@@NunoSobrinho-jw8ek The barb came from a fish, so it happened naturally. By helping the seal, we're derailing evolution. The seals who were able to avoid the barbs should survive and procreate. I know this seems harsh but this is what's best.
Also, if you really think about it, by helping the seal, they are actually hurting the many fish that the seal will eat. This is why I find it bizarre when I see humans think they're being compassionate by feeding wild animals with other animals.

I don't think that's accurate. I think animals know that humans really are supposed to help them but they know that humans have betrayed them and thus they are surprised to find humans doing what they should be doing. That's why animals who have never encountered humans come to them willingly and without fear because we are distinctly different from them and meant to be care takers of this world.

A perfect example is in this video with the fishing line. That seal wouldn't have been in danger in the first place if it didn't get that fishing line wrapped around it. Most fishermen try to recover their tackle and only cut / break the line as a last resort. We pay good money for weights, swivels, hooks, and other tackle and don’t like losing it. Sometimes you can catch a fish and it will tangle you up in something on the bottom. You can’t get it free and end up breaking the line. If the fish is still on the other end this is sometimes how the seal ends up getting tangled. It goes after the fish. Not only did we lose money in our gear, but we lost our dinner too. Every time someone sees an animal in distress like this they automatically think and blame the fishermen. It’s rarely the fishermen’s fault. I’m not saying that there aren’t cases where some idiot tosses line in the water. But most of the time it can’t be helped.

The first one probably didn't see humans as as big of a threat, and when they made the pain stop, that totally fucked its perception of reality. I can't even imagine what was going through its brain after that, but going off its body language, it didn't seem scared.

We have been advised by leading pinniped specialists that, unless we are able to keep the animal in a sanctuary for rehabilitation, we should avoid applying medicines on their wounds. The Cape fur seal goes straight to the water as soon as we release them, washing off any topical cream. Water resistant sprays may lock in bacteria and aggravate their injuries.
We do not want to introduce drugs in a population of wild animals. We see healthy recaptures every single day, proof that sea water acts as a very efficient wound cleaner and healer, and that Cape fur seals are extremely resilient animals.

As a beginner at completing my practicum as a vet tech, I found this fascinating about the care people take for wild animals while monitoring a herd ( forgive the terminology). I admire the compassion taking on them to restrain the animal and control them in the most humane way, to assess and assist, if possible. I have dealt with dogs that were wicked and could take up to 3 people to restrain it, always with care, but they were dogs; meaning limited muscular response... predictable, and able to manage the most difficult animal. This is because we understand them and they have become completely domesticated. These seals are huge animals, with notable power, to move their weigh on land, and in sea. I am just saying, that what I viewed just now, was as completely contained and restrained capture for treatment. This did this in such a way to minimize stress to the patient.

Stuff like this really makes one question the sociological aspects of humanity, I see stuff like this quite often and it's amazing how humans can communicate and emotionally connect with animals while simultaneously being unable to achieve the same thing with other humans, just running along the beach and grabbing random seals to pull barbs out of them and not a single misunderstanding when you let them go, they all just waddle off okay with the whole encounter.
I think ultimately it comes from the human tendency not to view other humans as animals and it overcomplicates interactions.

These men are doing great work. Truly heartwarming.

That first one that was growling when you got to it. Then, after you removed the barb and it realised you were there to help it, it stopped growling and just watched you, was really cool to see. While naturally still cautious it was clearly grateful for your help. 😊👍
