  • Box filters are often overlooked in our fish keeping hobby. I'm not quite sure why, I believe they are the best filter a average hobbiest can have!

I have one I that I got when I bought a tank that I've never used before but you've just convinced to just throw into my 75 gallon because why not? I'm already using a sponge filter so I'll just split the airline and run it to both.

I'm using an air-driven Lee's Quick & Easy corner cartridge filters in my 10 gallon tower aquarium. These blue boxes have been discontinued, and cartridge supplies are running out too. I plan to cut sections off a roll of filter media and use small filter bags if I need to add carbon, zeolite, or other stuff. Basically, a zero effort box filter conversion. I run this thing off the same air pump as my undergravel filter.
      Now I feel old. 😆

I've never tried box filters, but you made a lot of great points on why one should. In particular, I like how they are customizable and would be great as a back-up filter in a power outage, with 'cycled' media. Personally, the idea of placing water polishing pads/media inside is an awesome idea as well. I mostly run hang-on-back (HOB) filters that I've hot-rodded for additional internal surface area; so the concept of adding a box filter seems very appealing and logical. Good video. 📺

I just got one of the corner filters and a cheapy USB aquarium air pump for a 5 gallon shrimp tank I'm setting up. With a USB power bank, it should keep the tank running for 12 hours or so in power outage. Great peace of mind for around $40 total. I also replaced the bio media with some Seachem Matrix that I already had, and I'm planning on adding a layer of Poly Filter pad to it too. It's like having a mini canister filter, I love it. Oh, and it's almost dead silent too.

I agree. I had these many years ago and the sponge filters are good but they do make a mess when taking them out to service them. They are more versatile with media especially when starting a new tank and taking media from your established tank and helping to cycle the new setup. I use them all the time Thanks for the video.

I recently got 2 small hobs to run cycled media in only, but this morning I was actually thinking I may be able to run only cycled media in a box filter. Thanks for the confirmation. I think I bbn know which route to go now. It's for quarantine tanks.

I’m setting up my first QT for few platies i’ve ordered and I have been through the dilemma of how to best cycle the new set up, I dont have a spare sponge filter in my display (I hate how it looks) but I have an extra bag of ceramic media (month old) and can spare a piece of sponge, after visiting 3 LPS I ended up buying a box filter and a air pump so I can add some ceramic media and sponge to hopefully instantly cycle my QT.
This video just gave me the reassurance I needed, as you mentioned, these filtets are rarely mentioned nowadays.

i haven't set up an aquarium in years but back when i had them up i used box filters most of the time because they are very effective, simple, and easy to service. my favorites were made by a company called lustar, they are round, #L-244, about 5" tall and 4-1/2' diameter and are made from thick green plastic that doesn't crack or break as easily as the cheaper filters do. i have one on my desk full of colored gravel as an ornament because it looks cool, somewhere i have a box in my storage with about a dozen of them in it.. lustar also made other shapes and sizes of box filters, i think these were the biggest round ones.

  • @furripupau

Box filters make good supplementary filters, say you have a power filter already - you might run a box filter just for biological filtration, fill it with bio media, if you ever have to do a deep cleaning of the power filter, no worry about the tank crashing because the box filter runs totally independent of it and has its own bacteria colony. Also good for polishing water, toss a few marbles or rocks in the bottom to weigh it down, fill the rest with filter floss, let it run for a few days in the tank and you'll have the clearest water ever.

Box filters are simple, yet effective. What's not to love? I use 'The Bubbler' by Penn-Plax/Veny's. It's got both a green-colored slotted cover, as well as a slotted internal base plate. And when combined with both cut green-colored filter mat & filter wool media? *The entire box filter is almost invisible when hidden amongst aquarium plants!*
Tip: to add ballast & secure the box-filter in place, simply wind a long strip of flexible plant weight around the filter's uplift tubes. These will be hidden by the filter media. Voila!

I use diy box filters, for all my tanks, the first type very similar to manufactured ones on the market, which I found its mechanical filtration not very effective, because due to the small intake holes, the poop won't be sucked in until it break down to smaller particles, so i tried a new type, this one has an intake pipe instead and it works extremely well, the bottom of my tank looks spotless not a single waste

You are completely spot on man
Sponge filter are overrated in my book. Its not enough quality biological filtration.
I truly see them for extra or just as a nice touch when you add an airstone
But an airstone should not be you filtration in the first place
Ofcoure shrimp tanks are a bit different but i still would go for a hob with a prefilter sponge
I dont like to rely on water changes
I can leave my tank easily 6 months without maintenance (of course i dont do that) . Its all about building a great ecosystem.
Good porous Rocks as decoration are heavily underrated also very good filtration
Fast aggressive growing plants when you have low light is also a great filter strategy. Because then you dont have to deal with the fact that you need to trim them evry few days

2 big corner filters on side and one suction filter in the middle.
If it's cycled before putting fish.
    It rivals the Tricle-Filter 1000Lph.
    For 15g to 30g setup.
If higher Gallon. You need supporting filter.
I'm using 2 big corner and one suction filter in middle.
    With 9 Goldfish in tank.
It can handle it. But you need to 50% WC every 3 days
But if you have only 2-3 fish.
It can go for 1week 30%wc

back in the late 90's this is all i used on my goldfish tank (Wool and carbon) god to think that aquarium filters have come so far and now offer so much more variation, and filter medias. yes they are underrated, I use sponge filters instead as I just believe you get more biological over the box ones, however the box ones do come in handy if you want to use chemical filtration along with biological. I mainly use sponge filters as secondary filtration attached to an AC/DC air pump for power outages.

No. The Ziss bubble bio filter. I tried one in my 29 gallon but found it gave me way too much flow - and if I slow it down then there’s not enough power to keep the entire bed moving. I’m a great fan of Aquarium Co-op and buy a bunch of stuff from them but I think I muffed it on this item. Just wanted to know if your experience was similar as I do value your opinion.

I don’t use box filters, but I can’t imagine that messing with floss and ceramic media “a couple times per week” is easier to maintain than squeezing a sponge into a bucket once per quarter... They may very well be “better,” but not “easier.”

Pretty sure he was talking about changing the floss in the Aqua clear 110’s. Box filters can go a while before cleaning and they don’t lose function like the sponge filters. They both work great though, it’s more of a personal preference in my opinion.
