This is really cool, tbh I wasn't even going to try and bother with this Commando because its lack of availability combined with how plain the figure looks, but i might actually try doing this to make it look better.

😮 I got a battery powered HUD helmet my commandos from Etsy and let me say with the black wash and light up visor it really comes to life plus I got 3D custom parts to make it like the 2005 game

I totally agree with you, not adding a bit of blackwash to see the details is upfront lazyness, and hasbro when they want, they can do incredible figures, such as commander bly
Could you try this process with a regular shiny phase 1 clone? their mouth pieces are not fully painted either
