This is just AMAZING period footage. Whenever I see something like this I feel genuinely lucky to live in the UA-cam era. The things I probably would never have seen otherwise.
Cameras (be it still or dedicated video or still with video are humans modern time machines - if photoshop isn't involved)
In the future i can relive these stuff probably.
It's a fabulous documentary, on par with anything I saw in class during film school.

Ford v Ferrari recreated this scene beautifully, I hope everyone has plans to see that movie
I'm definitely going to see that movie!
I seen it👌😩
Really good movie. Although I do prefer the foreign title of Lemans 66 because it better describes the film, wasn't really a whole lot about Ferrari in the film, it felt more like Ford vs Ken Miles.

Ken Miles got robbed!! The Triple Crown should rightfully have been his!!
Shelby later said in an interview its something he's regretted all his life, that he shouldn't have told him what Ford wanted. Then again it's just a trophy, everyone knows who won that race and McLaren must have felt pretty bad winning when you know the other driver was much faster.
Agree with you: better to be a magnificent loser than a discount winner.
I guess everyone knows the story now after the watching the movie...
He could've won, but maybe it wasn't about that.
@@Speedytrip The McLaren/Amon car started on Firestone tires. That were a disaster. They lost a lot of laps early on until McLaren convinced them to change brands. They then ran down the Miles car. They were faster. McLaren and Amon had no reason to feel bad. Without the political interference they might have won anyway.
We all know good and well Ken Miles won that race
@@ivanjulian2532 fuuuuck you, Ken Miles helped build that car, so he damn well desrved to do what he wanted with that car
@Crow yessir he help develop it too and saying he didn’t is honestly idiotic
Ivan Julian I’m gonna pretend I didn’t hear that
@@ivanjulian2532 you make a valid point, but you have to consider the fact that Ken broke the lap record 3 times, really he should've won in the end but Ford prevented him
Ivan Julian are you mad course he should have won that
Ken Miles is a bigger gentleman than any race I have been in or seen and Ford owes a great deal of gratitude to him and his surviving family who lost a father and a husband while Ken gave his all and left it all on the track for Fords benefit not just his own. God Speed Miles and Shelby
I bet you believe there was Conflict between Ford and Miles, even though it was something English people made up. There was no conflict and the Shelby Team all helped improve the GT40, not just Miles

Gt40 is a dream car
The functionality of the GT40 with the beauty of the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale would be quite something.
But if you really want a GT40, Superformance can make you a 'continuation' car for the price you might pay for a house....
@@paulstandeven8572 still a shit tone cheaper and safer than the real one
not in gt2
@@LDNT14 The real ones were built very strongly for crash protection - unusual in a race car of the era. They were heavier than many comparable race cars for that reason.
The Superformance cars are a close copy of the original, so are unlikely to be a huge amount safer in a crash. But detail improvements can make a huge difference.
@@paulstandeven8572 mate the original ones were wild dogs. This is a 50 year old younger GT40. I'm 1000% sure it's safer

Ken Miles has been someone I’ve idealized since I was a kid and to watch this along with the new movie is just awesome. What a guy and to do it at his age! Those GT40’s flat out on the Mulsanne, holy shit!
Ken Miles was a genius for engineering and driving. There has never been anyone like him since. He won this race, completely robbed of it and passed away before he could win the next 2. The car he helped design was the ONLY American car to ever win Le Mans to this day... 3 years in a row. R.I.P Ken Miles.
Roy Lunn of Kar Kraft designed and built the GT40 MK11, this was shown in the film but the guy was not identified. His name was Roy Lunn . There was a committee headed by a guy called. John Cowley was the head of this group not Leo Bebe ( Bebe was responsible for Marketing) . Shelby & the other 2 team owners were also on that group . Ken Miles was very involved in testing & development, but he didn’t design or build the car from scratch.
Finally Shelby ran 3 cars in that race the Number 1, 2 & 3 cars,
As for him being a genius maybe but from 1967 through 1970 McLaren built the utterly dominant Can Am cars which dominated that series for years.
Bruce McLaren built his own cars which dominated Can Am,built his own F1 cars. Miles didn't build the GT40 from scratch. McLaren,Foyt,Gurney were all involved in testing as much as him. Also,McLaren won fair and square. The movie made Leo Beebe a villain. His family even considered suing the movie maker. He had no involment with the finish. Also,Enzo Ferrari wasn't even at the race.
@@beagle7622 Finally somebody that knows some History and didn't just watch the Movie. There also was no Rift between Miles and Ford
@@kadasrichard Thank you, That Movie was a Joke and completely smeared Ford and all who helped build the GT40

No such movie. Maybe you mean "Le Mans 66"
0:40 When you look at the caliber of cars taking that corner, you realize every vehicle is probably worth 10 mil or more nowadays. Madness. Great footage.
The complete lack of safety measures is hilarious. These racers truly had no fear!
Ken Miles alive getting out of that car in the pit lane gave me goose bumps
RIP Ken Miles you were amazing, here after finishing Ford v Ferrari DAMN It was amazing
I was there for that race. My father was stationed in Germany and took me to it. I was six years old at the time. It was one of the best times of my life.
Imagine racing the same 3 minute road course for 8 hours long..... Forget the engine holding up, can you?
I thought they did 4 hour stints. I'm no expert. Weren't there 4 drivers. How did that work over 24 hours, with I assume, nighttime being the most exertive.
they were exchanging drivers, so for example, if ken miles is tired, then the other one will replaced him
Donald Duck ok 4 hours racing the same 3 minutes over and over
@@donaldduck1828 Nope, in 1966 there were 2 drivers per car so basically 12 hours each but that wasn’t mostly the case, today we have 3 drivers and 1 driver can drive a maximum of 12 hours and a minimum of 6 hours, the record for a driver was in 1950 where Louis Rosier drove for 23 hours and 50 minutes while his son drove only 2 full laps and they won
Passion
McLaren had no real honour to get up onto that first place podium. I may be speaking on bias because I just saw the movie, but in looking up more about this real event. From what I can see, the movie gets it right in that basically, McLaren did not really have the lead, Miles did. And any real person with a sense of achievement in his or her blood would not hold up that number 1 trophy based on a technicality. Especially one as controversial as this one. Only a loser would think they were the real winner at this point.
I don’t think we’ll ever know really but McLaren is not to blame.
And for all he knew he might have been the winner. Miles who suffered at least 3 laps lost due to brake issues might have been down a lap or penalized or something for all he knew. McLaren raced as he was told to. And it’s not like at the end of a race your told you are the winner but then have a chance to personally decide someone else should get it.
Problem was Ford trying to do that stupid 360 lap tie. And who knows who decided on it. In some interviews Shelby says he came up with the idea and regretted it. In others he has said it came down from above him. Miles had to lose about 4 laps, 3 which were lost in the pits. Then he had drive super slow. Both him and McLaren said they didn’t want to be second.
I’m also not sure where the actual finish line was then, and it may not have been (and likely wasn’t) at the actual checkered flag. The race technically finishes at 24 hours, and distance traveled determines the winner. They weren’t the first to be screwed, not even in that race. (The Alpine 11th/12th place cars had similar issues.) And they weren’t the last....cough cough Toyota.
@gutz1981 - I agree with everything you said. Unfortunately, they were all doing what they were told to do. McLaren probably didn’t want to win that way, Miles certainly didn’t want to lose at all... But Ford needed their photographed “F-you” to Enzo Ferrari. It’s a shame.
McLaren had no honour? A loser? Seriously? You know what that guy did in motorsport?
@@pistolfish8688 All I know is that if you are a man of fair play and deep down you know that your victory came at some kind of expense of someone else, then you do all you can to make sure the person who LET YOU WIN is recognised or you step down all together. I have met a lot of people who have no problem taking credit or not even acknowledging that someone else gave them what they got. And those people live their lives in a state of delusion where they eventually make an excuse for anything.
@Ziarab Hussain My apologies. McLaren was a loser, he was a despicable person for taking this win. They should remove his name from the records. Give it to Miles because he really came first. What a gutless prick McLaren was. Complete Douche. He was fine later on but here he was a disgrace.
Anybody who gave this thumbs down is not a race fan. Any time I can see race footage I am in! Seeing those classic race cars or even going to the classic events and actually talking to these guys in the paddock is a fantastic experience.
The smell of the cars, brakes and rubber, even the turbulence created by the speed as they cut through the air never gets old for me. Nothing like a “ sport car” race!

Ken Miles is my 2nd favourite driver of all time, 1st is Jim Clark for Lotus and Ayrton Senna 3rd
Enormous respect I have for these 3 drivers with unbelievable talent
All were excellent. Jim Cark was my favorite because I was too young for Stirlng Moss.
ford marketing robbed Ken Miles of the triple crown just for a photo op... shame on them.
Dude the movie was so so amazing the ending was sad though.
t'was good for the cantankerous ken.

but when you have Ken Miles on your team, it is like having Jim Brown at RB, Gordie Howe at RW, Niklas Lidström and Bill Russel on D, Lionel Messi at Striker, Nikola Tesla, Louis Pasteur, Archimedes, argh!
I digress.
Saddest thing, about Ken Miles untimely death, is the impact to his family(spouse and offspring), the impact to his family(friends, foes, teammates), the impact to the development of automobiles and technology.

ken miles won on that racetrack multiple times that day. you don't need a trophy or podium appearance to indicate to oneself that one has 'won'.
you do need a job, supporting your livelihood...
Everybody already knows that most 'professional racing governing bodies' are corrupt and utterly non-chivalric.
look what happened to Ayrton Senna...
From what I know he was told to slow down because of something dangerous on the track, so they could get the photo
Miles did win, the officials or whatever cooked up a rule that was never in the rule book to stop Miles from winning.

I was 10 years old when this race took place and at that time a popular hobby was slot car racing. There was a large track at a concession store just a few houses from where I lived, it took up the whole basement and was in a figure 8 configuration and had 4 slots. My parents had bought (I believe a year earlier) slot car racing set with a 2 slot track and 4 cars. I believe the cars were a Ferrari, Chaperral, Porsche, and the Ford GT which was my favorite.
2 years ago I commented...here I am again....Still transfixed!

Furthermore he was No Dan Gurney and he sure as hell was no Jim Clark. Not to mention Phil Hill, Oliver Gendebien, Jacky Ickx, Joseph Siffert, Hans Stuck, Jochen Mass, Stefan Bellof, Derek Bell and so on.
Including the fact that yes - _"gasp!"_ dare I say - he was no Chris Amon or Bruce McLaren.

As it's apparent that I have followed this sport long before you ever did, by getting subjected by an inaccurate movie tale....
Starting with the nonsense that Ken Miles beat Dan Gurney at Willow Springs - utter nonsense that there ever was - since Gurney wasn't even at that event.
If this movie got you all "Geared Up? " because of some simplified movie.... Made by bad directors and production workers.... Then you Need to Learn Your Motorsports History friend.
Otherwise your word is no good. Whether you like it or not.

@@maxmulsanne7054first off there's only 1 director, secondly why are you so wound up over this. I am into lots of sports, and sometimes movies are made about said sports that contain inaccuracies. This is the case for every historical film ever made. In this case I believe the film to be masterfully crafted from a directorial standpoint. Not only is it shot beautifully (which can be a major problem with car films as they are usually shaky-cam infested tripe) but it actually has heart. I'm not sure if Ken Miles cut you off in traffic some time in the mid 60's, in which case your weird anger and know it all attitude maybe could be excused, but he WAS an excellent racer who participated in an event most consider interesting. The events that surround Le Mans in 66 are fascinating and turning them into a film and embellishing slightly in places is hardly the end of the world. There are far worse offenders in this category. It's an interesting story, well acted and very well executed from both a narrative and visual perspective. If you don't agree with that, even with your obvious extensive knowledge of racing history, then you're in the vast minority

Never fails to amaze me how futuristic and sexy many sportscars looked in the ‘60s. The Ferrari P3/4 was the most beautiful sports car ever created IMO. The pinnacle was reached with the McLaren F1 in the ‘90s. Today what do we have? Bugatti Veyron, the sawn-off fuselage of a Hercules transporter with the face of a bloodhound 🤮

styleemusic yes!! u can find small things where ferrari and ford definitely had bitterness against the other. this is where racing became not just sport or game but “who’s the best of the best” remember this is 1966!! ferrari was arrogant and could not stand being beat by a “dirty american” it was definitely rivalry and shelby went hard in this very proud for USA. Enzo did the same to ferruccio who later invented lamborghini after being confronted as a farm boy not able to buy expensive car from ferrari! To all of you who bought into “Ford vs Ferrari”….it managed to make it appear that Ken Miles drove the 24 Le Mans solo! He happened to have had a superb co-driver, Denny Hulme. THEY could be said to have won. This takes nothing away from KM’s role or driving, and watching him here on the West Coast in his MG Specials, RSK’s, etc. in the 50’s was sheer joy.

How could McLaren accept the victory after being demolished by Ken Miles`s performance... and go on to celebrate like he actually won on track. This I don`t get..
That's nothing. Mike Hawthorn nd Jaguar declined to retire from the race after his mistake caused 84 deaths in 1955 le mans. Merc was leading nd decided to retire, they asked Jaguar to do the same, but victory is victory to some. The way they achieve that victory is of no consequence to them.

Wow so surprisingly Ken Miles let Car number 2 to pass the finish line first !, It was his choice, respect :)
He didn't, they crossed side by side, there was no photo finish at the time, or accurate measurement devices, they decided who was the winner on who traveled the furthest. Since Bruce McLaren started further back in the grid, they gave him the win. And it wasn't Ken Miles' choice, he was told to slow down when he was a lap ahead, so the 3 Fords would come together as a PR stunt.

@@skynet3d maybe your blind, in real life and you can see it in video the number 2 car crossed the line more than a car length ahead, there is a finishing line and flag man. The rule about where you started ie the staggered start at Lemans ONLY applies if there is a dead heat. In this case this never happened it was just a formation finish, the third ford as example was four laps down but they had slowed so he could cross the line with the other two fords.
Yes indeed. He knew he was a lap ahead so was content to allow BMW to unlap himself over the finish line. That fact was brushed under the carpet by Ford and the French authority to satisfy Ford's marketing needs. KM gave his all to that team effort and they did that to a dedicated true racer.

You would have known about this if you had possessed a book or a _Road & Track_ (1967, July or August) issue on the development of the GT40.
In those resources you would have discovered that Ken Miles was not the only R&D driver; Phil Hill, Ritchie Ginther and Bruce McLaren were just as heavily involved in the project as Miles was, when their other racing commitments allowed them to participate.
Also, Miles was not that "Great" of a driver. His talent in F1 was minimal at best. Whereas the aforementioned above were in F1 for years. Every one of them being good enough to win at least one race.

Julian V. ‘65 would have been Ford’s too, but Ferrari held sway and made it an all-Italian event.
!967 & 1968 was won by the same car. :)
this is what happens when ur rich and cant put in work. Enzo did same to ferruccio lamborghini who was also rich and italian, wanted to purchase a ferrari. Enzo said “no!! farm boys dont drive my cars.” This is where lamborghini blended into the supercar industry after manufacturing TRACTORS!! enzo was all talk no walk. Very proud for UK and USA to team up and show him real work on HIS OWN TRACK!! very embarrassing
FortMetallica that's not what happened. Lamborghini had bought a Ferrari, and found it to have a lot of issues, when he had the chance, he let Enzo know it and Enzo told him he knew nothing about cars, that he was just a farmer. That made him so angry that he built a car company just to show Ferrari he could do it better.
Without Shelby and Miles Ford would be a big nothing.
