I love the finish quality of a hand forged object. Unlike a piece of perfection popped from a mould, it speaks to the person who made it, the material and the process. It captures time ingenuity and effort.
I find it fascinating how the sound of the metal being hammered changes with the temperature of the material. It seems like the cooler a piece is, the more of a high pitched ring it has when struck. But the hotter it is, it seems like the sound of the strike is a more deadened thud. Especially when you have a fresh heat hammering on the horn of the anvil. Those hotter, deadened thud noises I find so soothing and relaxing. If I was a little kid at a forge, I'd be able to curl up next to something warm and fall asleep to those sounds so easily. This stuff is super cool to watch man thanks for sharing this
James, how you achieve to work and forge weld on such a small scale is beyond me. This Triskelion pendant is definitely a perfect piece of blacksmithing art at its best! Greetings from South Africa 🔥⚒️🇿🇦
I worked for a jeweler in a small tourist town in Ohio in my 20’s. I learned so much and had the opportunity to design and fabricate pieces. To this day it is the only task I have ever done where I could look at the clock while working and realize 3 or 4 hours had disappeared with out my knowledge ❤
Thanks for making this post. What a pleasure it is to watch you at work: not a hammer blow wasted and--best of all--no dialogue to irritate the viewer. Cheers from Australia.
Like I knew what to expect thanks to the vid thumbnail, but to see it all come together? How you deliberately shape and twist the metal into such a delicate shape with each forceful hit - it’s astounding 🤩 So cool! ♥️
Thank you for your video. I love all the old crafts , I served my apprenticeship as a seamstress and making bobbin lace. Sadly there is no employment requirement for it and that craft is now dying out. My school metal work teacher, back in the day, said I would never be a good black smith because I couldn’t hit gently 😅. I’m a red head so hitting and gentle don’t naturally go hand and hand for me. 😂
Thank you so much for the support! The main reason I'm doing a UA-cam Channel is to help inspire others and also to educate people on what's possible in the forge! I'm only getting started really, and your support means alot to me! If you're ever looking for a day course, I'd be happy to help you, I bet you can do it! Never listen to anyone who says you can't 😁
@@oconnorblacksmith thank you 🙏 I currently I am in New Zealand 🇳🇿 so I think it would be a little bit far to travel at the moment. I will keep that in mind for when I return to live in Glasgow Scotland 🏴 in 2026. I have duel citizenship.
To watch craftsmen of many varied disciplines over the internet. Watching over the shoulder of a skilled or master of their trade. If only my grandpa had lived maybe 10 years more. He would have lost his mind seeing the vast and deep volumes of content to gleen insight from, to learn new skills, to perfect a skill one might already be fostering. If only the world could uncork it's butthole a bit, we'd see the beauty in it But those profit margins, I guess, gotta keep being increased, so it seems.
Such a nice video! very cool to see how you work! I would personally also be interested in how the forge works (I mean, I guess using coal and heat and air, but hów do you use it, how do you set it up etc)
Perfect timing on this post! I'm going to a Celtic Festival next weekend, and was thinking about making some triskelion pendants for it. I was wondering; are your tongs wide enough to fit both pieces for the forge weld, or do you have grooves forged into them to keep the rods from slipping?
Why I’m I up at 4:48am watching somebody make a pendant what a wonderful life I have
You could be doing worse 🙃
It’s currently 4:22am where I am. Haven’t been to bed yet… had to see what Mr. O’Connor was up to. 😊
@@oconnorblacksmith I enjoy you black smith man

Beautiful! You’re right, your hammer is your paintbrush. 😊
Thank you for sharing your craft with us. So glad your channel was recommended by Eoin.
Awh thank you, I'm happy to hear that, glad you're enjoying it 😊
Absolutely gorgeous. You inspired me to go out and make one myself today. Thanks James.
Brilliant, I'm delighted to hear that 😀
that is gorgeous mate, top notch stuff😄
Thank you!

As a blacksmith like James it’s easy for the hours to pass us by. Working the steel takes us to different places
Eoin sent me!
Stoked you got your own channel up, man!
Very nice work.
Thank you for sharing.
That is stunning! I loved watching you make this, very peaceful. ❤

Hey there James any tips for a 15 year old to learn some beginners tricks on blacksmithing from a master?
Always nice to see forge welding out of a coal forge, and always nice to see such a nice result.
I'm impressed.

Jamey boy I love your content sir. If I come to Ireland will you teach me to smith
Absolutely, I do day courses in my little forge 😄
james change the battery in your fire alarm lmao
well done
😂😂😂 done!
Congrats on 100k james :)
thats awesome!! gotta say tho, that looked like a mighty fine throwing star before you scrolled it lol.
Soo satisfying, I am on my way to a knife forging course to get myself started
I am struggling with forge welds this month. Your skill is an inspiration, and also quite annoying ;-)
I need this to match my tattoo! Love this and want this!
I have watched a few of your videos now. That beat up old ball peen is obviously your favourite hammer!
Nice job keeping those even.

Haha your smoke detector went off right when you put the pendant on the counter at the last second!😂
This looks like so much fun. How do you get started with an art like this?
Love it. Can you make a uroboros?
Would you ever consider making a mini anvil using the build up method, similar to Joey van der steeg?
I haven't tried anything this small yet. So my question is would a small set of scroll tongs help or hinder this process?

At the very beginning I know I would have smashed my fingers. Just how long did it take to make this
Do you ever make anything musical? Like a triangle?
How can I order one?! 😍
Do you have a website James? Can I order a pendant like you made here?
Gooday george. Im gonna try to make one. Whats your start materiL lengths? 10 mm x 100 mm?
6mm round x 35mm
I need a black screen 8hr version please and thank you 🙏
for sale?
can you make a vid on your power hammer?
I don't think his power hammer is that high-tech. I'd say he uses a camera or his phone.
Change the battery in your smoke alarm, mate!
How much
Curious, do you have a website where fans can purchase some of your artwork?
Hey Megan. My website will be launching at the end of this year! I have FB & Instagram. PM me there and we can arrange it 😊
@@oconnorblacksmith thank you for responding!
I don’t have Facebook or instagram so will have to wait for the website. Thanks though :)

Is it too cheeky to ask what length and diameter stock are you using
45mm of 6mm round 😊
@@oconnorblacksmith Cheers!!
Sometimes you just gotta have hot tongs
You should make a tomahawk
Nice video James, shame about the hole you drilled.
Do a knife!!!
