My internet dropped out after: “Beware minor spoilers for the following,” and left the buffering symbol on screen. I thought it was an incredibly meta joke for about 3 minutes before checking my WiFi 😂

You can move on now." 30 seconds later, "FOR GODS SAKE END THIS TWISTED CHARADE ALREADY" 30 seconds later, "Log date 7112, it's been 2 and a half minutes of the video pretending to buffer. I fear it may be the entire rest of the video. If I don't make it, tell my wife and kids. . . I don't hold it against Ellen, and always loved her more than them." 30 seconds later, "Wait maybe it actually is buffering. . ." *checks* "Ah yes, well you got me internet. You win this round."

Also there is more. In undertale, after flowey calls you out on killing toriel, when you meet toriel again, she says "what's wrong child? You look like you've seen a ghost." then in the flavor bar is says "*you don't tell her that you saw her die"
Pamber 13 Even more meta: Flowey talks down on the people watching a UA-cam video of a genocide run: "At least we're better than those sickos who sand around and WATCH it happen. Those pathetic people that want to see it but are too weak to do it themselves. I bet someone like that's watching right now aren't they?". That’s next level

Saint Row IV, there are three male voices AND Nolan North. If you pick him he spends the entire game saying things like "I sound like a lot of other videogame characters don't I?" and "That's how Nolan rolls!"
The Enter the Dominatrix DLC for SR4 had all the characters talking about their roles and the history of the DLC.
I also love how when Kinsie at the beginning is telling you how to break free of the first simulation, she says 'just be yourself." and he responds "Be Nolan North. Got it."

Ellen, the most polite vampire in the world. Just because you want to suck the blood from your victims and leave them a lifeless husk, doesn't excuse rudeness.

It makes sense that Vampire Ellen would be fastidious about obtaining consent. It's just a logical extension of how vampires aren't allowed to enter your home unless you invite them in.
Maybe the area around the list video chair counts as Mike's home for vampire purposes.

Edit: Also, turning the 3DS upside down to evolve Inkay into Malamar.
i guess doki doki wouldn't count because it's not really sudden, it's more throughout the entire game. but still, that game had to have taken a sledgehammer to the fourth wall more than just a few times.

Yeah, by roughly two years. I think they just decided the game was too obviously meta compared to the small peek around the 4th wall that these games were doing.

I actually did the zelda one by accident. I closed the DS in rage after 5 days of trying to figure it out, only to hear the puzzle solved jingle pop from the DS. Opened it up and I broke down laughing. The game BROKE ME.
Na the best 4th wall break on Max Payne is where you shoot a speaker in a lift which stops the shitty elevator music and Max says "Thank you"

But you're right. That part about him thinking he's in a videogame, he was hallucinating. He didn't actually break the 4th wall. He did break it with the elevator one you just mentioned

You guys are still right though the elevator seems more like it, but also more ambiguous.
Pony Island has by far one of the greatest fourth-wall breaks I've ever witnessed. During the fight with Asmodeus the very program that challenges you to a battle of concentration messages you via Steam, thus disrupting your concentration and missing the very thing you were looking for. Simply genius.
Oh, you could do an entire video about those kind of games. Ever play Imscared?

@@thebenjcrew Yeah, that's what made it so bad. So long as you have friends on Steam, the game picks a random friend and has them act aghast at the fact you're sending such horrible messages at them. It's trolling you like it's hacked your account. It'd have been even more chilling except it speaks in internet parlance (stuff like omg) and none of my friends do so, so I knew it was fake.
I vividly remember getting that steam notification and having stopping to text my friend what he was talking about. Top 10 gaming moment.
Man that was a creepy/epic moment! And the game does it purposefully to make sure that you 'overlook something'. THE HEX made by the same developer has some similar (in a different way) moments as well.
MG: Solid for PS1, the fight with Psycho Mantis was the one that got me the most. "Oh, you haven't saved in a while?" "I see you like Castelvania" Reading your save files and not to mention what you have to do to beat him.
The Zelda DS one reminds me of the puzzle in the DS game 'Trace Memory' where you had to halfway close the DS and use reflections to solve it. Great game.
I didn't even think of it the first time but in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice right at the start Senua looks into the camera as if you are one of the voices in her head telling her what to do, gave me chills
I remember those moments in the game. When you felt like you were the one judging her, the one she was talking to.
Yeah the manipulation of the fourth wall in that game was beyond brilliant. Although it didn’t particularly come out of nowhere, so maybe not within the purview of this list.

I thought it was great in Batman Arkham Asylum when the Riddler asked if you were looking up how to solve his riddles on the internet.
When that happened to me, I actually hadn't. It was only near the end, when i was looking for the detective mode question marks somewhere outside that I looked something up.
JH Sand151 I remember that. It's right near the end of his puzzles too, when you need to look them up anyway. Brilliant.
The first Scarecrow sequence was a throwback to System Shock, too, wasn't it?

I like how when talking about meta games, Ellen's wearing a shirt that says "Nier Automata T-shirt".
Oh my gosh, the Phantom Hourglass one. I remember getting so annoyed not being able to figure that out and closing my DS out of frustration.
I was going to ask if anyone else "solved" it by closing their DS so they could come back to it later. I reopened the game some 6 hours later and just stared at it baffled at the puzzle having been solved.
Giving Kirby a black hole for a stomach honestly sounds like a lateral move more than a power-up.

Doki doki literature club... most of Monica’s lines are terrifying. And then when she uses your name...
There's also some out of game stuff going on if you pay attention. Like during certain events, look at the character folder where the characters files are held.
I'm surprised that nobody talked about in SCP: Containment Breach, that if you typed in "fourth wall" on SCP-294, and drink it, your character would LITERALLY break the fourth wall.
German Point and click adventure Deponia had you shut down the music off the game so Rufus (the main character) could concentrate.
It´s available in english as well^^

Oh, too bad I didn't remember this in time for the original video's comments (unless someone else did), but Divinity: Original Sin had a lovely meta moment. At one point you come across a couple of wisdom-sharing statues, one of which promises to show you the end of all things. And it actually does show you the end of it all.

You know, I was stumped by the same puzzle in Zelda Phantom Hourglass as well. I spent almost an hour trying to figure out if I missed a item somewhere in the dungeon or something...
Finally I just took it to my Mom because she loves these sort of puzzles... She looked me in the eye after I explained the puzzle and asked, "Really?" like I had just asked her something incredibly obvious, and then made a big show about closing my DS and opening it back up.
The moral of the story is that sometimes it is a good idea to go to a non-gamer to ask for help with games.
Ellen's dimples make my heart melt. She's so damn adorable.

This is not the only time Flowery does something this Meta. If you confront him on your way to Sans during the Genocide route, he will take a crack on people who are watching the player's genocide route right then and there, because they don't have the heart to kill everyone.
Abandoned genocide runs followed by pacifist run too! That is even more creepy in my opinion!

Number 1: every time a game had a character actually tell you want button to press or any other message that should be a system message
Dev left player messages. Sure you don't think much of it in Souls during the tutorial, but as an example in DS2 it sure got to people when they found Navlaan.
That stuff always bugged me. They shifted away from it since I was younger, but Nintendo was always the worst culprit of that.

You missed a great one, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem for the Gamecube.
Phantom Hourglass also had the part where you were told to yell into the mic to show how excited you were, and then the NPC told you that you must have looked ridiculous yelling at a DS, and snapping your fingers by the mic would have done the job too

Don’t forget that Ocelot will (sometimes) know if you are using a turbo controller and Psycho Mantis will read your memory card, change the channel to Hideo, and can mess with your controller. It shouldn’t be called Metal gear solid it should be called Meta gear solid.
I still remember the cut scene from the original Command & Conquer where Kane tells you he knows exactly where you are. I actually had to stop myself from glancing over my shoulder at that moment.
Dude, I had a final boss express his utmost annoyance at a game series worth of me interfering in his plans/universe. Oh, and he would turn his giant eye at me (its a beholder tentacle monster) and just stare right at me. He. Fucking. Knew. And he threatened our universe, and according to end dialogue post death he ascended to our plane of existence. I have to tell myself it wasnt real, its just a game.
Closing the DS to copy a map? Does this mean we can talk about how you evolve the pokemon Inkay by flipping your system upside-down?!

I was hoping that Last Window would have been mentioned instead, there's a puzzle that I never would have guessed to solve by closing the DS. And it's the only one in the game like it!
I can only hear Danisnotonfire and AmazingPhil doing the voices for those characters when I see them now. They've totally created the voices I hear for Undertale.
Fun fact, the MGS2 fourth wall break is actually a reference to a fourth wall break in one of the MSX2 Metal Gear games, where Big Boss attempts the same thing on Snake... Except it's not a simulation or an AI, it's the real Big Boss.
I remember back in the day when "Drawn to Life" was a thing, one of the characters in the town talks about what "God" looks like.
She imagined him as pretty much what a character from INSIDE the DS would see.
A window, manipulating "our world" with a magic staff.

I'm pretty certain the character who said that was Jowee - so a "he", haha! Thanks for bringing Drawn to Life up, it is still to this day my little brother and I's favourite game. We played it all the time together when we were little!
how about the time in Batman: Arkham Asylum when Scarecrow's drug "resets" the game and everything is glitched out?
That really messed with me the first time I played through the game. Scarecrow was one of my favorite parts of that game!!

I spent a full 20 minutes trying to figure out how to close the 2ds in phantom hourglass
Epic Battle Fantasy 5.
- The final boss directly threatens the player.
- The secret areas are glitched parts of the game memory.
- The main party at the end watches and comments on their own futures after the ending slides.
What about spec ops the line? Having your user name in the opening credits made me really confused
This brings to mind the game Ar No Surge: Ode to an Unborn Star, which continually references the fact that the male lead is 'not acting like himself' and 'it's like he's being controlled by an outside force'. The outside force in question being, of course, the player. And if you get the true end, two of the characters talk to you directly, saying that they hope you can meet in the 'real world'.
I want to nominate Voodoo Vince for incredible self-awareness. The main character, Vince the Voodoo Doll is poking fun at video game clichés and tropes during most cinematics, and child me thought that it was the best thing ever

My brain went to dressing gown as well. And I played earthbound but not undertale, so I was not alarmed, then realized I was wrong, and not sure right now if I want an evil flower wearing a dressing gown or if I need to nap. I'll ask mr. Saturn.
Maybe you were bonetrousled? I hate to be a thorn in the backside, but Flowey in a dressing gown sounds like a blooming nightmare.

Actually, the part you mentioned for MGS2 was even double- meta for people who are aware of the latin names of the human intestines. The rooms you pass through are all named after parts of your gut (Jejunum, Ileum, Colon, etc.). We don't have to discuss however where the boss fight did take place, have we?
P.S. Never noticed though, that Max was literally "framed" for murder in this game :D

One I particularly enjoyed is in Divinity: Original Sin (the first one). Somewhere in the game there's a part where someone offers to tell you your future. If you ask them 'Show me how it all ends', the end credits of the game start playing.
It got the most meta for me at 13:03 when Andy threw his cup and I heard it spill next to my laptop IRL....and flinched as if to reach and catch it.

@@JachAnen Andy's snow episodes and insights into the true nature of Krampus lead me to believe that he's a Malkavian. Then again, his Hitman skills scream Assamite. Regardless, Ellen's Ventrue (see any Overcooked playthrough - classic Ventrue control complex), Luke's Toreador (impeccably groomed and really into music), Jane's Tremere (the most sciency of the clans, plus evil warlock is adhering to the theme set by Prudence) and Mike's Ravnos (his irresistable vice is blowing things up). John and James are Lasombra, which is why they so rarely show up on film.

The DS game "Trace Memory" had some puzzles that revolved around the DS itself. I remember there was one where you had to half close it so that one screen reflected onto the other, forming a whole picture or map or something.
It was the wood stamp puzzle I spent a whole week on that before I closed the ds during the puzzle by mistake
There was a moment in one of the Skylanders games, the one with Kaos’s mom, during her boss fight she disappeared and Eon’s voice said “only a portal master can find her” and my brother and I (we were both playing) were confused until I saw the portal light flicker and removed our Skylanders from the portal. There she was!

In Metal Gear Solid 2 if you don't answer the colonels calls where the radar is shown gets replaced by a video of a women sleeping.
The metal gear solid 2 one REALLY freaked me out. It was like 1am and I was so freaked I had to turn the game off
I remember that one from Phantom Hourglass. Little 10 year old me tried drawing that crest on the map, and then sailing to it, then i couldn't catch the treasure, so i sailed back to the temple and got to the map again, only to end up frustrated and closing my DS out of anger, then opening it a little later to see that it had transferred. I was in major shock.

Also there was a point in Nier with your second playthrough where you collect a weapon from the junk shop for the second time. Nier says something like ‘don’t we already have this?’ And Weiss replies ‘yes that’s how it works the second time around’ lol
Can we talk about Oxenfree?? Where to get the best ending on new game+ your character Alex, that now remembers your last playthroughs has to [SPOILER] warn the Alex of the next playthrough not to go to the island.

Oh boy Phantom Hourglass. That had to be my intro into the meta games. Oddly I played the game over and over to complete all of the game.

You brought MGS2 and that brought back memories of MG4 when you return to Shadow Moses. You reach a point where Otacon calls you, telling you to load the 2nd disc only to remember you are now using a blueray disc. I was surprised when that conversation came up but laughed soon after.
I am SO glad that the moment with Flowy was on here - genuinely, that moment freaked me out so badly that I literally haven't returned to play Undertale since. It's a shame, because I know it's an incredible game, but games being too self-aware gives me the heebie-jeebies...

There was a similar puzzle to The Phantom Hourglass in Another Code: Two Memories on the DS, with Woodcuts and a pad, to complete a scene.
Thank you for pointing this out, because I thought I was the only one who knew this. As soon as I saw that puzzle in this video, I thought the same thing but couldn't remember the name of the game. Two Memories was really brilliant for its time.
You're welcome, I adore Another Code, to the point I make an effort to replay it every few months. Such a fun game, and the side puzzles like the woodcut one are optional entirely, unless you want the GOOD ending.

One game I always thought was amusingly meta was, "The Bards Tale - Resnarkled" on PC. The narrator can talk and insult you. Bard hears the Narrator and interacts with him
You hear Bard and Narrator, but the Bard can't hear you..
So basically, the Narrator tells yo how to play, the bard hears about using mouses and key thingies, and thinks the Narrator has lost it...
"Oh, it's bad luck, to be you...."

Upon completing the campaign in Assault Android Cactus you unlock the main antagonist Liquorice, as a playable character. After doing that go to the Collider level where you fight Liquorice and you'll get a very meta conversation.
There's also that one mission in The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine.
You know, the one where Roach can speak and Geralt asks why she appears out of nowhere when he whistles, but will get caught on fence posts and stuff. It was shockingly meta for a game that really doesn't break character

Before Phantom Hourglass, Another Code already had a puzzle where you had to close the DS to stamp something. Took me a while to figure this one out.
Brought back memories when I had to do the same thing in Phantom Hourglass later ^^
MARVEL v CAPCOM 3, isn't the first time Wade has used the health bar as weapon in games. If you ever played enough of MARVEL's AVENGERS ALLIANCE on Facebook and bought him, that was one of his attacks he would hit you with.

That 'DS Stamping thing'... I encountered that trick for the first time while playing a game called something like "Trace Memory"... I was stumped on that puzzle for days... till one day, I was staring at it trying to figure out how the hell I was supposed to operate it, & I got called to do a favor & I closed it into Sleep Mode to protect it till my return... I returned to find the Puzzle half solved. I stared at it wondering what the hell coulda caused it while I was away till I realized... closing the DS then reopening it was the only thing that coulda happened, so I closed & reopened it again to a solved Puzzle. My mind was blown that the DS was capable of such a fancy schmancy trick...
SAME. I was so stumped. I rubbed, poked and did everything with that paper.
A few more:
The World Ends With You also did the "put in sleep mode to progress" thing with post-game content. One Pig Noise you encountered was asleep and would run away if you hit it with any attack. See, *it* was asleep, so to beat it, you had to put the game to sleep by closing the DS.
Then there was Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard. Not everyone's cup of tea, I know, but the titular character *knows* he's in a video game and the whole game is about his quest to not get permanently killed off in the "latest" installment of his game series. The final level is even an assault at the video game studio "producing" his latest game. Not even sure it had a fourth wall, honestly.
Kirby doesn't keep me awake at night, all I do is repeat to myself, Kirby isn't real and Kirby can't hurt me Kirby isn't real and Kirby can't hurt me, I do this until I fall asleep usually only takes an hour or so

This one is really old, but how about "X-Men" for the Sega Genesis? The premise is that some of the X-Men are trapped in a series of Danger Room simulations (thanks to a virus uploaded by Magneto); Professor Xavier telepathically contacts your character every now and then to update them on the situation.
At the end of the 5th level, Xavier figures out that the simulation has to be rebooted from the inside, so he instructs your character to "reset the computer". The thing is, there aren't any buttons or computer consoles to interact with at that point in the game; you have to physically hit the 'reset' button on the Sega Genesis itself, which (instead of resetting the game) lets you out of the Danger Room and allows you to take the fight to Magneto in the final level.
Pokémon X and Y made something similar to the Zelda game in this video. In order to evolve your Inkay into a Malamar, you'd have to level your Inkay to level 30 while holding your system up-site-down.
