  • The importance of European elections has long been neglected by many people. But the more crises and wars Europe faces, the more important the decisions made in Brussels and Strasbourg become. Whether it is about industrial policy or defense, refugee issues, aid for Ukraine or the positioning in the dispute between the USA and China - the EU and its institutions are increasingly becoming the decisive authority in Europe. In the new episode of the VDMA Industry Podcast: European Elections 2024 - "A turning of the tide?", Janis Emmanouilidis, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Studies at the European Policy Center (EPC) and Holger Kunze, Director VDMA Euro Office, discuss the ambitions of the various parties in the European election campaign, the role of industry and the consequences of a "shift to the right" for the EU.
For many companies, it is also of great importance how the EU intends to further shape and advance its major "Green Deal" project after the election. The overarching goal of climate neutrality by 2050 will not change, explains VDMA expert Kunze. But the focus could shift - both social and economic aspects are likely to play a greater role in the Green Deal, he says. In addition, defense and security issues will become even more important for EU policy, adds EPC Director Emmanouilidis. But the gap between announcement and implementation will probably remain large, he predicts.
