There are many more skills and responsibilities that a creative director has in managing and running a design department. Want to get promoted? Listen carefully and start to focus on and develop the skills I discuss in this video. You will be on your way to being a creative director in no time!

    I’ve always wanted to be a creative director and writer in the video game industry, so I am working on a degree in computer science. Lately I’ve been discouraged as to my own work ethic because my classes are difficult and the times don’t make things any easier. I came to this video to find out if I was on the right path. And I was genuinely surprised by what you were saying, I was expecting “get a degree, intern, etc” and I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to do that, but the qualities you mentioned that make the best directors, that I can do. You’ve just inspired me. Thank you. Oh and I subscribed 5 minutes ago :)

I didn't really have an idea but I recognize my strengths in the work of an CD. Even though there's a long way ahead, I think this really is the role / job I want to work towards! Philip, love our succinct, ease of speech and knowledgeable tackle of this elusive field. Until I viewed your video I'd thought I was NOT cut out to be a CD but, had always aspired to be. I've been working in Asia--currently Singapore-- (native Californian) for the past 25-years as a choreographer, director and producer. Whenever I heard 'Art Director" I thought one needed to be proficient in graphic design, illustration, web design, etc. Your rundown on managing motivating, thinking out-of-the-box, and client/goal specific is something that has always resonated with me. When folks mentioned CD I thought that was the domain of advertising or industries outside my experience with stage and TV. Now I'm thinking, HEY, maybe that's what I've always been doing. I'm less an artist and more a pragmatist. I love finding the purpose behind direction vs art (choreography, acting protocols, etc.) for art's sake. Am I a candidate? Have I the skills and tools to dabble in this elusive field? Hmm. Thanks for the eye-opener.

    This is such a great video! I want to go into the film industry and be on a creative team in the future, but I am kinda lost when it comes to the process. What are some of the jobs that are on the creative teams for the filming industry? And what do these teams work on, is it advertising, the actual movie making/ script making, or is it more of the business side of things? I hope that question made sense and thanks again for making the video!

    Hi philip! I am so happy i stumbled upon your channel, it's amazing! If you have any time to spare please help me out because I am quite stressed! I am currently a sophomore in high school. My only hobby is art and i have such a strong passion for it. I love to paint and digitally draw like semi-realistic people and cartoons! I am also working on my technical skills and branching out to new techniques. Art is one of the only things that I can say I'm "good" at or dedicated to. But the thing is... my parents do not think this is realistic and so do many others. I live in a strict household and everyone in my family is in business ! I've mentioned a few times about going to art school with my parents, and my mom is iffy saying that how are you going to buy ___ if you do art. And this doesn't bother me that much because I rather be happy doing what I love then hating life, but I am still scared. And my dad strongly disapproves so even if i apply for an art college I don't know if they'll let me .. and they know my love for art. The only thing I think they would approve of is something that's part business or well payed. Also- I don't get very outstanding grades so is that going to affect anything? Do you have any advice for what I should do with my parents? What caterer do you think is best for me? I am sorry for asking so many questions but I am scared to become an adult and I want to plan my future ahead because I'm so clueless of the real world. Thank you so much for reading if you are!!!

      Angel, Being a fine artist is rough. I was trained as a painter and have an MFA, so I know. Most fine artists either support their work through another profession or they find a more "commercial" route eventually. Now, if you were to become a graphic designer then the thing to do to calm your parents and maybe even get them to support you going to school for it it to show them what graphics designers make for a salary. In the USA a designer can start at $45,000/yr and work their way up. I personally had Sr. GDs working for me who made $130,000+/yr. As a VP of Design I made over double that. Get the AIGA graphic artists salary guide study it and get some ammunition for your next convo with your parents.

    What a great video. I've been a Creative Director for the past 4 years, and although I am doing many of the things you mention in your video, It is so refreshing to hear anew.
    I particularly struggle with 2 things: first the little time I have to design; which it seems should not be part of my job, and second the management of projects.
    Any tips and advise on how to make the management better?. I've tried all kind of tools, spread sheets, white boards, Management systems, but still having a hard time.
    I'm not sure I am enough of an organized person to do a good job there, and sometimes I wonder if been promoted to CD was the best option.
    Thanks for the great advice on all your videos. I will pass your channel to all my designers.

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  6 років тому +2

      GD for the RW, You're right, in a perfect world you would be directing and not designing - but some companies need all hands on deck and you have to pitch in with the design work. All companies are different that way.
      As far a management of projects go: that is, keeping all the phases, presentations, reviews and revisions rolling on time and in order - yes it is complex and it can be very overwhelming. I've been at it for 30+ years and I'm still refining how I do things. I wish I could say "use this app - use this method" and it would all fall into place, but it's not that simple, and all projects are different, so it's never that easy.
      Personally I use a combination of a Gantt chart for timeline and calendaring (and visually seeing overlapping projects), a spreadsheet to track phases, deliverables, teams and assignments, and a plain old To Do List (also a spreadsheet list) that I update every day with the newest priorities- marking off the "done items" and elevating the "hot items". And it's always 50 items long - that never changes!
      Finally, the fact that you are now a CD is great. Many never get that far. Don't go back. There are too many limits on compensation and growth (business and strategic knowledge) to remain a designer. Don't get me wrong, I love design, and designers, - but everyone has to grow and continue to challenge themselves.

      Phillip, thanks sooo much for the fast response. You are absolutely right, and I consider myself pretty lucky on the sense that I still have time to design. I've been on this beautiful profession all my life (almost 20 years), and overcome many challenges, so hopefully the new "managerial" part of CD will become second nature as well. As a self-taught person, I've never had the opportunity to learn directly from anybody that could show me the ropes, and I feel now that at 50, I may be missing many things and sometimes feel a bit of a "Imposter" :) (yes I watched that video too)
      We use Basecamp as out project management tool, but there are some things I feel is lacking. As a very visual person, I would love to see how the different projects overlap, and I tried to translate what Basecamp offers into some type of big spread that I can print and have on my office; at the moment a white board is my best friend.
      But my biggest problem is the "hate" I have for Excell, or any other report with that look and feel.
      Watching your video has been a wake up call. It was nice to see I'm practicing many of the things you mentioned, but it was better sseeing the things I have to work on.
      Once again thanks for the great videos and the sharing of your experience, your work is awesome, and I will definitely keep coming every week and check out all new posts

      Hey guys, really enjoyed reading your comments. I am currently working in the VFX industry as an artist/ technical artist and have come to the realization that I want to become a CD, more so because I enjoy keeping up with the technical and aesthetic aspects of this industry as well the people, project and financial management aspects. I don't have (in my opinion) any relevant financial management under my belt and worry that that may be my undoing. I've been on the designer end for almost 13 years but I've always enjoyed projects where I was able to assist artist and trouble shoot solutions that came up, it just felt more fulfilling.
      I am self taught and very much feel an impostor which also scares me a little that I'm foolish for wanting to become a CD.
      That being said, how would you suggest I go about seeking mentor-ship within the studio? I fear (despite how nice a person he is) I may give my leads or the studio CD the impression I want their job, when in reality I plan to move on in a couple of years but would really like the experience to help me get started in that direction (without feeling like a complete impostor).
      Love the video.

I am currently in the Air Force and I have been going to school for marketing and I have done a ton of research and internships seem to be a MAJOR aspect in becoming a creative director. I do not have ANY experience in internships seeing that I am active duty. I am 25 years old and I want to know is it too late to start? How do I start to gain experience while being in the military? I have been in for 5 years as MP (military police) and I want to finally start pursuing what I really want to do...I would love any advice you have to offer. Thank you very much for your time sir.

      Milla, I think getting design training experience while in the service will be difficult. But at 25 you are NOT too old to start. I didn't start design until I was 32! Do whatever self-training on design that you can do on the internet with free resources like UA-cam and others. Then as soon as you get out take some design courses. Until you learn the craft of design there is no point in getting an internship - thats where you have to start working as a designer. They don't teach you there...they will want you to perform!

      Hi Philip, in India, a senior copywriter has a scope to become creative director. According to my knowledge, there are copywriters who are promoted as CDs.

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  6 років тому

      Yes there are copywriters who are promoted to CD's, but generally CD's in copywriting or strategy and not CD's in design. At least not here in the US. Having training and experience in design, aesthetics, color and semiotics is critical to determining the best work - which is the primary reason a CD exists, managing the design team and getting the best work out of them.

    Great video sir! I have two questions I would love for you to answer.
    1. Is graphic design the only major to allow someone to get on this career path, or could a major in marketing work?
    2. How long on average does it take for one to become a creative director?

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  6 років тому

      Great questions Ash,
      1) Marketing doesn't really have creative directors, unless you are talking about advertising agency work, where at senior levels they can overlap a little. But Marketing is a great field of study and I wish I had studied it more formally in school. It is also applicable to almost any business you find yourself in so that is a huge bonus. But it's not designing - so you have to weight how much you love actually creating designs.
      2) It depends on the size of the company - in a tiny co. or agency you could become a CD in 4-5 years. In a larger company or agency it could take 10 or more.

    I know this was 4 years ago but I hope he responds (or anyone else). I’m 15 and wondering what I should do with my life. I’ve read multiple books in how to be rich or financially literate. So what I’ve summed up is your salary does not make you rich (it just helps). Knowing that, I realised I don’t want to become trapped in the wheel of working for money. I write poems, draw frequently (mainly shoes or design) and create music. I’d like to work with my mind and not work with my hands which all the other boys are doing (becoming builders etc,). I was thinking of becoming a creative director or have a career in creating. ***QUESTION*** if I’d like to pursue a career in design or creation, what do you think I should do to set me up for success? (Books? Good Habits?,etc). I feel like we were born with a brain to create and think differently. I’ve always been different from other people in my school and want to use that as an advantage. I love this channel and great video thanks. :)

      First, you need a more optimistic avatar name...LOL. If you want to pursue a career in design or any thing creative - start doing that creative thing: designing, music, photography, writing. Become exceptional at your craft. That is job #1. No one becomes a Creative Director unless them rise through the ranks of design as a worker and is excellent as a creative. Being a CD is about managing people, project, clients, finances and finally about giving people creative guidance. By the time you are a CD, you basically don't design anymore - you are a creative executive, a manager of people. Learn good work habits, focus, discipline - but you do that by learning to be the best creative you can....hope that helps.

      alanthe, Start by taking drawing classes. Just basic drawing. Sketching is a very important skill in almost any creative profession and one that surprisingly few designers still have. Take a good graphic design foundation course. You'll dabble in illustration, photo-retouching, typography, layout, web, animation - from there you'll find out what you like and build from there. You don't have to know the final answer going in - you'll discover as you do it. Just start.

      Cup Cake, You're right. Creative Direction is the same in any industry - you just have to be at a high level in understanding the technical and aesthetic aspects of that industry. Most CD's come up through the design ranks - and then learning people management (soft skills), project management and financial management. Those last 3 are the skills many aspiring CD's never think about - but are a very big part of being successful as a CD. Good luck!

    This sounds cool. I am an artist doing my masters and really reconsidering everything - my skills, financial viability etc. I finally decided to look up creative director and it seems like almost like an extension of a critical artistic practice except there's collaboration, management and specific business goals. I personally love talking to others artists and designers about their ideas and the process cos it triggers my own imagination... so much so that sometimes I think I'm better at talking through ideas with others than actually making art. But it seems a creative director should be someone who actively hires and nurtures ppl who are more skilled than them anyway? Correct me if i'm wrong.
    The only problem I have right now is where do I even start! In a way, I already know I should probably start out as a graphic designer. Are there other ways in my context? Also, among graphic designers, how is a creative director determined? My guess (and hope!) is that it isn't always necessarily the best technical designer that is most qualified to be a creative director. Ahh anyways, great clear video. potbotra! Great comments and questions. Yes, I would say that the best way to start is as a graphic designer and work your way up. Pay close attention to the strategy of design, the business of design and working on your people skills - communication, listening, writing - these are what managers look for in people to promote. Yes, you are correct in assuming that people who make great CD's aren't necessarily the top designers, but the ones with the broader skills I describe in this video. I'm certainly not the greatest designer on the planet - and actually stopped designing for the most part pretty early in my commercial art career when I began managing designers. That IS the one thing many don't realize is that you design much less when you are a CD. So many of the best designers don't become CD's for that reason. Any many who do, regret it when they find out so much of the role is about management, finances, performance reviews, HR problems, client communication, etc etc. Good luck in your career and keep tuning in.

      Do I know anything about design? Take a look at my portfolio on my website. Look at the work I have done, and the clients I have worked for. P&G, Levi's, Pepsico, Gap, Inc., Chevron, Petsmart, Safeway, just to name a few. Ask my clients if I know anything about design. Ask any of the hundreds of designers I have mentored and managed. I think that will answer your question.

      I just realized I got defensive and maybe you weren't actually talking to me, but to potbotra...even so...look at some of the greats: Steve Jobs, Elan Musk - not designers - but incredible CD's in reality and design visionaries - you have to admit.

    This job sounds like a lot of what I currently do as a technology consultant, but I want to get into the design aspect. Right now I work with clients at fortune 500 companies and write up design documents for reports and interfaces, then I work with developers to have those objects developed. But I am longing to get into a more creative field. Right now I have an undergrad degree in Information Systems, do you know what Master's degree would be best for getting into a creative director position? Thanks for the video, too

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  6 років тому +1

      Rachel, a masters in Graphic Design IMHO. BFA, then an MFA. But an MFA is only really necessary if you want to teach or you just like school. Practical work experience trumps it all. If I had to do it all over again, I would have gotten and masters in marketing. There is a school in San Francisco that offers a "Design MBA" that sounds really cool.

    I'm currently in college and I'm not exactly sure what career/s will suit me since I want to create fictional stories through games, animation, and maybe comics/manga. It doesn't help that while I've dabbled in 3d modeling, filmmaking, and drawing, I don't think I got the skills to achieve my dream.

    hello philip, i'm a senior in high school and am highly interested in the role of creative directors. I have a pretty solid design background (been in art classes throughout high school) as well as being interested in the business side of your work. I'm just not sure what major to go into that would allow me to pursue both of these interests. Please let me know what you think, and thank you!

      Pat, Good questions. I would major in graphic design and then take as many marketing courses as you can as electives. Or major in what's now called "Communications Design" which is a catch-all title for digital, web, traditional graphics design, motion, etc etc. The only missing thing is the marketing/finance/business stuff which you will have to actively seek out and build into your course program. They are also now beginning to offer Design MBA's which if you eventually do post-graduate work (after you get a BFA, or BA) would be the BEST way to mix the two for a career as a design executive.

      Philip , thank you so much for your input! I think trying to work in marketing classes is key for sure along with a graphic design degree. I've applied to a few schools in the state that have art programs (PA) but if any specific come to mind, I would be more than happy to take suggestions. Lastly thank you for reaching out it really means a ton!

      liien,
      I am going to assume that your company has a few graphic designers, but no creative director or manager of those designers. Is that what the current situation is? You want to know how to get them to realize the need one?

    • @liien87
      @liien87 7 років тому

      Philip VanDusen we are actually not a graphic design office, that's the problem. it was a start up that was bought a couple years back and does interior design, trends research and events. since it was bought, the management and operations sit somewhere else and the designers live in a very forced flat hierarchy that is only comprised of junior designer, designer and senior designer... I started a few months ago and do a lot of graphics even if I'm an interior architect. that's what led me to your great channel. we are total almost 30 people and I think we would benefit from having a creative director.

      @liien87,
      I'm just about to record a video on how to get promoted to creative director (it should post in about 2-3 weeks) where I actually will cover a bunch of the ideas I would give you here. It's a long list, so watch for that video to post!
      I'd start by making a list of what you think the advantages to having SOME hierarchy in the studio and then discuss it with your manager - or the remote manager who could make the org change happen. Focus on financial advantages, productivity advantages, speed advantages, quality of work or quantity of work advantages. That is what the executive branch cares about. They won't care that you just want to be a CD.
      Then just start doing the CD job - act and communicate and behave like you are already. No one gets promoted unless #1 they ask for it and #2 they show they can/will do the job BEFORE they get the title or the pay.
      Good luck!

    I'm now in college studying marketing. There's no doubt that I love creating and want to be a creative director one day. Think I should start taking a Graphic Design course and work on it so hard. Do u think that's enough for now? Do u think it's a bit contrast with those who major in design/art right when they're in college and have some focus on marketing thing? Thank you.

    Hey Phillip, I’m thinking of pursuing the CD path by starting out as a content writer/copywriter. How different is the path to CD compared to starting as a designer?

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  2 роки тому +1

      Joel, if you want to be a CD in design - you need to start as a designer (jr. designer). If you want to become a CD for copywriting (and editor) then start as a copywriter.

      Makenna, It depends what you want to be a CD in. film? Design? animation? you see there are CD's in many creative fields. Generally you get a degree in that field you want to go into and start at the bottom and work your way up through the ranks.
