  • In this video, we look at using the Brainworx Masterdesk plugin to master a song in UA LUNA. The difference between Universal Audios LUNA and other DAW's is the fantastic NEVE summing engine. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    The Neve Summing ....really does make the difference!

      I just bought a pack of plugins and it included Neve summing. At first I sort of regretted it because I was skeptical summing really did much. But I'm now looking forward to using this.

    Thanks for this wonderful and informative content you are bringing to the Lunavers.
    I have had the Masterdesk for a long time, but never seen a so effective run down of the unit. Keep up the good work! :)

      @@TheStudioRats Yes all true but Eric, "but never seen"? Shouldn't it be "But I have never seen"? Errors like this can lead to a poor mix? :) Cheers.
      By the way now I want the Master Desk. I'm sure it is pricey. Oh well, we asked for it when we went down the UAD rabbit hole I guess.

    Great Video! This Neve summing is really something. Maybe a stupid a question, but would be very interested to have your thought... as it looks like the Neve has the same set up on every Buses, why not putting it on the Main Output channel? Does it make a difference for you? I see you don't insert it on the Main, but only on the bus. The question behind is , as most of the people starting using Luna, we are still in between with another DAW, and honestly there is some cool new features on It, but also some few features still missing to work 100% only with it ( I mean each cases are different for sure) Which is absolutely normal for a V1. After spending sometimes on it, in my own personal case, the only big first reason I want to process stuff in Luna is that Neve! So does it make sense to import all the Audio from another DAW and create buses to apply Neve instead to import a Pre Master and get it on the Main Output only? ( its a time management question lol) .Thank you! and Congrats for your content.

      @@TheStudioRats Awesome, I just tried with 1 single track. Neve on Bus (-0.1db) & on main. First thing , Neve on main has a very little change impact if the Bus is muted... You need to unmute the Bus and keep the Neve still "out" on the bus , to hear a big difference, and right away it makes audio Peak and Vu meter goes to red. ...if you mute the main Neve and open it on bus, the signal is pushed but more controlled about the peak level. Also Both Neve "out" and Bus unmuted make the sound different. A bit confusing... Anyway very curious about your thought.

    This is a great video! 😎👌🏼But I believe the foundation dial is a kind of tilt eq, when you increase it you're attenuation the bass, right?

    Hey again Paul, I’m looking for a good mic 🎤 for a tenor male RnB soul vocal. Which one ☝️ of these 5 would you suggest? Or if you know of one ☝️ better than what’s on my list I would appreciate it... 1. Neumann TLM 103
    2. Rode NT1
    3. Lauten Atlantis
    4. Austrian OC18
    5. Blue Baby Bottle

    • @TheStudioRats
      @TheStudioRats  4 роки тому +1

      All good mics quite a variety of prices, my last choice would be the nt1. I’ve used a TLM103 with really good results and Blue make great mics. If I were you, I would choose the Neumann.

      Hey Luca, yes you can create a bus without summing, just take the summing off in the choice. No piano roll as such just expand the track and you’ll be able to able to see the notes.

    good morning my friend I have another question to ask yesterday I was recording audio tracks an electric guitar when I used a console it was enough to insert an amplifier in the insert and then always a compressor in the insert and reverb for example. If I do the same thing with the moon, strange and unheard sounds come out. I noticed that if on the moon in the audio track I only insert an amplifier and then insert the modulation effects in the bus everything works perfectly so I was wondering I have to create a bus every time I cannot add the effects in the insert to the audio track after the amplifier as it does it in the uad console? Thanks again for the excellent work you are doing and happy Easter at this particular moment greetings from Italy

    • @TheStudioRats
      @TheStudioRats  4 роки тому +1

      luca maggio hi Luca. The translation is a little hard to understand but I’ll do my best to answer. In LUNA insert an amp in the unison slot. You then get record effects, you can put up to 4 effects in these slots but the get recorded to the take. You should be able to use your inserts as long as the insert is a universal audio effect. You can also isolate your tracks in console so LUNA is in charge. It’s a little hard to explain over text so I’ll do a video soon for you.

    What do you think about the Shadow Hills Mastering compressor? Wouldn’t it be preferable in conjunction with a nice EQ like Manley Massive Passive ? Do you think it would give better results?

    • @TheStudioRats
      @TheStudioRats  4 роки тому +2

      The shadow hills is really good but it’s not a limiter. The shadow hills and an eq and a limiter will do the jib.

      The Studio Rats ...yes sure I realise that, I always add one at the end of the signal chain (I guess I take this for granted) and maybe some other stuff, I was just wondering if the masterdesk would be able to do as good of a job as a hi end plugin mastering chain. I know that these guys from Masterworx also developed the Shadow Hills and was wondering if I could kill many birds with one stone or would that be naive in my part? I would be curious as to what Mastering chain of plugins you would recommend (especially with UAD plugins). I would say the two I mentioned, with maybe a vertigo or a fatso to give a little colouration , Ampex or waves Krammer master tape and a waves limiter?

  • @TWEAKER01

    Yet again louder = "better" but is it, really? If truly happy with your mix the mastering stage won't involve or need that much treatment.
    Mix it so that you love it. Get away from it. Then return fresh for mastering (or someone else's more objective ears). Mixing and mastering are different types of listening. *Nail the mix first* (minus limiting/clipping).

    The tape emulation, integration with the interfaces, and the summing is everything. I'm actually considering switching for that reason. But damnit i need control surface support haha

    • @TheStudioRats
      @TheStudioRats  3 роки тому +3

      The sonic difference of using the tape emulation and the console is worth the switch.
