I have heard many versions of Elgar’s Nimrod played by magnificent orchestras and have been brought to tears but when played by the Guard’s Band at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday it can never be bettered and I’m speechless and overwhelmed.
One of the most moving pieces ever written. This stirs something deep inside of me every time I hear it. Hearing it yesterday during Prince Philip's funeral was especially emotional. Sublimely beautiful.
I never used to be a royal fan but i watched the HRH Philip's funeral and when this was played I just realised they are humans at the end of the day and although they are more poerful than us and live different lives they work for our country and make it what it is!
All the music chosen by Prince Philip, to be played outside just before the service, was wonderful and I found it incredibly moving. It also told us so much about Philip as a man.
Unfortunately , the libtards want to destroy everything that gives us our identity. Shame. That’s hallowed turf was laid by kings of men. It lays to die under the watch of pretenders.

It's played at the poppy wreath laying in our country every year during remembrance also, the crowd becomes completely silent as the band plays, it's quite a haunting piece of music.
Fully agree. My Dad always said Her Majesty’s Royal Marines band was the best & he was absolutely right. This was his favourite classical piece. He passed on armistice day 2013- & as a proud ex serviceman we had it played in all its glory at his funeral. I’m sure he would have approved!
Just tears, streaming down my cheeks, we will never know truly the sacrifice they laid down for us to defend our country (continent), truly humbled, and this beautiful song says it all and makes me feel it with true feeling.
I am truly proud and grateful for all our brothers and sisters who gave there all for our freedom , I also think we should remember all that suffered on all sides . Lest we forget
I share and fully endorse your gratitude for the sacrifices of all who fought for freedom. We cannot ever repay what they gave us. Let’s not get carried away with the suffering on all sides; let’s remember our people died because a dastardly regime sought to enslave Europe and behaved with unspeakable cruelty so I shed no tears for them
The great men and women of Great Britain's services . A time to remember... to thank . To remember a once great nation.. lets not lose it please.. ❤🏴🇬🇧
This music is sublime, but it makes me sad. Why? Because today people are so shallow and selfish, and do not appreciate what they have. Old fashioned values are old because they are good ... that is why they are old. Now, people want instant gratification, they take all they have for granted and do not value the qualities of decency, honesty, manners, humility etc.
It makes me sad for different reasons. For the sadness that ordinary people had to go through all that...that those in power can't make countries work together without war...that humans for all our intelligence can't look after our planet.... And that we can't even get along with each other....even on a one to one basis often.
This piece of music moved my very soul and makes me so proud to be British. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. A truly awe inspiring piece of music. Elgars Nimrod.
All said and done...Britain is such a good example of the Modern State, preserving the good from the past and evolving with the times and the future before them...they reflect on their past and so they have their future...
My birthday is 11th November and Remembrance Sunday has always been an instrinsic part of my life. A few years ago my husband treat me to birthday break in London. We were able to attend the Cenetaph ceremony on a night but cold day. As we stood listening to Nimrod a lone golden leaf fluttered past my face to the ground symbolic of a fallen much loved serviceman. That leaf and the beautiful haunting music brought tears to my eyes.
I'm a high school student, and I "save" a girl in this piece. Every morning I play this, as I get ready to meet her at school. I hope we achieve something good.
What a beautiful piece of music. All Brits of any ethnicity, sexuality, political leaning or class join together and admire what men did to give us what we have.
Its a powerful and profound work to play on the organ..... played it so often over the years - and the sudden reduction of ff>pianissimo is hard on the organ..
Played for Captain Johnny Walker of his Majesty's Navy July 11th 1944 - He gave his all for Ole Blighty "In the day when the waters had well-nigh overwhelmed us, our brother here departed, apprehending the creative power in man, set himself to the task to conquer the malice of the enemy. In our hour of need he was the doughty protector of them that sailed the seas on our behalf. His heart and his mind extended and expanded to the utmost tiring of the body even unto death; that he might discover and operate means of saving ships from the treacherous foes. Truly many, very many, were saved because he was not disobedient to his vision. Victory has been won and should be won by such as he. May there never be wanting in this realm a succession of men of like spirit in discipline, imagination and valour, humble and unafraid. Not dust, nor the light weight of a stone, but all the sea of the Western Approaches shall be his tomb." -Admiral Max Horton at the funeral service of Captain Walker

Yes, this piece as well as Adagio for strings by Barber.
was it customary that it be played, or did Philip choose it particularly?
Ikr. Me too. Beautiful
All the music chosen by Prince Philip, to be played outside just before the service, was wonderful and I found it incredibly moving. It also told us so much about Philip as a man.
When the band reaches a crescendo and the camera cuts to the Cenotaph and the inscription “The Glorious Dead”. Always gets me.
It’s the diminuendo that gets me and then panning the camera to the cenotaph
❤damn right; "They shall not grow old"
