This video is so important. I can't believe it was an "almost wasn't" video. Just started my masters at 37 while working full time. I am now in my groove and feeling positive. This vid made me realise that I am not crazy when I start to feel stressed. Thank you Xica :)
So excited for you!! Are you nervous? I know the workload in graduate school can be intimidating depending on your major. I personally had 20+ paged syllabi lol but I managed to project plan everything in a way that gave me peace of mind :)
Thank you so much for this video. I started graduate school yesterday at Georgetown and I am already so overwhelmed. I needed something positive to watch.
Thank you! I start my grad program for public health next month and have to stay working full time. Thankfully my boss is able to move me to a shorter shift and start earlier in the day on the days I have class. Thanks for the tips!!!
This video is 7 years old but DO I CARE?! Lmao NO! I just got accepted into Grad School and I am nervous do you hear me?! But, you’ve helped ease my mind by saying “it’s doable” - I do have support at home. Undergrad I had to get up 5am and get all my work done and occasionally after work - my job is a 12-8:30 situation which is good and bad. But that routine saved my LIFE - didn’t mean I didn’t feel crazy but I felt amazing having projects submitted earlier. These are solid steps. THANK YOU for this encouragement.
Much Appreciated Advice... I am experiencing everything you said. I did start my graduate program in September but I had to take a break because I got so overwhelmed. I will be starting back at the end of January with a more realistic approach.
This video was very inspirational because I do want to get my MA in Counseling I want to go to graduate school. Thank you so much for the upload of this video. I'm going to name a few steps that I like from the video.1 Organization 2 Cohort buddy 3. Time Management Skills 4. Realistic 5 End Goal. I think that I can implement those goals in plan of study for my graduate school.
Great video! Starting my master’s in social work soon and I need all the tips I can get because I am already feeling so overwhelmed getting my bachelors right now with a family and working full-time 😭
Thank you sooo much! I’ve been out of school for over 5 years now and I will be starting a graduate program this Fall. I’m excited, yet nervous. This was great information. I’m sure I’ll be watching this video a few more times.
Wow congratulations!! What's your major? Also I would recommend organizing your syllabi in a way that allows you to project plan your assignments! This will save you time AND help you maintain your desired GPA! :) that's what worked for me. I was able to get my Masters in 1 year.
My buddy is an upperclassmen, we do not have the same work ethic, she struggles with severe depression, but I also have a different ability and I love her just having someone who you can talk to who is not a fremeny, and is supportive and happy for me and gives me suggestions and resources to succeed and is always willing to listen about my life makes all the difference even if we have different work ethics
I watched 3 videos before this one and let me tell you, yours is the best. This was incredibly helpful. Especially the first tip about the friend. That is so wise. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!
Thank you for this! Starting the spring semester next week, and the idea of knowing how busy it will be is already stirring up some anxiety for me 😅 You're video was very helpful though 🌻
Congratulations!! That's an amazing milestone, so happy for you :) grad school is challenging but it's so worth it. The most important thing is time management, organization, and planning. I've learned so much while I was getting my Master's! Let me know if you want any tips!
Thanks for the advice. I just started a new graduate program last week. I am excited but I do feel overwhelmed when I look at the syllabi. I have been researching ways to read efficiently since it is impossible to read every single word and page. I also work full-time job as well and I am trying to find that balance with being enrolled in my program part time. I am going to be using my schools academic support center to help me develop some study strategies and to help me improve my writing.
I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! I find that if I really dissect my assignments beforehand, it gives me a better idea of how to attack the reading. In addition, you'll find that the text styles vary. Some readings are just dense and you have to read through them EXTREMELY CLOSELY, while some you can focus on headings or chapter summaries. If you haven't, set up a schedule for yourself. Find sacred times to read. The thing that helps me the most, purposeful highlighting. I write notes like "quote this" or "like in my school" next to certain highlights so that I'm not blindly searching through texts for important information. Don't be surprised if this becomes a new blog/video! Good luck!
Very encouraging and helpful! I’m in the early stages of researching doctoral programs and have been worried about balancing working full time and going to school part time. Thank you for your insight and positivity!
This is the fifth video I've checked out this week for grad school advice, as I head back in for a new semester. It's also the only one that gave concrete, useful advice! Thanks so much, I'll be checking out your other content.
Thank you so much ! May I ask? How many courses did you take/hours did you work a week? I'm a FT teacher, working 35 hours a week in school ... sometimes extra things come up of course and I have to prep outside of school-hours (I looked up your BLOG and realized you are an educator also!) I am starting FT GRAD courses this fall as well. 3 classes. The degree is in the same subject I currently teach. I am 29, married but no kids yet, I am NOT much of a socializer at all outside of work and my husband is a Pre-Dental student so is studying all day himself. I feel now is the time I need to do this before those things change. My husband and I could end up anywhere in 2 years (any Dental school my husband is admitted into we will go to, be that 50 or 1,000+ miles away) and I want a child soon too. I took 8 classes my last semester of my undergrad degree and was on the Dean's list. I've been looking up videos because when I tell my co-workers my plan they all give me this face and say "Are you sure? That's a lot" Your video has given me a lot of encouragement. Thank you !
Each semester I take two 8-week courses that run one at a time, so at any given time, I am only taking one course. The program is accelerated though, so there are no summers off or spring breaks. My work schedule is fairly similar to yours. The key to success is really managing your time. Once you create a schedule and stick to it, you'll find yourself in a routine and things will smooth out. There will be challenging moments, but you'll get through! Good luck!
i am doing my masters in queens University belfast human rights law dream job is the international criminal court even dreamed of starting my own human rights NGo
Married w kids pursuing a second bachelor's....my wife supports me and knows it'll be a grind I'm just wondering if my brain can operate efficiently lol
😂 relatable! My assignments used to overwhelm me too! It took me awhile to figure it out honestly, but I'm so glad I never gave up. I realized that all I had to do was project plan, manage my time effectively, and organize my syllabi! It changed everything for me!
@@TheGrayAreaa Makes sense lol. I just graduated with my MSW and with honors! Something I thought I could never do. Now I've made it my mission to help undergraduate and graduate students achieve their desired GPA :) let me know if you need some help along the way!
this video was very helpful, thank you! I have a question that relates to my position right now. I graduated with my undergrad a couple months ago and have been working a part-time job and an internship. I want to get my masters as soon as possible but my loans from my undergrad studies are starting to kick in and although I want to find a full time job to pay off my loans and save some money I don't want the time I put into my career to be wasted if I choose to be a full-time student after a year or so. Are there ways of working and studying part-time and still getting your MBA in under 3 or so years or working part-time and being a full time student in a way that is cost-effective? It sucks that money plays such a large role in this equation and I don't want to feel overworked and have my studies, personal life, and work life compromised because of that. I'm also a competitive amateur boxer with a full time training regiment, I plan on working out everyday even if it means not going to the gym and doing it at home. Although this is an extremely stressful time for me my resiliency is being tested and I'll come out stronger and more prepared for life's challenges.
Whew! That’s a lot to consider! I would suggest finding a University that offers a more flexible program and places everyone in cohorts. Although I’ve constantly been enrolled school, we only take two courses per semester, and each course is 8-weeks. As a result, I’m only focusing on one class at a time, which allows me to focus on other things in my life and not become overwhelmed. I hope this helps, good luck!
i want to ask for an advice for my current situation im currently studying for Masters in Computer Science in a University at Malaysia. i was offered a position as a web programmer in a company 3 weeks after my enrollment currently,my situation has gotten worse. During my job,i cant focus on doing my work as a programmer at the company as assignment started to fill up my heads. And my assignment is really hard since they require a full completed program/software as an assignment. Im the kind of person who are able to do work/assignment properly when inspired and motivated.During my degree years,i was able to handle the assignment perfectly well with assignment send up early and the quality of work is quite good but now,im actually behind schedule of 2 programming assignment that are to be completed within 1 week and im actually starting to panicking in the workplace because i keep thinking how i can do this assignment in time. When i arrive home,i could do the assignment given but a very low quality work if it is rushed. i tried the whole Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after work hours to completed it but still not yet finish i dont know Should i go and send un-quality work of mine to the Professors?or should i quit my job and focus on finishing my Masters?
Hi NAM1, when I read your comment, I felt like it’s my writing since my situation now is quite similar to yours. You wrote this comment 1 year ago, could you tell me how you deal with this, what you chose, work or study, how you managed time, the result? please. cause now I’m starting Graduate school with full time job in the day and I feel overwhelmed. I really want to listen to your experience.

Awesome😄. I wish you the best in all you are doing😄.
I’m currently going to get my MSW in the Fall and working as a kindergarten teacher 😭 I just don’t know how I’ll be able to do this
Project planning is key! It's what helped me graduate with honors twice (2020 and 2021). It honestly made my Master's a breeze! :)
This helped me a lot. I was taking early morning high school classes while working and going to hair school, you saved me.
