That's the game's way to make us understand her motivation for what she did, while also letting us know it did not work for her... But something changed on DAY 1. The nightmare was still there but now instead of her dead father she saw the "dead" kids she could still save. Did just that, and for the first time in 4 years she had a very calm, peaceful dream and a good, healthy sleep. She's finally healed. However, a different kind of nightmare is awaiting her on DAY 3. The storytelling is just top shelf in this game!

Abby fought the Rat King in the hospital basement. It's a combination of infected fused together.
