If Kareem, Magic, Bird, Mike, Kobe, etc played in a culture that rewarded stat chasing and accepted “well, he won rings by teaming up with every new shiny All-NBA player”, then they’d have numbers too.

One went to a team with no champion or playoff expectations and the 1 yr heat was valuable due to their bench depth and lackof team chemistry compared the other who went to a team with expectations and championship expectations and experience
1 problem that’s happening with the goat debate is people will say stats matter then the other will say rings matter, when in reality it ALL matters. We are just talking about the greatest champion of all time, we are talking the greatest NBA PLAYER of all time.
To fix this, there should be a list of accolades like what Gil did and then each category of allocated should have a rank on it from 1 - 10 (or something). With 10 being what NBA players value the most.
Example.. if PPG is highly regarded in the goat debate it would rank as 10. Which ever goat player has the highest PPG they will get a 10 in that category.
Other categories can be regular season win %, playoff win %, championship wins, total playoff games, total all star games, etc.
The largest debate is what value you would put on each category, but once that’s squared away this conversation will be over.
This is needed because if we ask, who is the greatest All-Around basketball player ever?

All I'm suggesting is use that same metric and give each one a paper on it. Let them circle the one player who they think is the GOAT. I think the best way to have the goat debate is to craft a narrative. Any player can be the “goat” if you can craft a narrative that enough people believe and buy into. People can use stats, rings, on-court, off-court, team help, eye test, etc. to craft the narrative. Like they say in the podcast, if you just list out criteria for greatness, you will always end up contradicting yourself. So rather than just listing out set standards for rings, ppg, etc, you have to build a narrative around it. Like for Kobe you could argue he’s the most skilled player ever, dominated with and without Shaq, and went to three straight finals against historic competition with historically little help.
