    Worth noting: this steel has high grindability and is quick to sharpen, making it a lot easier to get a dead flat bevel. The longer it takes to set your bevel, the more chance there is for some variation. But, you CAN absolutely get a bevel this flat freehand on even high carbide steels, it just takes more time and patience. Be on the lookout for more freehand sharpening tips posted soon.

      Jdavis882 - Knife Sharpening and Reviews Man, would love to just see you sharpen from start to finish, your progression with each stone, technique, etc. I’m getting better, but still struggle with the push stroke and what to do with my wrist as I approach the belly and tip. Also saw your comment recently that you no longer go for a burr with each stone (and maybe not even with first stone) so want to see how you now approach it. Let’s go!

      MrEric0822 ahh I gotcha. I can definitely do that man. Check back in every once in a while and ask how close I am to posting it. It’ll keep me motivated to get it done. Haha!

      Jdavis882 - Knife Sharpening and Reviews I would love to see a video like that to! I struggle with the same things in my free hand sharpening, my stone progression probably isn’t the best either. So yeah I would learn a ton from a video like that. Great job on the videos and content to man!

    If you freehand you will have a very very minimal convex. The hand don’t lay at a perfect edge from heal to tip. I’m one of the best freehanders out there. And I can’t make a complete flat.

    • @jdavis882
      @jdavis882  4 роки тому +3

      Definitely! But you can certainly make it flat enough that there is no perceptible convex to the naked eye, as in this video. I have been freehanding for about 13 years now and I am just now where I can lay an edge that has no visible convexity. Although I believe that if you know certain tips and tricks it can happen a LOT sooner than that. That’s the video I plan to make.

      Jdavis882 - Knife Sharpening and Reviews now that I agree with completely. I thought you meant like a V bevel from like a edge pro flat lol. Check out some of my vids. I come about a bit after all that happened to you.

      I mean....I’m not back to it like I used to be making 7 videos a week. But I do plan on bringing this channel back to life and posting videos as much as I can. I don’t get any revenue from this channel at all so I can’t treat it like my job. But I do enjoy the community and sharing my opinions/ideas. So I’ll keep posting!

    Drives me crazy when people insist that free hand sharpening has at least some convexing. Gggrrrr....

      I'm guilty of that. It's just always what I have seen, and experienced. However, I am open to being wrong, and learning :)

      There is still convex to the edge

    • @jdavis882
      @jdavis882  4 роки тому +2

      Jef Jewell there will still be *some* convexity no doubt. It’s just a matter of how much. I consider “dead flat” to be an edge that has no visible convexity, and reflects like evenly from shoulder all the way to apex. That is definitely doable! I have seen your videos though, not sure I can teach you much honestly. You’re great at sharpening!

    Cubic boron or diamonds on the Sharpmaker? I'm looking to get a knife in a harder steel like M390 or M4. Or is there a better option for freehanding? I've had some luck with freehanding carbon steels like Opinels and 1095.

    Hello,
    I’m not biggest fan of flat edges but I know it is almost impossible for most people doing so on the stones. great job.
    ----------
    quite unrelated to this video;
    Sharpening is a big part of my life. I have all fancy naniwa stones (all diamonds and all chosseras), rods, strops (I make them actually) , compounds, diamond pastes ... So my definition of sharpness is a whole different level than %99.99 of people out there. But there is this knife (lionsteel rok g) in m390 that I got 3 days ago. All these days whenever I found time I sharpened it. Didn’t satisfy me so I started over with other tricks and methods. Now it is sharp but after all me into it, still not super sharp with my standards even though I slightly modified its initial grind.
    Do you have any recommendation by any chance?

    • @jdavis882
      @jdavis882  4 роки тому +1

      Hmm interesting. So the m390 blade on your new knife just isn’t coming up to sharpness despite doing your normal sharpening process? A couple of questions: 1.) Have you ever sharpened a steel like m390 that has a fair amount of carbides? 2.) Are you 100% sure the burr has been removed? (They can be stubborn sometimes, I’m sure you know) 3.) Have you tried to completely blunt the edge, like rubbing the edge on a stone, then resharpening? Sometimes the very edge of knives can be fatigued or weak from the factory, and they have a hard time getting sharp and maintaining their edge. Sometimes it’s beneficial to blunt that edge completely and resharpen it, getting into “fresher” steel for lack of a better word. I’m sure we can figure this out!

      Jdavis882 - Knife Sharpening and Reviews Jdavis882 - Knife Sharpening and Reviews Thanks a million bro. You are amazing. In fact this is my very first m390, and before this I had slightly challenged by n695. Yes, I remove burr carefully. But never got it fully blunt. That’s the key. Thanks man, you are great 🔪✨

    Thats impressive ive myself have never tried as i always blend the edge into the face of the knife so the edge goes smoothly into the rest of the blade

    I think the reason you disagree is because people mean different things by the word flat. Kind of like a wooden work bench is flat, but so is a kitchen bench top, also surface ground steel is flat or a machinists surface block. Yet they are all different levels of flat. If a sheet of something is only one atom thick that is as flat as you can go.
    I belive when most people say that they are pretty much meaning perfectly flat (to the atom basically). I doubt anybody would deny you can get it 'flat' as perceived by the eye.

    • @jdavis882
      @jdavis882  4 роки тому

      I think a lot of them do mean perceptibly flat, simply because most freehand edges are noticeably and visibly convex due to rocking. But I agree a freehand edge is never going to be perfectly, measurably flat.

  • @Zayaraq
    @Zayaraq 4 роки тому

    the question is what does flat mean for you? if it is that you can hold the angle with 0.0° variance, then no it is not possible free hand and your knife is not flat by that standard. If flat means that there is no convexity visible for the eye then yes ofc it's possible. There will still be variance in your strokes while sharpening, this is just human. Not saying it will have a huge impact on performance ofc. But you can get a blade pretty flat by hand.

    • @jdavis882
      @jdavis882  4 роки тому +1

      Flat is no visible or perceptible convex to the edge.

  • @TheSebtrain
    @TheSebtrain 4 роки тому

    Pretty impressive man. Totally agree about the quicker you can set the bevel the flatter it will be when finished. I seem to do a better job on all my knives with ‘softer’ steel

    • @jdavis882
      @jdavis882  4 роки тому

      Definitely. The more wear resistant steels are definitely more challenging. Not sure I could make it “perfect” with a high carbide steel....but you definitely don’t have to end up with a.m convex edge like some people tend yo say/assume.

    I think it gets harder as you go higher in the grits, i find it harder anyway. might just be that my high grit stones dont give as much feedback

    • @jdavis882
      @jdavis882  4 роки тому

      It definitely gets harder with higher grits. The higher you go, the less feedback the stones give you. It makes it a lot more difficult, you’re right.
