Hi liz you can watch whatever channel you like with or without a license don't bother cutting your ariels or cables.. watch what you want to watch.. I've been watching TV without a license for 20 years
Same here. I've got 16 yrs to catch up with you.... hahaha
@@michaelwarner4323 😂😂
Is that all? Only 20 years? ...........
20 years hahaa I love it
LMAO love this
No they don't know! Only if you tell them 🤦♀️never talk to them just shut that door 🚪🤣🤣
As communications officers from the British Army are always saying, if the BBC had detector vans capable of such technology, then the Amy would also have it, and they don't...........
Another threatening letter from TV Licencing. Same as one I received a few weeks back..
Defund
Defund
Defund
How crazy is it that we should be frightened to be caught watching our own tv in our own house. So called Politicians are letting us down with the continuation of this ridiculous 'law.'
All the man in the van with the swinging roof rack knows is what you tell him, there is nothing in there apart from his packed lunch and a flask of tea, the detector van is nothing more than transport for the BBC sales reps and somewhere for them to sit and cry into their hankies when they don't get a sale
Not entirely true they use cameras to detect light patterns reflected from your window and a computer to analyse it to detect which station you are watching but only with line of sight so close the curtains and you are safe. Also if they knock send them away it would not stand up in court so don't talk to them
My TV licence ends today even though I haven't watched 'live' TV for six weeks but still watch programmes I want to watch on Catch-up.
You don't need a license for catch up. Only live dude
Only if the goon looks through your window 😂 stop paying the vile bbc cancel your tv licence remember NO CONTACT NO CONTRACT.😊
You still get plants trying to catch you out. 😆
Why do we have to have a license to say watch ITV which is funded by adverts or any other channel apart fro BBC
nothing is stopping me
The tvl fee applies to all live tv. The BBC just happen to get the lion's share of it because they are not permitted to supplement their income from advertising.
I can see another way someone might be accidently caught...
In the unlikely chance that they had stumbled onto a you tube/other site live stream and got a visit, they would be breaking the law and subject to prosecution ...
Again that would only apply if you allow them to enter your home for them to see it. Collecting the evidence of it by sound is tricky you would need an actual recording and a cell phone mic is not great at picking up distant sound sources it is after all intentionally designed to have higher gain at close range as it is built as a personal microphone to pick up the user and maybe those in their immediate vicinity so distant sources tend to need to be very loud for it to pick up much.
You can watch youtube livestreams, as long as they're not simultaneously being broadcast on live TV. The important thing to remember is that it's live TV broadcasts and BBC iplayer that you need a licence for. You can actually use the BBC iPlayer legally without a licence as long as it's just S4c ( welsh c4) that you are accessing. Although S4c is Welsh language, it's well worth a look, they have some very good music programmes.
It's technically possible to see what's on a TV/monitor screen from a distance away, so yes, they could tell without being in your house, but only if they had the kit. TV detector vans aren't real, but from a technical standpoint there's nothing stopping anyone from making one. They could also trace any iPlayer connections if they really wanted.
My tv is not transmitting Bbc1,2,3,4,most of the other programmes. I am not unduly worried as we have Now tv and prime. Have they turned us off? I object to the ethics/biased opinions of BBC that’s why I haven’t paid the license.
A TV is a *receiver* not a transmitter, so a so called TV detector van could only detect a signal being transmitted from an appliance, not received.
But with today's smart tvs, who knows what info they're sending back to base over the internet?
I used to take strong migraine meds and it made me confrontational. A friend and I had flats opposite each other in a block. I could see my friends telly from the open street doors of our flats when mine wasn't licensed, across the communal hallway. I phoned up TVL and told them I was watching TV, had the remote and could adjust volume, change channel etc. from my unlicensed flat and gave them my address. I told them, come and bust me, as it would appear I was doing something wrong. Nothing happened. 😐
Sounds like the property had a communal licence. One licence covers up to 15 flats in a block.
@@davidspear9790 not in our case, each flat needed one. We had one visit from a goon and I offered him out. Can't fight my way out of a wet paper bag but Cafergot does this to a person: nearly got arrested on a few occasions when on this stuff. Fortunately, my migraine days are long gone. Thanks for comment.
The close the door advice is fine if you live in a flat. But what if you live in a house can they start looking through your front windows?
If you live in a flat Can your landlord let them in against your wishes?
No, tennants have rights and a landlord cannot even enter his own property. He needs to go to court to get an eviction notice in order to reclaim his own property.
Probably.
If a goon knocks on the door then they shouldn't need to come in to check if you have a TV tell em if they want evidence to use the detector van 🤣. The BBC's own adverts say their detector vans can tell what your watching and which room your TV is in removing any need for the goons to enter your property or even knock on your door in the first place. We should start calling the BBC's bluff and use their own lies against em. Get the door shut. Or better yet invest in a camera doorbell and that way you can find out who it is without needing to ever open it at all 🙂
I thought detector vans worked only with the old analogue signals.
Thanks again my man !!!!.
Hi Jon can I watch sky cinema without a tv licence seeing as A) I pay for it through sky and B) I can choose any movie at any time so therefore I would say its not being broadcast live to the wider public.
The Pluto app has films can I/we watch without a tv licence? I know it starts on live broadcast which shouldn't be watched without a licence.
I did a video on pluto, you can see it here. ua-cam.com/video/353jnfE5htM/v-deo.html
You say TV detector vans can't see what we are watching but the tech we use is getting better. Sky tv can tell what your watching because it is interactive and its only a matter of time before the BBC get their hands on the same tech. The change in registration could be a move in that direction, As well as push UK channels it could be feeding what you watch back, possibly not fool proof but a step nearer finding people braking the law.
Sky would be able to tell which channel at 1 time when it was mandatory to have a phone connection to the Sky box. That hasn't been the case for years now. They would have no clue now unless you have an internet connection. Then again, why would they want to??
I keep telling you...they have to get you to admit it....and if you don't they got nothing....Their Rules. So stop telling half truths.
The problem is if you pull the aerial out of tbe wall you will ALSO NO LONGER BE ABLE TO RECEIVE those channels that you pay to watch.
The reason for this is that ALL transmissions require the use of an aerial AND a LAN (RJ45) connection from your router.
The lan or network or wifi connection to your router is used to determine if you are a subscriber or not. The signal itself comes to your TV via your aerial usually from an "aerial farm" that your broadband provider has subscribed you too
This method of access is called a "CAM" or conditional access module. The condition of course being "are you a subscriber"
Don't believe me, try it and see where all your channel disappear to 🤠
I dont have an aerial, and still watch all the TV on demand services.
@c.m.s5071 how do you get a signal.with no aerial?
cheers
I dont see the point in cutting off your aerial if you dont talk to these Salesmen er sorry Officers !
In the good old days when the OLD TV`s used a CRT (cathode ray tubes) these required a very high voltage for it to function, this voltage is driven from a rectifier which emitters RF (radio) frequencies which is what the TV detector vans used with the directional ariels to pin-point. It did not matter which TV station you were viewing at the time as the CRT rectifier only emitted the same RF. However, modern TV`s have no need for a rectifier as there is no longer a CRT
The technology that the detector vans used is much the same as today’s car trackers for locating stolen cars. But that`s another story
@Steve Gee When you are an old fart like myself that worked on value TV long before the magic transistors you would have known of the advance technologies on the day which has its detection history in the 2nd world war, used by the Germans to triangulate the resistance broadcasts of very low powered transmitters. Back in the days of UHF TV transmissions engineers again leaned on harmonics to allow a single system to cover the full range from low VHF to higher UHF frequencies. A pair of 6′ long log-periodic spiral antennas were used, mounted on top of the van, which could be varied in spacing to effectively tune different frequencies. In practice, the antennas would be pointed towards a row of houses, while the van was slowly driven along the street. The beam pattern of the antenna pair would show seven distinct lobes on a CRT inside the van when a TV was detected.
@Steve Gee That means I can watch Columbo :)
It can be done, even by you (short distance) but UA-cam keep deleting my comments on what to look up

Thanks for the electronics lesson.
They used to USED TOO but the days of analogue have long gone

Hi Jon
Got a letter from Tv Licensing saying because I’ve not replied to their letters I’m going to get a visit and a threat of them applying for a search warrant?
It's a bluff. NOTHING will happen
I'm not so sure.@@MikeEves
I don't watch any TV channels anymore
What about streaming on a laptop? I mean on illegal sports streaming sites. How do they know other then seeing it in person?
Hi ChilliJonCarne, Can I listen to Freeview RADIO on my TV? That is, going licence free, I've deleted all the TV channels but left the radio channels accessible on Freeview.
yep. the clue is in the title, tv licence. Listen to all the radio you like, even bbc stations are ok
@@TVLicenceStop sorry, have to correct you - BBC radio stations are not “OK”. They’re bloody awful biased left wing propaganda peddlers 🤣
No.
Do need a licence to watch +1 channels such as channel 5+1?
Oh, and radio channels such as Classic FM? I need to keep the aerial in for those
@@sarahgardiner1649 You can indeed keep the aerial connected as you don't need a licence to tune into any radio channel on your TV set - just don't watch a live TV broadcast.
Its time for Britain to sack the BBC and I don't mean sleep with them!.
My problem is that I pay Virgin £184 a month, mainly to watch the MotorCycle Racing. Most of the time if the tele is on in the evening my Mrs. is watching Netflix. When she did have a licence for being an OBE we hated how the bias was on the BEEB so made sure that it was never on that channel. Now I'm wondering if watching races a month later on BT sport that I need a TV licence? If I did then it will all be scrapped and I'll go to a pub or mates to watch it. The only reason we have this expensive package, is that the BBC lost it's coverage of this and got outbid by BT. Suspect they were a bit complacent there.
in the seventies the vans where empty it was psychological effect to fool you ..my tv works well without a license there is no law that says you need a license . because people pay the fee they have got use to paying, and believe it is the norm you have all been fooled our law is common law show me where it says under common law you need a license to watch tv ACTS and StATUTES DO NOT OVER RULE COMMON LAW.they are there to collect revenue . if you are not man enough to send the goons off pay your tax .
In NO c
Oddly enough, AFAIK, an aerial feed is the ONLY source they can't accurately monitor. Though I wholly agree with the advice to disconnect the aerial once and for all if you don't wish to pay the TV Tax.
But - depending on how seriously you take internet security - almost everything accessed via the Internet is constantly monitored.
That's why most TVs have internet connections these days. It's not entirely for your benefit.
Though to be fair, the problem there lies less with the BBC than with an entire IT industry that regards you as a free asset and your data as a tradeable product.
If I want to watch live TV as it is broadcast (although I don't because it is all crap) I will do so and the BBC are not going to tell me what I can and can't watch without paying them first because if they came to my door after identifying themselves the conversation wouldn't go any further than not interested goodbye after which my door would be closed ending their so called investigation
Can someone tell me I dont watch any of the BBC channels, or iplayer or anything live. i have a box where there a few chanels for free. Can I watch them without paying?
Long as it's catch up and not "live to air" then yes. No license required.
What about if you're streaming it ?
they can see how many people are watching a stream, they can see the ip address of each watcher, but they cannot easily connect your ip address with your house's postal address. To do that they would need to approach your internet provider with evidence that the ip address is involved in wrongdoing, but they cannot know that ip address is an unlicensed household and therefore involved in wrongdoing unless they already got the postal address information. It's a catch-22 for them!
@@Dave-bu6bc 100% right. It's a shame that most people just don't understand this.
Take the ariel away then you can't watch catchup tv which your allowed to do.
I've always been curious as to how they get the numbers, as in so many millions watched this programme and so many millions on that programme, I don't watch TV but you see on the likes of news pop ups saying things like 10 million viewers watched strictly come dancing and do many millions watched x factor etc,,,
they pay some viewers to log their viewing habits, and then they guess based upon those figures.
@@Dave-bu6bc i think there are about 10,.000 volunteers and they then multiply it. However for the iplayer etc they can count the number of times it is streamed etc.
They look at the power consumption in the national grid and the spike of people putting the kettle on at the adds or end of the program
@@cliffhulcoopofficial8075 I wonder how many of those 'volunteers' don't have a TV Licence?......
I don't pay so got no say..Fook em...🍺🥃🍷🎉🍸🍾🍹🎊🎉🍸🍺Party Time..One Happy OAP..😁😁..
I may be wrong,as I invariably am, but until proven otherwise I am convinced that the smart tv/device/phone whatever, is capable of informing the bbc, (not the "goons") if I am watching their programmes.
If a simple phone call is being listened to by some member of the CCP, then it isn't beyond the wit of man, (in this case the bbc), to see if I "inadvertently" watch their programmes.
Seems odd that I never receive a letter or call from them, yet others are being hounded constantly. That is because I have, as you said, removed the iplayer app and the aerial.
Those who still watch, without a licence, are doing the war effort no favours as they think we are all doing it.
Some people might be logged into iPlayer on a laptop or Smart TV so it'd be a good idea to logout or remove the account. Which made me think, what happens if a friend visits who does have a TV Licence at their home - can they log into iPlayer using their account so that it could be used legally during their visit? It's all too complicated isn't it?
Well if they have a licence surely they can watch live broadcasts whoever’s house they are in; I’ve asked this question many times here, but no answers.
@@barneybiggles I would have though so too! Makes sense as long as they logout afterwards I suppose
@@barneybiggles I'm pretty sure I've read that you can't use an unlicenced property's wifi to access live tv or iplayer.

It’s not the property that holds or pays for the licence it’s an individual that pays, seems logical to me anyway.

They must know that if they where listening to what your watching that is an invasion of privacy or even looking through your window like a peeping tom, you can be arrested for that i think!!
where?
Of course they can the country could not so fxxked if they did not watch BBC 😉
This guy is too scared
This is the what came first the chicken or the egg scenario. If they could tell what you were watching there would be more prosecutions, however that might just give game away if they could tell what you were watching. To prosecute you they need to either see you watching live TV or by admitting it your self. With new smart TVs who knows how much info they are sending out when connected to the Internet. So can they or can't they and that's a question that nobody but the bbc know the answer to.
Even if they could do that, in order to get a conviction, they would have to fully disclose what they did and how it worked to the court, and what evidence was obtained. Even if they were capable, they wouldn't want to admit to spying on the general public, it would be extremely embarrassing to them.
I had a email saying my address aa been watching bbc iPlayer,so they can tell ?
That's fake, they are just trying to make you panic and pay, they haven't got a clue .
If you're dumb enough to use BBC i-player they could in theory catch you. Best to delete your BBC account altogether as soon as you cancel your licence.
Why would you get rid of your aerial then you would have no TV at all????
Not really as you can access them On Demand and through streaming services
@TV License Stop Love your Videos Jon... You are 100% Right - They cannot tell what you are watching on TV... HOWEVER, There is a small cavate
I have said before that when watching BBC iPlayer - They actually DO HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY to monitor who is watching and when... They just wont use it as people would stop using iPlayer o use a VPN... And having someone enter a license Number before being able to use it... Well, that's going the "Subscription Route" then and they don't want that!
The other is something that affects us all in some ways - Special Events! We have the Coronation of King Charles III coming up... And while they cannot tell what you are watching on TV... They do have a Sneaky Little Tactic they like to employ - The Power Grid!
Especially notable during big sports events such as the World Cup, Capita watch the Energy Consumption in areas where many are unlicensed as when Half Time comes, There is almost always a SPIKE in Electricity Consumption as Fans pop off to put the Kettle on!
But once again, They don't KNOW that you are watching anything UNLESS YOU TELL THEM! They do watch the Power Usage though to target areas... And with the Coronation coming up - Yo can bet your arse they are going to be looking for Spikes!
what about ifollow the footy games from the efl
After I cancelled my licence, I also deleted my BBC iPlayer account as the app remains on my smart TV and I don't even want the chance of accidentally opening it up. Not because I am afraid of the BBC licence goons finding out, but I really, really don't like the BBC. I have never plugged an aerial into my tv and it is tucked away about 3 meters from my TV. I had a Virgin Media box, but that has gone back.
Its not an aerial its an antenna!!
What is?
It's impossible to tell what channel you are watching, as the signal comes from the ether. It's possible to tell what you watching from a streaming service over the Internet though. Just like radio signals, no one can tell what station you are tunned to. Spies still transmit coded messages over shortwave radio, as it is impossible to know who the recipient’s intended location. It is possible to locate who sent the transmission through Radio Direction Finding technology, but never the recipient.
There is a way, but every time I tell you how even you can do it, UA-cam delete my comment
tempest s,d,r
You do have to wonder with todays technology and the fact that some smart tvs have a built in camera and as you say if the arial is in and for some reason you have registered your tv im sure they could watch you ,,,,,,,i wont be buying a sky glass tv according to tbe adverts its smarter than a smart tv ???? Way to scary for me
Ive only just got my beta max working 😂👍🏼
Why would you even watch any of the BBC crap? There’s more than several lifetimes’ worth of high quality stuff on UA-cam, even without repeats! On every subject imaginable and from global content providers from major studios to individual contributors.
I told you Mr Chilli, you have had to start making things up. Run out of real stuff.
I hope one day they do invent technology to detect if your watching Live broadcast.
1. Those that do watch but don't pay a license makes it worse for those that don't watch and have canceled, it's why those goons are ring pieces to people they don't trust people.
2. They would find personally I only watch youtube and netflix as do thousands of others who canceled. Would save them coming to the door.
3. My ariels cut, tv tuner on back of tv crimped and LMB removed on Satelite dish so they could see right away I physically couldn't watch live broadcast.
4. I don't have any tv devices under the tv to watch tv so there is no cable to plug into because there are no devices or cable.
Inventing that technology would save us from headaches since if they could detect and prove they could do it from afar and not bother anyone by coming at your door.
I knew 2 years prior to canceling my license i wouldn't miss live tv because I never watched live tv in the 2 years prior to canceling so I would welcome such a technology.
People that cancel and still watch live broadcast does make it difficult on people who genuinely don't watch live broadcasts and should be fined and prosecuted imho even though I loathe the BBC.
STOP PAYING THE BBC TAX AND USE THE MONEY SAVED TO HELP PAY YOUR ENERGY BILLS LIKE I HAVE JUST DONE
I don't know the source but I've put it in Google 🤔🤔😂😂
How can TV Licensing prove you are watching TV 2020?
They work by detecting the electromagnetic signature that your television gives off. They are so accurate that they can tell you where in the house the TV is, and they can indeed see the channel you are watching.
I bet they even know you're watching 'Columbo' on ITV in the living room! Haha! The old jokes are the best!
@@mda5003 Those Keith Floyd cooking programs were the best along with Columbo of course. But we needed a tv license back then. I always remember as a nipper my parents would mention about the TV detection van but never ever seen one.
@@wurzel1873 They only drove those 'empty' vans around roads where they knew people didn't have a TV licence just to scare them into rushing to the Post Office to buy one.

@@siypic Jon's already said that no one has ever been found guilty and prosecuted on the grounds due to this method. It was just something to put the frighteners up you.

What a silly question. Of course they can tell if you're watching TV and what you are watching on your television set. They have those special TV detector vans! Be warned that some of these vans are disguised like regular or ordinary vans! As John has rightfully advised: if you *don't* hold an up to date *TV Licence* *DON'T* WATCH ANY *LIVE* TV! OR BBC IPlayer! then you won't fall foul of the law!
You can watch i-player as long as you don't watch it live.
@@numerouno7079 Well you used to be able to watch non live programes without a license, but it seems they changed the rules. Since 2016, you also need a TV licence to watch or download on-demand or catch-up programmes on BBC iPlayer. Would be nice if they informed people
You cannot watch BBC iplayer if you do not have a licence. You can watch any catch-up service though.
@@TheTimeProphet The Government gave the BBC that concession as well as an increase in the licence fee back in 2015 on the condition they funded the 'free' licence for the over 75s. Now that the BBC has reneged on the deal I will never ever pay them a licence fee ever... and I'm not even over 75!
