One of the best Engine pulling apart videos ive ever seen the detail is off the radar, fair play too you sir you know what your talking about. 10/10 Cant wait to see the rebuild & it running once again
Brilliant upload, no abuse here... you are exceptional with content and Ricky being meticulous makes the channel all the better. Your knowledge of engines, simply wow.
‘Twas the Tuesday before Christmas and all through the shop. The talk was of botched jobs and a block for the chop! A rebore that fitted a massive top hat. The cost to replace - 3.5k plus VAT! As the strip down continued o’er the season of good will. The parts that were damaged gave me such a deep chill. If I owned the motor I’d surely be pissed. Dear Santa please sit back - I’ve got a huge list! Attention to detail was sadly so lacking. So RE Performance they now get my backing. If a job is worth doing. It’s worth doing well. And this vid is the proof of a rebuild from hell! I’m amazed as I watch and I’m really so glad. I’ve never experienced a job done so bad. So it’s now getting sorted by a guy whose no fool. He knows how to handle a cool Snap-On’ tool! So what if old Snap-On don’t sponsor RE. Who knows what will happen next year - wait and see! But for now let me say as I sit with my beer. Thank you for the content - Have a Happy New Year!
Same here, and even I would likely not make the mistakes that have been pointed out if I had my first go at building a 5 pot - insane that someone has charged money for this absolute bodge job
New to the channel and massively impressed with the level and scope of your knowledge . There’s blokes in the pub reminiscing their teens early 20’s / discussing the best way they found to stop A series engines leaking everything at the first hint of a frost…….then there’s fellas like you out of this world clever with most things mechanical. The way you must retain information is mind blowing … it must be by the way you seamlessly go between cars and bikes and just do what needs doing without drama (ok with good editing assisting the omission of the occasional melt down) admittedly not a bike bloke …. One leg dictates - or at least makes me prefer, a nice safe metal box all round me. But watching you work reminds me what kind of technician I dreamt of being whilst incompetently changing the plugs oil and filter on a maestro. Then like most, I grew up - realised how useless I actually was and left it to those who can. Watching you examine the efforts of others and highlight errors in their work is fantastic and only makes me realise how woefully incapable some ‘specialist builders’ are. Is it they are poorly informed or do you think a lot of issues are born from a desire to literally have customers pants down? I think lying about installing uprated components is blatantly being dishonest but the reuse of things that should be renewed every time is surely a mix of being a naughty Berty B.S hitter and a full bore tea leaf. Or am I giving them too much credit? Luckily techs like you exist to put humpty dumpty engines back together again ! Gorging on catching up on the channels vids but really keen to see the RS3 engine doing what it should how it should and from an old farts perspective that noble and it’s discarded Sony ‘flip off’ reminds me of days gone by where I thought my Hyundai S-Coupe mvti was ‘pure rapid’ and that stereo was as cool as me! Treat that noble kindly do the best to it you can. If that means dipping the chassis I’d do it. The old girl deserves it ….and please put the Sony back it’s heartbreaking !
I'm totally surprised as to the low subscriber count. I've learnt more from watching your videos than many other channels I've subscribed to, and not just about VAG motors. Your explanation of the functions etc are spot on.
I’m not an engine builder or involved in the automotive world but I am sat open mouthed watching this. I have worked in mechanical engineering and used to machine and build precision assemblies. I cannot fathom how anyone could build like that and then charge for it. 😮
Really enjoyed this one chaps…👍🏻 a Timelapse engine build would be good but with a voice over explaining things but maybe a better way is to video each section and talk it through as you do it and then cut it all together..👍🏻 Keep up the work info 2023 and looking forward to more great stuff
Can we have a time laps on the build and when the important/interesting parts come up, stop the time laps and explain then back to time laps. Also this is my first comment on UA-cam ever and I think it worthy of yourself. Your vids are really coming along Ricky!! Lovin them massively GP03 SLO.
I know feck all about engine building or even car mechanics for that matter! However, I found this really interesting from a number of perspectives. 1. Pointing out errors as you see them and managing to resist naming the original engine builder. 2. Fault finding and attention to detail. 3. Explaining things to numpties like me in simple terms. Keep up the great work and if you want some tips on how to video then narrate over it give Vehcor channel a quick watch of any one of his videos as he excels at it!
Great video, I love the detail you go into. Have you covered measuring piston to bore clearance in any previous videos? I'm currently rebuilding an engine that had a rebore and new pistons 250 miles ago. It's suffered a bearing failure. Lots of wear on the piston skirt coating already.
Great vid as always, I've stil got the set of std. pistons and rods from the TTRS engine you built for me all those years ago, must be 11 years?? You're welcome to have them back. Just finished watching, JC on a bike?? CC again next year? we're in, please! Thanks for the vids all year, amazing work, mechanic colleges should use this video as a 'how not to' with so many issues. Happy new year mate.
Absolutely loved that vlog whilst I feel awful for the owner that was some great reveal work. Looking forward to the rebuild and on that score, no to time lapse for me, I'd much rather see the whole lot. Have a great 2023 and keep up the brilliant vlogs they are very much appreciated 🤙🏻
Absolutely amazing video! But so sad for that customer being ripped of from another one calling himself ”enginebuilder” I woule very much appreciate a video when u assembly the new block together and maybe why not the head aswell. I love the details u are talking about ! Keep it up ❤ Really looking forward to another episode of this DAZA build
Wonderfull couple of episodes guys. Stay professional and let customer deal with rogue builder himself. These two episodes have been a joy to watch over Christmas and show case your attention to detail making you trustworthy in my eyes . Fantastic video, you came got mentioned by a local car dealer someone was buying a R8 manual from them but wouldn’t buy it until you had done a full inspection and report happy new year
Great video thanks, very interesting, and reminds me why it is worth getting the right people to do the job first time! If ever you think of doing an open day I would be interested as I live locally.
No to the timelapse engine build… we love the detail! While the camera work is great, it’s often hard to see the exact details that grab your eye. Would it be possible to take some snaps on a good camera or phone and overlay them on the video for 10 seconds as you talk us through it?
Ricky sorted my blue R8 in the background. Thanks again fella, absolute superstar. We weren’t sure what the problem was at first but Ricky sensibly worked through possible solutions and got to the bottom of the issue. Super fair with his pricing, can’t rate him highly enough. 🙏
The 2nd upload of the rs3 video was recommended to me by youtube. So glad it was. Top drawer content. Could listen to your knowledge all day. Gained a subscriber 🙌🏼🙌🏼
This is one of the best videos on how not to build an engine I've seen. Your knowledge and attention to detail is on another level. I hope the owner somehow reveals who was responsible for this mess so others can avoid and these cowboys can cover the cost of a rebuild.
When you build it, please show us what you measure/check during assembly. Seems to me that wouldn't have helped the previous build of this motor given the suspicions surrounding the liners but give us an idea to how careful you NEED to be with this stuff, eapecially when you're not just buzzing the oem parts together (Ie: stuff you already know is designed to work together).
No, it’s to remove the chance of the lifter backing off at high rpm by getting the lifter to sit deeper in the stroke. Just not needed and cause the lifter to actually jack up and remove all lash.
Reckon the previous engine builders were sponsored by strap on tools 🤔 Great work, more care by Ricky pulling a “scrap” engine apart than was taken by those who built it!
Hi REP, Thanks a lot for this informative video -- I really liked the closeup shots of the engine parts so I could see the build quality of the gasket. At this point, I am not sure whether it is best to keep my Zhiyun Crane 2 for the next few years or upgrade to the RS3 Pro. I have had the Zhiyun Crane 2 since 2018 and have been using it to make walking videos -- feel free to check them out on my channel. It is calibrated nicely to compensate for sudden turn movements (good amount of deadband). Though the micro jitters and z axis bounce movement can bother me sometimes -- especially on intense hikes. I am wondering in your opinion whether it is worth it to upgrade from the Zhiyun Crane 2 to the DJI RS3 Pro?
I'm really enjoying watching you strip this, I'm a pretty competent car guy, I'm not an engine builder and even i can see how poorly that's been worked on previously. Absolutely shocking
Regarding the aluminium bolts, could it be because of the ally block? Different metals react to moisture/corrosion and sometimes if different materials have been used, the bolts can be impossible to remove.
the owner needs to get his cash back or shame the previous engine builder then sue him what an indepth vid guys keep it all coming cheers from down under
only found your channel this year but i'm hooked! never going to have the cash to be a customer, but i'm blow away not just by your motor building skills and knowledge, but by the insights in to the world of motor sport. So looking forward to 2023. BTW what tools would you recommend, I've heard some good things about snap-on 😉
Hello! Please tell me what kind of thermal gap is allowed when assembling a daza stock block with je pistons. Is it allowed to apply hone on cylinders?
@@REPerformanceUK I mean the thermal gap between the cylinder walls of the engine block and the piston je. I have a cylinder size of 82.54, a je piston size of 82.42. will the engine work normally with such dimensions? Or will only the installation of sleeves save? As far as I know, these cylinders cannot be sharpened to the repair size 83.0
@@Max-lg The cylinder sleeves are plasma arc sprayed and can't be honed or bored no. In the JE manual it says the recommended piston to wall clearance, read it. If you've lost it contact JE.
Great content.Much appreciated.Purchased a new 8Y RS3 and after watching this can really appreciate Audi RS engine design.Look forward to rebuild.Normally I would replace oil and filter every 6000 km’s,Subaru life.Audi recommend every 15,000 km’s with 0w-30 oil. What would you recommend?Car never does short drives and is run up to temperature before intended use.New Zealand climate is far more forgiving then UK climate?Cheer’s.
Thinking outloud.....Often aluminum (or other non-std fastener materials) are used for thermal expansion mismatch purposes. While, as you state, it's possible weight savings is the reason for the Alum fasteners, the coeff of thermal expansion of 8-12ppm/K of steel in this temp range is much lower than 16-24ppm/K for aluminum. As things heat up with steel bolts and aluminum flanges/bodies, the bolt tension would increase significantly (depending on free length) because the bodies are expanding more than the fasteners, potentially yielding the far weaker aluminum. Then when we go cold again, the locally yielded aluminum has very little preload remaining (if any). So they used aluminum fasteners to mitigate the issue altogether?
Fantastic job..... definitely know your engines , unlike the previous guy 😂 What does a rebuild like this cost and is the rs3 pretty reliable? Is the aluminium engine (2018) better than the early 2015 engine?
Lovely video, so interesting! QQ: if the bearings come out scratched, won't the journals be scratched as well? Or is the crankshaft material much harder than the bearings that it may not "imprint"?
New subscriber. Great video, seen your work on Matt Armstrongs car. Customer will be happy that they will get a decent built motor. Hope they get some money back from whoever built that one. Some of the stuff was shocking.
The Integrated Engineering spec Mahle Motosport pistons for the 2.0/2.5 T(F)SI have a VW/Audi stamp on the underside and based on the few closeup shots in the video, they look like the ones you have here.
Hi REPerformance team, happy new year to all, I'm looking in buying a 2015 RSQ3 with 123000km on, what must I look for or listen to before buying, are there any signs. If I plug in the OBDeleven PRO what must I go and look for? Thank you for the awesome content, the tips and tricks are mind-blowing, wish we had a double of your self in South Africa.
Very interesting! The importance of dealing with honest people! What a shocking job, with no recourse to recovering the previous costs even with all the evidence!
Holy Moly..... What a mess. That is shocking to say the least, plus the owner as said in the video, has got a double cost now! I hope the owner agrees to come onto the channel and provide his/her story of the history of the engine. Obviously, whilst this is being documented, things will be kept under wraps, but the first garage should be footing the bill for this, especially if they're advertising themselves as a 'Specialist'. Wow.... Unbelievable engine mess.
And people wonder why garages get such a bad reputation and why we never trust the the work that’s been carried out and the prices we are charged for parts etc , great upload again very interesting 👍
Quality video as always Ricky, any chance of a gen1 v10 plus guide video in the new year? Apologies if this is a duplicate post, was logged in on the wrong account previously 😂
Really enjoy watching your content, talk about buy cheap buy twice, so many chancers masquerading as experts out there in the car and bike world. You've got to get Fagan or Baron down to Combe 😎😂
Feel gutted for the owner ! I've been in the same situation with my Evo it was built by a so called Evo tuning company to have nothing but problems afterwards so had to go to another specialist to find out there work was horrendous like a back street garage and it cost me a fortune to put it right . I would have cut my losses but have owned it for sixteen years so it feels part of the family now .
I agree! But it’s down to the owner and not me! It’s not fair for me to sl&g off the company who built it when I don’t know the full story. Has it been somewhere else and I’ve not been told for example?
Wow, don't think I could have done one so bad.. reminds me of my st strip down and rebuild when I was 11ish..old cortina 2.0 that was dead. Pulled it apart and laid out on the floor. Then put together, nothing new... And cardboard gaskets ect. But it fired up, sounded worse than a diesel lol. But that got me into engines.
Been put together by the same person as mat Armstrong's lambo lol, that was bad. Hope they got money back for R e performance to do it properly, keep up the great content guys 👌. Happy New year.
As an aircraft engineer, I appreciate the attention to detail. We have to because of lives, but this is terrible. It looks likes it's been rebuilt by a Lego mechanic. Great video, happy Christmas to you and yours. Pity the arse that built this can't be named, if only to save others from the same.
Good to watch someone that actually cares about what they do. If you are spending £1000s on a engine you want to know it's being assembled correctly. That cowboy that used the old cover must be a part time plasterer by the way he applied that sealant.
I think the customer needs to be looking for compensation from the previous builder. I’m not one for airing my dirty laundry in public but I’d be tempted to name and shame them somehow because I could’ve done a better job blindfolded with one arm tied behind my back in my shed with just a flat bladed screwdriver, hammer and adjustable spannner from the middle isle of Lidl !!!!!!! Absolutely shocking workmanship 🤦🏻♂️ Top quality as always boys and I look forward to your shenanigans in 2023.

Great watch ,happy new year to you and your team 👍
As always amazing video pal. I’m curious though how much time is spent on good ol elsa 👍.
All the best for the new year.... when is Barum Engines Lambo coming in?
Thank you! When his exhaust arrives!! The service was done by Lambo!
@@REPerformanceUK I know and he wasn't impressed at the people or the price. You're the better man to do it
@@dennisreid4428 thank you!
Does Snap on do Cowboy hats to send to the engine builders who obvs robbed this customer 🤦♂️ loving the channel 👍👍
Very interesting! The importance of dealing with honest people! What a shocking job, with no recourse to recovering the previous costs even with all the evidence!
Thank you!!
as someone whos never built an engine, i still know a sh*t job when i see one. I hope whoever built it is getting taken to court for loss of funds.
class video your knowledge is second to none mate
Unreal! Love this series!
Another great video. Thanks chaps.
Is that staining caused by the coolant or could the engine have been flooded with water?
Happy new year!
Soon as I see coolant .. my first thinking was also machine work with liners. Do a detailed video of it being built back together more educational.
Really enjoy watching your content, talk about buy cheap buy twice, so many chancers masquerading as experts out there in the car and bike world. You've got to get Fagan or Baron down to Combe 😎😂
Very true! Yeah we know Fagani pretty well so will get him on the channel!!
Great vid - seasons greetings from New Zealand !
Thank you! Happy new year mate!!
Get a macro lens so you can get in super close to these issues?
Yeah we need to look at how to get proper close ups in the engine parts!
What camera do you use?
@@jonhoneyball194 not sure! That’s a Davy question! 😂
Thoroughly enjoyed this video thank you
Feel gutted for the owner ! I've been in the same situation with my Evo it was built by a so called Evo tuning company to have nothing but problems afterwards so had to go to another specialist to find out there work was horrendous like a back street garage and it cost me a fortune to put it right . I would have cut my losses but have owned it for sixteen years so it feels part of the family now .
name and shame the last builder so others know not to go there
I agree! But it’s down to the owner and not me! It’s not fair for me to sl&g off the company who built it when I don’t know the full story. Has it been somewhere else and I’ve not been told for example?
@@REPerformanceUK smart thinking . Customers never give u the full story most of the time
Why you wrenching on flat engine parts that take gaskets? Are they getting re faced? I assume not. I was always thought this is ultimate no
I love this...and I am not even a bloody car freak or a mechanic...
@@dgmclar I’m not, there are specific areas to put your lever bar to part the cases that aren’t part of the sealing surface!
Hahahaha don’t worry mate all Cortina engines sound like that! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great content as usual. Really interested also in one of the past videos. What was the final outcome for the R8 with seized bearings .
So was the no4 piston in back to front ?
Been put together by the same person as mat Armstrong's lambo lol, that was bad.
Hope they got money back for R e performance to do it properly, keep up the great content guys 👌.
Happy New year.
Thank you! Happy new year! Yeah not nice for the owner!!
If I win the Lotto, I know who I'm coming to sort out the R8 I'll be buying 😁
Happy New Year to all at REPerformance.
Absolutely shocking workmanship 🤦🏻♂️
Top quality as always boys and I look forward to your shenanigans in 2023.
Can you please do a RS3 v2 buyers guide? Cheers Ricky good job 👏
When you find a good engine builder, you never leave them🤣
Love this content. Thanks guys.
😀 Oh! Ricky silence is golden, and great content as usual.
Thank you! Yeah I think this way works well tbh!!
Brilliant, well done for taking the time to strip it all down and explain what some Muppet has done. Hopefully they learnt something too!
Glad you like it!!
