Mato’s style is iconic and gives Pokémon and their attacks this sort of flair that really matches the old Game Boy era of Pokémon, but Yamamoto was responsible for some of the hardest panels I’ve ever seen in manga and comics as a whole.

From comparing Mato and Yamamoto, Mato's is distinct in her chibi-cuter proportions on the characters, almost like you're seeing their overworld sprites from the game. It best reflects how lighthearted Pokemon Adventures initially was. Yamamoto's art style is distinct for his more well-proportioned characters that are closer to the Pokemon Anime's art style. It is also worth noting that his art style is more detailed on the human characters, which gives them a more mature look, best cases I can highlight are Whitley and Y who are drawn a bit older than their given age suggests. I believe the reason to his gradual detailed shift was to better reflect how Pokemon Adventures started tackling even more mature themes in later arcs and ''growing'' with its readers.

Glad you're talking about Mato's art style. He chibi art style makes the manga so charming. I'm a huge fan Yamamoto's and Mato's works. They did a great job in bringing the manga to life

I feel as if Mato's art was legitimately perfect for this era of the manga. the Retro smaller sprites they were the characters are represented by her cuter style, and then to go from GSC-RSE you can literally SEE the transformation as if it was done seamlessly. One of my favorite Mato panels is when Saur evolved into Venusaur on the side of the silph co building and producing a spider web like vine for Blasty and Charizard to stand on, such a sick perspective to play around with.

But as the story progressed they needed big splash pages Mato probably couldn't deliver

i like that you mentioned the ways the eyes are drawn . red is a easy-going and approachable guy, while green (m) is a more serious but hot headed person . so their eye shapes match their personality .
even after mato's art started to decline , her composition and paneling were still great
also can we talk about how cool pokespe red's design is ? definitely an upgrade from the games

Mato's art transition to Yamamoto's by volume 9 to 10 was definitely a really big change since both artist had different art styles. I love Mato's for the bold shadings and Yamamoto's for a more dynamic art.

I would definitely be interested in you discussing the panelling and other such for battles.
I loved both art styles that came up in Adventures, though I will say the aging was possibly my favourite part - it’s always cool to see he protagonists actually age and have time oass

I could immediately tell when Yamamoto took over. I thought I was reading a Shonen I had to do a double take on the book itself. But Matos was very unique. It really felt like GEN 1 felt In the games.

    Favorite panels
Cyrus getting hit by Draco meteor against Cynthia
    N beating alder

When I first read PokeSpe/Adventures I'll admit, I was really put off by the art style change lol. I've come to appreciate Yamamoto's art a lot more nowadays (especially since he has to illustrate multiple series simultaneously...like wtf) but Mato's art just has this nostalgic childlike charm to it. It makes you feel good by just looking at it lol

I think it's really funny You mention one punch man's art style being really important, when that's actually the redraw lol. The mangeka who writes one punch man and mob psycho 100 actually drew both of them as a webcomic originally. He is not the best artist let's just say that lol, but he drew all of it, and then when one punch man got picked up for syndication it was all redrawn. However mob psycho wasn't. I just think it's really funny that you're talking about the importance of a good and detailed art style, and your specifically talking about one punch man. When the original version of One Punch Man literally doesn't have that but still got popular lol

Honestly, the main reason I prefer Mato's art style is her interpretations of the pokemon themselves. Mato draws every pokemon incredibly stylized, with a very clear interpretation of how she thinks they'd look from sprite to panel. With Satoshi Yamamoto, every pokmeon looks super boring, like it was lifted directly from the official artwork; there is no interpretation or dynamic flair, it just comes off as boring to me.
