-which was a JOKE by 1940, and WE had a few hundred P-36s at Pearl, many with NO guns, and no fuel in their tanks. In both Pearl Harbor, and the Philippines, many planes were destroyed on the ground.
Even at Midway, six months later, the American torpedo planes were a failure. Fortunately, the Dive Bombers prevailed. And, speaking of torpedoes, they used an unsatisfactory proximity fuze until about mid-1943. No less a luminary than Einstein warned the US Navy about that fuze, but, then, what did HE know about Physics??

I think your Dad did a very brave and selfless thing to enlist in WWII. But that does not change the actions of our country before we got into the war. European countries were pleading for us to join the war and assist them for 2 years before we entered the war. We only entered because Pearl Harbor was attacked. Yes, we did help bring the end to WWII and saved many lives, which we were thanked for at the time and for many years since. I think you need to separate the facts of our country's denial of Jewish refugees with your father's participation in the Allied Forces defeat of Germany. They both happened and that is the truth. A country and it's people can make horrible decisions that cost thousands of lives and then 2 years later put their lives on the line to end the atrocities. It is human nature that we can be both cruel and selfless, hateful and loving. Your father was selfless and caring, and for that so many should give him our heartfelt thanks.

The same thing has happened throughout the Arab world. Most Christians in Israel are and have been Arabs. During the 1970's an increase in Muslim extremism started to take hold in most Muslim-majority countries and countries with a sizeable Muslim population. Look up pictures of Iran, Afghanistan, and Egypt before the 70's. You will notice that most people are dressed like westerners , especially women. There was university education for both genders. Lebanon was mostly a Christian country. Iraq and Syria had huge Christian minority populations that practiced their faith openly. There were many Israeli Arab cities with majority Christian populations, especially areas with Christian history. From the 70's this all changed. In Lebanon, there was a Muslim takeover after civil war to get control of the country. Afghanistan and Iran became extremist Islamic states. Iraq and Syria lost most of their Christian remnant when ISIS took power a few years ago. In Egypt, there is still persecution, and Christians are still leaving when they can. In Israel, most formerly Christian or Christian-majority Arab towns are now Muslim or Muslim-controlled. Christians are discriminated against by Muslim Arabs except for in the few areas were they are still in the majority and hold local political power. In the city of Haifa, there are some neighborhoods where you are more likely to find an Arab church than a synagogue or mosque.

Israel has more Christians than some other counties in the region, and Christians in Israel have more religious freedom that others in the Middle East. In most Middle Eastern countries, conversions to Christianity aren't recognized, churches can't be built or repaired, and Christians are subject to hate-based acts of violence with little to no consequences for the attacker. In Israel, there are many churches; most are Arab Armenian, or Russian depending on the area. Please look it up.
I never mentioned Saudia Arabia, as there hasn't been a Christian community there since the first rise of Islam, as Christians were conquered, converted, or went elsewhere. On Iran, a large part of the Christian population did leave as a result of the revolution. The population growth is among those who didn't leave and corresponds to conditions being better in general in the country, but the number is still less than the total number there before the revolution. The current accepted number isn't even quite correct, as there is an underground of Christians who converted from Islam but can't come out as such as it wouldn't be recognized and they would be punished for apostasy. Most of the Christian population decline in Israel has been through emigration of Christian Arabs and conversion to Islam. Some is also from Russian immigrants with Jewish ancestry officially converting to Judaism. There is history, statistical data and journalism to back up every thing else I said. I didn't make it up.

My Late Dad, and myself, are realistic about what FDR could and could NOT do. The Great Depression was Alive and Well until about 1941 in America, when the Lend/Lease plan began employing millions of Americans in the War Industries. If he had let in millions of people, the Unions would have KILLED his chances in the 1940 Election!
He, BTW, was a German Jew. His parents and him made it to Portland, Oregon, from Germany, in the nick of time-in 1939. They had a sponsor. He fought in Italy at age 18, obtaining a Bronze Star, and translated at the Nuremberg trials. He later became a prominent scientist.
My Maternal Grandparents emigrated from Muncasz/Barbova, Hungary (now in Western Ukraine) in the Interwar period, and had my Late Mother in the 1920s. There were MANY left behind. Those were BIG Chasidic families. When Hitler invaded Hungary, in 1943 (for negotiating surrender with Stalin) they were All cattle-hauled to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Many were killed on arrival. Maybe six to eight people survived the War, in Poor condition, and, obviously, with PTSD. Most were able to emigrate to the US at that point, but a few settled in Israel.
Hitler actually did NOT prevent Austrian, German or Czech Jews from leaving their respective homelands. The Nazis were glad for "Undesirable" groups to be gone. But, when the routes of escape were cut off due to War, (after the Invasion of Poland, and France and UK declaring War on Germany) there was no longer a way Out.

Part of my family came to the U.S. from Norway around the time of the first World War. My wife is a naturalized citizen from Brazil. Family members of mine served our country in the Second World War. I am here by virtue of the grace of this country and the opportunity she has afforded the immigrant. I am so sick of people denigrating our country and the sacrifices of our previous generations. False intellectuals love to look at things from their "modern perspective" without any regard for the lives lived and lost in that time period. It is intellectually lazy and self-serving, virtue signaling to act like every aspect of our historical past could have been done differently because you think you know better. Attitudes like this literally destroy the legacy of every human being who lived, fought, suffered and died so that we can all live in the safe, warm confines of our modern existence. No human being is perfect and no past can be either, but people like this are literally dumping on all of us by way of our historical ancestry for their own intellectual high ground. If you don't believe me then pause for a moment and consider that this is being debated by people with more access to knowledge, medical advancements, technology and creature comfort than ever before in human history. That we have not yet been plunged into the darkness of authoritarianism is enough for me to withhold judges, and just say 'thank you' to the generations past which facilitated my good life in my great country.

If only we knew the full extent what was going on in Europe at that time. The U.S. should have done more when Jewish people wanted to come to the U.S, I read that the Franks tried to immigrate to the U.S. at that time. If only, Anne Frank and her family would have been alive today. Then again, on the bad side though, we wouldn't have had her perspective of the war, etc without her death.

Over the years, in watching various films, documentaries and exhibits regarding the Holocaust, it is clear that more could have been done to assist the Jewish people of Europe during the 1930s. No one should dispute that. But I suppose if there is one lingering question that comes up over and over again whenever we see or hear about atrocities happening throughout the world in places such as Rwanda, Syria, Bosnia, Kosovo or the Middle East, that question is, how much can and should the United States assist in these areas? Should the United States be the world's policeman in handling international conflicts? Perhaps each conflict and each atrocity needs to be looked at on a case by case basis, but it seems to me that even when an armed conflict rises up in the world, even if it has nothing at all to do directly with the U.S., many throughout the world will still point to the U.S. and say, "Okay, what are the Americans going to do about this?"

    • @janetpattison8474
      @janetpattison8474 Рік тому

Hmmm. Very different issues…. Genocide, of millions of Jews, vs military conflict. They are completely different things. What we do in the US, or what we don’t do, is most often all about the money. Can the rich get richer if we get involved? Who are the political players? Russia? China? Are we competing with them? Why were we in Vietnam? The US only needed to open its doors to a group who were being murdered by the the German ppl and the world knew it. The US acted out of its own anti-Semitic biases. I married in 1969 & EVEN then there was an exclusive club in NY that did NOT ALLOW Jews. (I married into a Jewish family.) why did we spend trillions on the Iraq War, yet do not go to the aid of the Ukraine? It’s ALL about the money. Plus, who paid for the Germans to pull off the Holocaust? there’s a big book on the topic, was it Henry Ford, and the Catholic Church, among others? The world needs a scapegoat and it’s been the Jews for a long long time.
