One tip if you’re struggling to blend your dates is to soak them in warm water beforehand. This makes them a lot softer and easier for the blender to grind up.

Spookily this was released just after I had made another batch of flapjack from the Plant Based Cyclist Book (even though I am not a plant based cyclist, the book has great recipient and has loads of useful information on nutrition). Unfortunately, I realised after I started that I had used the last of my bananas in my pre-ride baked oats so I had to adapt and replaced the banana with marmalade. I’m pleased to say it worked!

No need for blender to purée dates! You can mash them with a fork if you soak them for 10mins in boiling water. Roughly chop dates, put in bowl and pour on boiling water to cover and leave to soak while you have a cuppa or something, then drain excess water (makes a sweet drink) and the dates will mash to the consistency of jam. Whitworth’s website also has a great oaty date slice recipe using this method.

Mashing bananas with a fork takes way too long.. a much quicker way to mash a banana is to put it in the back pocket of your cycling jersey and then fall off your bike at the first junction of your ride when you can't unclip from your pedals.. voila mashed banana in under a second.. (don't ask me how I know this.😉😉).

Cut them in half, add some PB and J, and I'm golden! For energy "gels", I use caffeine-infused maple syrup. PBJ's and maple syrup gels work for me.

At 66 years of age, I find that comfort food doesn't work, but the food Manon eats is a bit beyond my budget. I buy grains. If Lance Armstrong new about eating raw sprouting grains, cheating wouldn't be part of his legacy, I think! Sprouting grains, nuts, seeds, coconut oil and raw honey cost me about $1000 a year if I buy in bulk. That's three 40lb pails of raw honey and one 40lb pail of coconut oil, and 50 lbs bags of assorted grains and seeds. Buckwheat is a very powerful seed. I've cycled 96 miles, spent 5 hours in the city, and returned before sunrise eating only sprouting buckwheat. After sprouting, crush ( I use a hand crank wheat grass juicer) mix with the oil. Pack it into a tin. Go. The coconut oil is a lard until it's warmed up, so I just keep the snack in a tin and use a spoon.

Would people recommend eating a bit less while out on a long ride to encourage fat burning as part of an overall training and weight loss programme? One trainer I spoke to said you can often get a bigger performance improvement from dropping KGs than just more training, obviously depending on how fat and fit you are already!

I've made the flapjacks twice now, they are one of my new ride foods! They are a bit crumbly, is there something I can add to make it more solid? Maybe melted marshmallows?

Manon's emergency fuel reminds me of the (germany) all famous granola bar (Müsliriegel) which I like more than the various sports bars, which either get sticky-slimy in my jersey pockets and/or are sooo chewy that breathing while eating them is almost impossible for me. I prefer the "Müsliriegel" and Fruit-bars best without chocolate in summer.

dates, more dates and even more dates - but remove the kernels beforehand, because riding and chocking on a date kernel is not good. For a fast emergency energy boost: marzipan bar, keeps forever in a saddle bag or any other bag on the bike

On 100 mile and 12 hour TTs, I used to take cheese and tomato sandwiches, a banana, and glucose tablets. What I ate had to be easy to swallow after a lot of mouth breathing.

Any replacement for dates? Because almost all the DIY snacks have those in them.

Very interesting, but if I ate such treats I would be very well fueled, maybe, but with a terrible teeth ache😬. I prefer softer things like small muffins, plum cakes, or chocolate milk dessert in squeezable packaging. And well sugared lemon tea in the bottle.

It is pretty upsetting to see more professional recipe presentation (by weight, in grams) by gcn than basically all but the most elite of cooking channels on youtube.
