In this lecture Professor Zach Murphy will be teaching you about the physiology of deglutition, simply known as swallowing. The three phases of deglutition will include the oral phase, the pharyngeal phase, and the esophageal phase. We start this video by first talking about the muscles of mastication and how this is important in the formation of a bolus during the oral phase. We then follow that bolus all the way into the esophageal phase where it will eventually be turned into chyme. We hope you enjoy this lecture and be sure to support us below!

I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus ( my dad died of esophageal cancer) and I’m trying to learn all I can about how to prevent it from progressing to cancer. Wow!!! This was my first time watching a Ninja Nerd Lecture, and I am so impressed. I'm in my SLP grad program, taking Dysphagia this summer, and this explanation of deglutition is solid gold.
I never thought swallowing is that complex..thank you, now it really makes sense why we had to learn all these muscles and inervations in anatomy
