According to the rishis, about 65% of prarabdh karma is preset due to past life karma where as about 35% of our destiny is free will. A bit over 50% of our karma is with our parents, spouse, and children. One of the best mantras to help us with family issues is Shri Guru Dev Datta, as this purifies us of family karma.
Every time the mantra is chanted, it generates a bit of sattvic energy which is passed along to the family member in which you owe a karmic debt to, so the chanting acts as a replayment mechanism for your karma. I hope this helps.
