Panera isn't a bagel place as Rhett stated. You don't go there thinking oh they have bagels, you go there thinking that you want bread or soup in a bread bowl or a sandwich with a soup in a bread bowl.
right? Like I don't know if I've ever ordered a bagel from there? I know some people do, but I mainly get soup or a sandwich sometimes? Those are the things I order
that makes sense - I guess it all comes from the german verb - schmieren which means to lubricate / grease or smear something. Cause i was confused, but yiddish has a lot of similarities to german
As and employee of Einsteins I'm proud we took this win! As a baker at Einsteins the cheesy hasbrown bagel for the first round was appalling! That store can do better! Plus, the green chile and cheddar jalapeno bagels are the real winners at Einsteins!
Schmear and smear are basically the same word. Smear is the English word, Schmear is the yiddish word that has recently been borrowed into English. Schmear has more to do with food and is more readily used as a noun but I think both can be used as nouns and verbs.
The WHOLE POINT of a muffin top is to get all the crispy, sugary, topping filled goodness. Why Panera decided to just make a bread cookie is so confusing to me 😅
Yup! It’s absolutely amazing. So good that I’m currently making some homemade!😂 Hopefully this recipe, for the actual cinnamon crunch, is good or I’m going to be let down.
As a Panera Bread baker, I'm sad we took this loss! On the last cinnamon sugar bagel, the cinnamon sugar being on the inside is actually a mistake by the baker who made it that day. You're supposed to perfectly pinch the dough and put the cinnamon crunch topping on top, but I'm assuming their dough partially came apart before baking. Unfortunate loss for Panera, but as many others stated, Panera is more of a sandwich and soup bread place than a bagel place. Einsteins does slap though.

Just looked up Einstein Bros and found that theirs two in my city. Crazy, I never heard of them before. One in a college a the other is across the street from another college. Pretty strategic.
All 3 in the state of Alabama where I live are on or very near college campuses. They seem to be targeting the college student market pretty specifically where Panera likes to target a wider market of working professionals and soccer moms.
As a Brit I cannot fathom eating a bagel untoasted. I've never met a British person who doesn't toast the bagel. It's so hard and chewy without toasting
I was an Einstein Bros. store manager for 4 years way back in the early 2010's while I was getting my Masters degree. Link is 100% right about the "schmear marketing". Einstein's cream cheese is a whipped cream cheese so it "schmears". The word comes from the German word "smear" which essentially means to spread butter... a lighter, more spreadable topping than actual cream cheese. It's easier to spread because it's whipped and almost butter-like.
Compared to the classic NY bagel made by small bagel shops, chain restaurants like Panera and Einstein merely produce bread donuts - a proper bagel requires a crisp outer crust thanks to taking a plunge in a lye water bath prior to baking.
The cinnamon crunch bagels from Panera are 1 of my favorite 3 things. I love them and the chocolate chip cookie...then I LOVE the mac-n-cheese and I get a side of the fruit cup with it. Wow...I'm gonna have to hit Panera this week...lol.
