Love the way you teach And your explanation. Excuse me, but I am old, but to prepare us for the proficiency certificate in English of the university of Cambridge we studied when to use shall and will.

My personal approach to ‘shall’. Shall has got at least three different meanings. 1. It refers to future actions in general and replaces ‚will’ 2. It refers to a very subtle obligation or an obligation someone is willing to follow voluntarily 3. It refers to an obligation in a legal context
It is so amazing how easy it has become learning a new language! thanks to all the native speakers for sharing your knowledge! Greetings from Germany ❤
In the old days of England, these ladies who would never tolerate foreign neighbous speaking wrong English used to invite the neighbours over a tea with a nice invitation card and gave them free English lessons.
In my childhood, we used Eccersley book sets where explaining future tense was just 'I/We shall', and I saw 'shall' fully written in the formal letters. Never in colloquial English. Only as you explained, shall I/we [do something]. My youngest children never saw "shall" in their school books!
Is there any hesitation in the phrase 'The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States'? Maybe another guy can be Commander in Chief?
Thank you Ma'am. I needed the guidance for 'shall'. I have used it sometimes but not very confidently. After you have explained it I shall be more conscious of its use, now. Regards and 🙏 from India.
I remembered the verb “shall” in the song: We shall overcome by Joan Baez now I know some new uses of this verb. As usual thanks Gill, you are fantastic your lessons are fantastic and we love you. Take care and Bye.
The old grammar books gave the example of the man in the pond. He accidentally said "I will drown and no one shall save me!" . So he drowned. (He ought to have said "I shall drown and no one will save me!" had he been hoping that he be saved.)
Dear Ma'am Gill, Your lesson on 'shall' and 'will' are quite interesting as people often get confused while using them in a sentence ! Recently,i had not been well but now i am better ! I am happy to listen to your lectures as it helps to learn and correct our knowledge of English ! Thank you so much ! 😃
Gill, this is with no dout the best corner in all www. Your lovely manner of teaching is untouchable. Every time I wach your lessons I feel a force that push me to have an immersion in english to find the way to speak properly. Thank you very much...indeed.
Gill, thank you for explaining the difference between 'shall' and 'will.' When I was in high school, my English teacher became concerned because my writing included "old" vocabulary like "shan't." I had to update my writing style and vocabulary which I'd learned by reading the classics.
Gill, thanks for the lesson on when to use 'shall' and 'will'. Is, Should I book the tickets? better? Clearly, its is a question not a suggestion that shall conveys.
This has been another interesting lesson. 💜 One thing that stuck with me from one of my English teachers is how they explained that "shall" is used as a stronger/more "confident" way to say "will". What they meant is that "shall" can be use as a substitute to "will" when the person who's speaking has the utmost certainty that they will perform a specific action. P.S.: I'd like to point out that almost no English teacher I had was a native (I'm Italian) and what I wrote is also something from 1-2 decades ago. 😅
Native English speaker here. You're probably right. I've never lived in Britain, but I have lived in America, and I don't think I ever heard anyone say the word shall unless they were making a joke (people might make jokes by using old English words), and definitely didn't hear anyone say "shan't". So in this case, I agree with Gill. Don't worry about shall... there's much better, easier alternatives.
@@carlenger9707 I see. I remember we were taught British English, in fact (all the way from elementary to high school). One of our teachers once also mentioned that what we had been learning, more precisely, was the "standard English" spoken in London (which part of London? That will always be a mystery 😆).
@@carlenger9707 I am from the United States, and I never use the word, shan’t but I still use shall for examples the teacher already went over for suggestions or questions plus I use shall for if I’m going to do something for sure such as, I shall do something, etc.
Ms Gill, thank you so much for another marvelous lesson! Another gulp of the purest water to have! Another convincing bit in the foundation of good English to enjoy! 🙂❤
Hello Gill! Thanks for this lesson. In fact shall reminds me so much of The Ten Commandments. Like Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife and likewise. Thou shalt not steal etc.
Thank you, Gill! It was an amazing explanation. I've just listened "shall" before when people say "Shall we?" Instead of "let's go?". In my mind "shall" was similar as "should" but now I think Shall is more like "let's" in this case "Let's invite the neighbors!" "Shall we invite the neighbors?" Does it have the same intention?
Yes. It's used for suggestions and invitations only with I or WE pronouns. Shall we start dinner? Shall we take our seats on the bus? sort of like suggesting and a little bit commanding at the same time, but in a friendly and polite manner.
It was a very helpful video. I was always confused with the usage of will and shall. I like your voice tone and accent. It is really easy to follow. Thanks a lot!

Good afternoon Gill, thank you very much for all the interesting and useful things you are teaching us!! Could you make some lessons about business English vocabulary, please?
Thanks for the video, Gil. When you spoke of the negative form of shall you pointed out that shan't is pronounced with a long 'a'. Would you mind give a lesson on how to pronounce words like 'can' and 'can't'? Non-native English speakers like myself usually find it hard to distinguish these sounds properly.
Perhaps someone has already pointed some of these things out, but: In the U.S., very few people would use "shan't" at all, but those who do would rhyme it with our usual pronunciation of "can't" instead of using a "broad" a, as you do. Perhaps something like this might also apply to some accents in England or elsewhere. For questions and suggestions, we might use either "shall" or "should." Either "shall" or "must" might be used in formal commands.
